Which retread NFL Head Coach would you hire?

Josh McDaniels / Jack Del Rio.

I think Josh McDaniels is going to be great next time he becomes a head coach.

Jack Del Rio and Reggie McKenzie had something good going on in Oakland before the love of Gruden came back. (I understand he went 6-10 his last year there were a lot of injuries but the year prior he was 12-4). From 03-07, Del Rio took a prettty bad Jags team to being respectable. If THOSE are my options on think Del Rio is one of the better choices there.

I know he was, but Everyone on that list was a head coach that didn’t work out haha which is why they all got fired.

Not Harbaugh. Harbaugh took his team to the Superbowl and never had a losing season with the 49ers.

Jim Harbaugh had an NI in kindergarten in playing well with others.  He was an excellent coach in SF that turned the team around, but how would he deal with Beane or anyone else unless they reported to him.  The rest, no thanks.

We have our GM, HC tandem we should and believe sill keep for another decade.  As of now, they sunder contract for 8-9 years.  They will easily get another 5 year extension at that time, and the days of another staffing change every 2-3 years is over.  These guys are young enough that we could be on the Steelers leadership plan.  The Pegulas as one of the richest  owners in the NFL can easily afford them, and my guess all parties realize they are best with letting the football team do their job, and they manage the business end.

Guys, we’ve never had this before.  Even during the Polian/Levy era, or even the L. Saban era, there was always issues with Ralph and those individuals.  Ralph picked Littman over Polian (monster mistake).  The $ guy screwed up the team.

Did he not get fired?

I stand corrected if that’s not the case. I can’t remember if he left SF to coach Michigan, or if he got fired.

Harbaugh is number 1 on my list to your point though, mcdaniels is 2nd.

They had a "mutual agreement" to part ways, or at least that was what was reported. But I think Harbaugh disputed that later on.

Regardless, he had a fantastic run there and the 49ers were dumb to let him go.

I've always wondered what happened to Lovie Smith he had a decent record while with the Bears and seemed to be a football guy i thought a good HC that would have gotten another job at least a yr removed to re energize a bit but nothin in the NFL ----- Right 🤔 ???

He went to Tampa and last two years. He was my guy when we hired Marrone.

He was fired because almost everyone in the building hated him. Jim is a short term turnaround specialist. He is not a long term programme builder and he is not a Championship winning coach. I think you hire him if you are a mess and in 4 years you will be a competitive playoff level team. But then fire him and bring someone else in.

I agree for sure.

Once again, harbaugh was number one on my list so we are definitely in agreement there.

I guess we just more have a different opinion on Mcdaniels.

In order:

1) Jim Caldwell-look at Detroit with him & then after he left

2) Jack Del Rio-Got a raw deal in Oakland when Mark Davis convinced Gruden to come back

3) Raheem Morris -showed promise in his 2nd season in Tampa Bay & then got fired after going from 10 wins to 4.  Took over an 0-5 Atlanta team this year & has them 4-5 since.

4) Jim Harbaugh-Good record in SF, but he's not a long term answer.  His act wears very thin with anyone in the organization above him after a few seasons.  May work if he's in complete control with no GM.  If you want a quick fix that won't last long, he's your guy, very similar to when Billy Martin was a MLB manager.

5) Jason Garrett-Anyone who can last as long as he did in Dallas deserves some consideration.

I just don't see evidence of McDaniels being a good coach. I'm always skeptical of the coordinators who have a hall of fame QB to carry them. And I am doubly skeptical of NE coaches who leave the nest. They don't seem to find success when they try to recreate the Patriot way elsewhere. I guess Daboll may fall into that category, but he had coaching experience before NE and after, and he certainly does not seem to instill the same kind of culture as Belichick. He works closely with the players and has a very friendly relationship with them (more in line with McDemott's philosophy of brotherly love).

Fair enough.

I always just loved his approach to games myself.

If they need to throw it 50 Times to win, his offence will. If they need to run it 50 times, they will. Even with a hall of fame QB.

This year is a different story of course. I think it’s fair to say he gets a free pass when your QB is Newton, and your number 1 receiver is jacobi Meyers.

He also did some very nice things with Jimmy G without Tom Brady in those suspended games.

Jets fired DC. Do you think they are not planning on firing the coach? 🙀🤣

If you think firing the DC after an inexplicable move when he already didn't get along with the HC in a winless season is the same as firing a college DC after the season is done.. then ok. We're done here.

You’re the GM of an NFL franchise and about to hire a new coach.  But your owner insists on hiring a HC with previous NFLhead coaching experience.

Who do you hire and why?  Below are a few candidates:

Leslie Frazier, Bills DC

Josh McDaniels, Patriots HC

Jason Garrett, Giants OC

Todd Bowles, Bucs DC

Dennis Allen, Saints DC

Raheem Morris, Falcons DC/HC

Romeo Crennel, Texans DC/HC

Chan Gailey, Miami OC (just for fun!)

Dan Quinn, out of NFL

Matt Patricia, out of NFL

Marvin Lewis, out of NFL

Bill O’Brien, out of NFL

Jim Caldwell, out of NFL

Jim Harbaugh, out of NFL

IMO I would go with Frazier or Bowles.  I think both are good leaders that would be a solid defense.  Offense is the big question mark with them.

Marvin Lewis.  Good coach and he comes with a free 3rd round pick.

The two 3rd round comp picks over the next 2 drafts goes to the organization that develops a minority candidate, not the team he's hired by.  Additionally, since he's out of football, I don't think anyone gets the draft picks for Marvin Lewis.

Chan Gailey as HC and Wade Phillips as DC.

A win, win combination

Which is what makes a good GM and ownership so important...

I might switch that to Wade Phillips as HC, Gailey as OC (with Fitzy starting his coaching career working with the QB's )

As an owner a scenario something like this would intrique me...
