JGMcD2 Posted September 1, 2021 Share Posted September 1, 2021 After Mac Jones was named the starting QB for the New England Patriots yesterday, someone in the Cam Newton cut thread made a point that they were excited to see what McDermott would scheme up for the rookie Jones. After looking a little bit closer we are actually slated to face rookie QBs 5 times this season. Week 9, Trevor Lawrence Week 10, Zach Wilson Week 13, Mac Jones Week 16, Mac Jones Week 18, Zach Wilson Some comments were made suggesting that McDermott isn't actually good against rookie QBs... not that he doesn't ultimately win the game... but that he doesn't chew up and spit out rookie QBs like other defensive gurus. I wanted to take a look at this, and needed to make a comparison. The first name that came to mind was Bill Belichick. Bill has been at it a lot longer, but many consider him the best and most consistent at frustrating and confusing young QBs, especially rookies. Let's take a look... Bill Belichick Sean McDermott It's a small sample size for McDermott as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills... but he's been pretty darn good thus far. At the end of this year McDermott will have faced 11 rookie QBs to Belichick's 30 (Wilson x2 and Lawrence). Tua would be one. After all, those rookies were play against his year are all early-mid rd 1 QBs taken and all except for the rock star, Trevor Lawrence has played well in pre-seasons. I was just thinking this the other day when looking at the Bills 2021 schedule: We face a rather easy slate of QBs, led by those five contests against rookies. McDermott's Bills defenses have historically been good not only against rookie QBs, but against average QBs in general. The elite passers can sometimes (not always) give the Bills defense fits. Some of his worst losses as head coach have come against really good quarterbacks. Against the mediocre ones, though? The Bills -- more often than not -- come out on top. When looking at an upcoming slate of opponents in a given season, always look at the opposing quarterbacks. This year, there are five or so that are very good. McDermott has also faced 6 rookie QBs since he arrived here in Buffalo. Just for fun... here is how those numbers stack up... Wilson had a great Q4 versus Belichek and the announcers were incredulous. Pats were up by i think 2 TDS and Wilson stormed back with under 10 minutes to go and won with an incredibly high QB rating.
