John Murphy to release new book, final 2 chapters are about his stroke

Murph is uncertain if he will return to the broadcast booth, or say his dream phrase, "The Buffalo Bills are Superbowl Champions", but he vows to keep trying.

He had his stroke at a family New Year's Eve party. His wife and family members urged him to go to the hospital, but he refused. The next afternoon (Sunday before the Bengals game in Cincinnati), he skipped the team charter, went in, and the attending nurses knew immediately he had a stroke. 

 

Note: He is scheduled to do a book signing on Sept 16th from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Bills Store, the day before the home opener.

One thing is sure, Murph is part of this organization and is one of us.

It's a shame he didn't go to the hospital the night of the party. They may have been able to prevent, or at least diminish the severity of the stroke effects. 

 

Hope his therapy and rehab go well.

Might be the worst decision of his life not to seek immediate care when experiencing stroke symptoms. Treatment within the “golden hour” makes such a difference.

I at first misread this, thinking "Von Miller" and Rob Johnson. I was imagining Muprh trying to defend against them, lol. He might stand a chance against Johnson.

I really hate reading that.  It's so important to get treatment quickly, but egos get in the way ("don't want to ruin the party").

 

Everyone knows I don't particularly care for Murph's broadcasting but I sure hope he has a good recovery.

He was pretty good.

 

My issue with Murph was on that 1 Bills Live show. I thought he was awful.

 

Regardless, I hope he recovers and gets to call a Bills SB win.

Plain and simple.  It's his diet and likely lack of exercise.  One of the leading causes of heart attack and stroke is a diet consisting of meat, oil, sugars. As hard as it is to hear, we don't eat enough greens, legumes (beans) and fruits and eat way too much artery clogging foods. Sad but true. Study after study shows what the Standard American Diet (SAD) does to the heart and arteries. If you want more info, look up the very respected Dr Caldwell Essylstyn from the Cleveland Clinic and Dr T. Colin Campbell, from Cornell,  lead scientist of The China Study.

I liked Murphy but IMO he is better used in highlight films now where things can be rehearsed.

Last year even before stroke he seemed to be having some issues in live broadcasts but was okay when doing other things.

There are other causes; a heart attack like a fever and a headache are symptoms which can be caused by different things.

 

There was a guy who worked with me named Harmon who despite in early 40s he looked like a body builder.  He never smoked, used no medication of any sort and was vegetarian except he ate fish (a pescatarian) for over 20 years and worked out regularly both for strength and endurance.  He had a heart attack and no cholesterol issues.  Doctors determined it was due to lack of oxygen to heart muscle.  No anemia or any other blood issue were found.  No respiratory issues either.  He was given a medication to inject if he felt same symptoms again and instructions to see a doctor immediately if he needed to.

Two main causes of  stroke. A blood clot or aa aneurysm.  Aneurysms are caused bt blood vessel in the brain  weakening  and ballooning out and bursting. Those are generally  fatal. If the clot goes to the heart,  heart attack, to the lungs, a pulmonary embolism.

A stroke can happen with no warnings, but generally there ate signs.  mine was caused by  extremely high  blood pressure., 245/75 the dy before it hit. I hd warning signs, but I was a dumb pollack. Months before my stroke, I had a TIA (transient ischemic attack). A numb region would travel around my body every few minutes. Since it moved, I said "It's not a stroke".   Closer to the stroke,  I was getting weaker, couldn't concentrate, had problems regulating my temp.

Went to a picnic and several people  asked if I was OK.  I said "I have been a little sick but I'm OK."  I find out after I left the picnic that a friend's wife was crying that 

i was sick and someone should  get me to go to the ER to get checked out.   She called a former girlfriend of mine who I hadn't seen in ~2 years and got her to call me and she spent two hours  talking me to go and get checked out.Finally the next day, I went to the ER at about 4 PM, expecting to be home in several hours. 

First thing they take my BP and tell me I am being admitted. At about  10 PM I ask  why i am stil in the ER and they say I am waiting for abed in the ICU. The next morning I am having my brain scanned and I had the stroke and threw up. I wasn't unconscious, but the next clear memory I had was two days later when I had visitors.

Because of the immediate response, the only lasting signs for me are a very, very,very slight weakness on my left side (shows up when lifting something heavy) and  balance problems if I look up in trees, but it stops soon as I look straight ahead.

I regard the time since my  stroke in 2014 as bonus time as I could g\have died then. The high BP also damaged my kidney (as I only have one since i was 4). I have been going to a nephrologist since 201 and in the last year or so, my kidney function has been going down and I am now in stage 4 CKD and will need dialysis/transplant in the future. 

Luckily I recovered my motor skills  but some people aren't as lucky.

Exactly this....My grandma had a stroke on Mother's day in 2015 or 2016, and wouldn't go to the hospital until my one uncle from Buffalo got to the house a couple hours later. My mom and the rest of her kids were trying to get her to go, but she didn't want to. She never recovered, was bedridden, and passed away about a year later. It was awful
