DeSantis For President in 2024?

No.  Women are paid less, on average for the same work, worldwide.  Still greatly under represented in seats of govt power and boardrooms worldwide and in the US.  Still sold into marriage or slavery.  Still required to wear veils and covers in many parts of the world.   Still banned from the clergy and magisterium of the Catholic church.  The list is very long.  Desantis does his little part by banning black feminist literature which was in the list I posted earlier.  Misogyny is news to you?   It's an actual conspiracy.  Not QAnon bs.

This is pretty hilarious considering the 99.99% likelihood that you think any dude who puts on a dress should be allowed to ***** in the same bathrooms as five year old girls.

They are trying to naturalize LGBT in the black community, to create a wedge between black people and white conservatives, whom blacks tend to agree with on several social issues…

Yes but LGBTQ+ is a social issue they strongly oppose so trying to force it on them seems silly.

At this point it is hard to believe that are educated- your response is minimally related to the thread or what you are responding to. Your previous accusations about DeSantis were lies so you know blame him for the issues in Middle Eastern countries?

Why is this about DeSantis?

Well, it has the words "Black"  and "Cancel" in it.

So , obviously, Hawkman 'thinks' that should connect to Ron Desantis.

It is either misguided or lazy

or both.

Is Florida Really Forbidding African-American Studies?

For the last several days I’ve been seeing breathless articles describing the “racist” actions of Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida. DeSantis announced that African-American studies classes will not be taught in public schools. Of course, the left went absolutely ballistic over this announcement. But what, exactly, did DeSantis do?

Let’s look at this latest kerfuffle.

The AP exam folks (a.k.a. Educational Testing Services – ETS) announced a couple of years ago that they are going to run an experimental AP exam for African-American studies. The exam was/is piloted in sixty high schools across the country for the 2022-23 school year. That’s sixty, 6-0, high schools in the entire country. They will add a few hundred schools in the 2023-24 school year, and then, offer it to all high schools in the 2024-25 school year. Bear in mind there are almost 27,000 public and private high schools in the country. So, in 2022-23 school year, 0.2% of all high schools in the U.S. were offering the African-American AP class. This coming year, if we assume say, 500 schools (AP website says “hundreds of schools”) that will bring it up to 1.9% of schools offering this course. And I can guaran-damn-tee that those schools will be/are in suburban, upper-middle class, white neighborhoods. Because it costs a school district money to offer AP classes. Check out this to-do list for schools wanting to offer AP classes. Bear in mind, these requirements will have to be met for each subject and each teacher.

{snip}

The DeSantis administration told ETS that the course “contradicted Florida law” and “lacked educational value.” ETS has, as is its practice, revised the course based on feedback like that, and from the sixty pilot programs. The new course framework will be release February 1 (not coincidentally the first day of Black History Month), and before the test is put into nationwide use, it will likely be tweaked once again. So, essentially DeSantis has refused to have Florida high schools participate in the first pilot of the AP exam. That is not “prohibiting” the African-American studies in Florida. This is saying “show us what you propose and we’ll get back to you.”

I am a huge fan of free speech and the civil exchange of ideas… all ideas.

But I also recognize that since we have public schools funded by taxpayers, that the state government is, of necessity (it’s own created necessity, yes) involved in education. That means that a state government is going to push for subjects it wants to see taught at all levels. If you object to DeSantis’ actions here, as the actions of an overbearing state government, then you should have objected when Democratic governors and state governments mandated DEI-type courses and programs like Critical Race Theory (yes, it’s been mandated in a lot of blue states and cities, sweetheart. Go look for yourself).

You cannot advocate for state interference only on behalf of your own beliefs and against beliefs contrary to yours. That’s not how it works.

from your linked article:  Barnes’ trip to Alabama fell apart after Hoover City Schools canceled three days of visits to Bluff Park, Deer Valley and Gwin Elementary schools. Barnes’ representative Patrick Oliver told AL.com the email canceling the visit was a surprise because all of the arrangements, which began in April, had gone smoothly.

So AP classes should just be junked?  great idea.  And why not start (by necessity) with the students most likely to be thought leaders and influencers?

The linked article also explains he backed out because of this dispute over contracts...

And still trying to find out what he posted on social media. None of the sources will repeat it.  what ever it was

Just don't pretend that Desantis is trying to hide Black history, using a false narrative.

re most likely comment, look at the backgrounds o mostf C suite people at top companies.  Senators or presidents for that matter.  House is often an outlier but there are certsaily plenty of whites from affluent backgrounds there too.

the editorial you cited argues against AP courses like Desantis is attacking because they're expensive and only affluent communities can afford them.  So AP courses are ok if the same condition exists for science of math classes?

Wait. So cost are why places like NY don't even require math or science past 10th grade to get a diploma?

AP classes cost money in that you need a teacher to teach them, and separate sections of students to take them. The Federal government pays money to schools that can get kids to pass them. So if you just have a section but the kids don't pass them you lose money, but if kids are successful you get money and kids get college credits.

hmmm, are you an educator in Fla?  I took for granted (stupidly) that B words cited author knew his stuff.  A few minutes researching the issue reveals it to be very complex and determined on a state level. One of the best summaries about the Fla program I found was written by students in Ponte Verde.  It doesn't really jibe with you explanation :  https://pvhstiburon.com/index.php/2022/11/16/ap-exams-financial-toll-on-pvhs-and-low-income-students/

It's not a subject I'm particularly interested in but my legs were shot by the early afternoon and the lifts are now closed.  Some lady on the lift told me about some pills that reduce lactic acid in overused muscles which makes no immediate sense but time would be better spent checking that out.

"Dr. Fredrik Oberkehr, the principal of PVHS, stated that PVHS receives an “AP allocation” from the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) via the Florida Department of Education’s (FLDOE) Education Finance Program, mentioned above, each year to cover AP related costs. Dr. Oberkehr estimated that this allocation totals to about one million dollars each year, with roughly a quarter of it being dedicated to paying for the exams. Dr. Oberkehr also estimated that about 100,000 dollars of the remainder of the allocation from the state is used to pay out AP teachers bonuses based on their exam pass rates. A significant portion of the rest of the fund is used to pay for some AP teacher salaries and benefits, which allows the school to have more teaching positions, allowing the school to have lower class sizes and offer more classes. Some of the money is also used on items such as AP textbooks (which, unlike standard and honors classes, are not covered by SJCSD), with the rest of the money in reserve with the explicit purpose of supporting AP courses and classes that “lead to an AP course,” says Dr. Oberkehr."

Not permitting liberal activists to continue to "charge" towards their own indoctrination is what every leader in America needs to be doing.

I am a teacher and deal often with AP teachers. The funding does go through the county, which gets it from the states, which gets a few billion a year from the feds, so nothing is directly from the Fed. The funding prior to the pandemic was related at least somewhat to AP scores but I will admit that might have been from Race To The Top but it was a big deal for Federal funds less than 10 years ago.

The athletic association had been considering the idea of adopting a national form on the issue, which made previously optional questions about menstruation mandatory for female students to answer. Those forms would have been kept at school. That form “has created concerns and questions from parents, school district administrators, school board members, and coaches regarding the health privacy of student-athletes,” the agenda item said.
