Leatherwood from Notre Dame is also an intriguing option to consider if there.  Can take time to develop him.

Already taken at pick 25.

Alex Leatherwood played for Alabama. You may be confusing him with Liam Eichenberg who played for Notre Dame.

With the 38th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft... The Cincinnati Bengals select... Liam Eichenberg... Offensive Tackle... Notre Dame.

Eichenberg is one of the most slept on OT's in this class. He started 38 games at LT during his Notre Dame career and hasn't given up a sack since September 29, 2018. That's 33 games in a row without giving up a sack. In that time he's had Brian Burns, Clellin Farrell with multiple other 5 star Clemson recruits, Josh Uche, Kwity Paye, Patrick Jones II, Rahsad Weaver, Janarius Robinson, Joshua Kaindoh, Victor Dimukeje, Chris Rumph, and many others line up across from him. No one got his QB to the ground by beating him in almost 3 full seasons. He's only allowed 4 QB hits in that time as well. Also, if you look at the Notre Dame rushing number this year, the left side of the OL (led by Eichenberg and Tremble) was always where Kyren Williams got loose. Burrow needs to be protected, Mixon needs lanes opened, and Eichenberg is just the man to do it. He will be one of the bookends on this OL for years to come. Jonah Williams, drafted in 2019, will be the other.

The Carolina Panthers and @MAJBobby are on the clock.

This is an excellent selection as you had the Bengals go WR is round one. I’d be interesting you went with Penei Sewell in round 1 do you come back and get Eichenberg in round 2 and push Jonah Williams to Guard. Could solidify the line in two rounds. Big commitment but protects Burrow and help the ground game (which protects Burrow).

Mock drafts are fun for “would you rather”

would you rather:

Jamar Chase and Liam Eichenburg

Or

Penei Sewell and say Rondale Moore or Amon Ra St Brown?

I actually think it turned out okay for him.

or Sewell AND Eichenberg.

My mistake.  I meant Leatherwood from Bama.  I hate both schools equally.

Sewell is going to be very very good. Probably be an elite LT in the NFL.. I don’t think Eichenburg will be good. Give me Sam Cosmi instead.

Eichenburg is solid as a rock. I agree he isn't potentially elite like Sewell but his technique is as advanced as any lineman in this draft. Lower ceiling than the top guys, but a high floor.

You hit the nail on the head in regards to my post and you brought up a great point regarding versatility, they do love players who can play in multiple positions. What I do think factors in, how much during a game and how many games throughout the season would you prefer to be in big nickel vs normal. That usage has to be factored in.

I know they feel the expect a good level of contribution in year 1 from the player in Rd1. Ford was chosen at 38 and given every opportunity to start and play and be on the field as much as possible. Whereas Epenesa was taken at 54 and allowed to be brought on slowly.

My comment has nothing to do with the player in particular btw. It is simply will he be on the field enough consistently as our RD1 pick to justify that positional pick in this round?

All I would add to this conundrum is it was pretty widely reported and I believe our old friend @Kirby Jackson confirmed it that the Bills wanted to pick Kyle Dugger last year in round 2 and is probably more of a big nickel only compared to JOK. But I agree they have to be content that if they were taking JOK in round 1 then in the majority of nickel scenarios they are not taking him (or one of their other two) linebackers off the field to bring in Taron. If they believe in a whole slew of packages Taron is still necessary then the positional value of that pick even right at the end of round 1 does become an issue.

What’s the biggest reach so far?

They do. They signed Riley Reiff as a FA too. But Penei Sewell is potentially different level to all of them so pick him and work out where everyone else plays after that. The Bungles should take Sewell.

Coulda said that about Cody Ford v DK Metcalf a couple years ago. WR is still somehow underrated around here despite Diggs’ influence.

Cody Ford isn't close to Penei Sewell. That is the point. The Bengals are so much weaker at Oline than at WR and the best player on the board for them at #5 is one of the best oline prospects in years. Take the guy, don't overthink it. I am not underrating WR but Penei Sewell makes more difference to that team in 2021 than Chase and he likely makes more difference over the long term too.

EDIT: And I have Chazz Surratt as the biggest reach.

Who would've thought the Bengals would be the talk of the Mock draft.  Seriously though, I feel Ja'Marr Chase is the best WR in this draft. He averaged an insane 21.2 yds per reception in 2019. He's got good size at 6'1" 208lbs, runs solid routes, and has that long speed to be a game breaker. He had more yards and TD's than Justin Jefferson who just broke the rookie record for receiving yards in a single season. The fact that he has chemistry with Burrow already, and the two do not have to learn each other, is a dynamic you can't underestimate as well. Chase will step on the field and be the immediate #1 in this offense.

The OL has been addressed with Reiff in FA and Eichenberg in the 2nd Round. But if this draft were to continue, you would see the Bengals are not done setting up Burrow and Mixon for success. I really do feel that Eichenberg is slept on. How many OT's can say they haven't given up a sack in 33 straight games, even at the collegiate level? How many OT's can say their QB has only been hit 4 times due to their fault in almost 3 full seasons? Eichenberg also comes from an OL tree that has produced numerous All-Pro's over the last few years. He may not be seen in the same tier as Sewell, nor are the rest of the OT's, but there isn't a drop off between Eichenberg and the rest of the guys selected before him in this draft outside of Sewell. Jonah Williams played solid at LT last year in the 10 starts he made. This draft pick gives us options though. Williams @ LT, Eichenberg @ RT, and Reiff @ LG. You can flip Eichenberg and Williams. You can have Jonah slide to LG and move Reiff to RT. Any way you look at it, the Bengals OL is much better off at this point than it was at any other last season. Throw in Chase on top of that and we're suddenly an offense that's going to be a problem for teams to match up with.

  • Virgil changed the title to TSW Mock Draft 1.0 - The Giants (Draconator) are on the clock

With the 42nd pick in the NFL Draft, The New York Football Giants select

Travis Etienne - Running Back - Clemson.

The 49ers and @Nester are on the clock.

There are other, greater needs for the Giants, but a player of Etienne's caliber is too good to pass up. Etienne will either be the featured back if Barkely goes down with injury, can spell Barkely during a game giving the Giants an amazing 1-2 punch, or have Barkely and Etienne in the backfield at the same time. Anyway he is used, it takes that much more pressure off of Daniel Jones, allowing him to flourish.

See I still think the difference between Jonah Williams and Penei Sewell is bigger than the difference between Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins (who had over 900 yards and 6 touchdowns as a rookie and in his games with Joe Burrow was on pace for 1,200 yards). The weakness of their team is the offensive line, the best player on the board is an offensive lineman, and the biggest upgrade on their existing starter is at offensive line. To me if Sewell is there and the Bengals pass then any other pick is the wrong pick. Now if Sewell is gone (let's say Atlanta take him at #4 or someone trades up into that spot to take him) then I would take Chase (or Kyle Pitts) rather than Rashawn Slater and wait for a tackle until round 2 - and it likely would be Eichenburg, who I do like more than the consensus and have as my OT5.

I still don't think the Lions have picked.... unless @Virgil has ruled on that?
