Wegmans not interested in stadium naming rights

I love Wegmans, but there's a lot of competition out there. Central Market caters a bit more towards the high end market, but it's definitely a better store and I think Publix is really good too.

Wegmans and Publix are really only separated by the prepared foods, in that Wegmans has many more at a high quality. Publix though has a very different business model in that I have  4 literally within a 3 miles circle of my house.

do they have sauerkraut?  I cant find good sauerkraut down here.

I remember Stop & Shop from Groton days.

Good question, Joe. Not sure. I used to be able to get Polish sausage at my Wegman's but hadn't seen it in a while so I asked the manager of their meat department and he said they weren't carrying it anymore. I was very disappointed.

I used to work at the now defunct Bradlee's Department Store back in college. They were owned by the Stop & Shop companies.

Theres a new pizza chain in NoVA called "Badd Pizza" that advertises "Buffalo style" pizza with sweeter sauce and "cup and char" pepperoni.  Pretty good and wings are good.  Theres a a big "716" above the counter.  No Bills games though, I asked.  Not yet.

Yea, Publix is over 10x the size of Wegmans when it comes to store count and it's tough to do the things that smaller stores do at that kind of scale. Whole Foods fell off a cliff when they started expanding.

When i was in college we were always at the Publix deli. They did a great job. I used to travel a lot for work and would go there a lot when i was in Atlanta.

Duffs is OK, but it doesn't live up to the hype.

Yea, I don't really dig super saucy wings, so I never felt the pull.

sorry but there is no comparison between Wegman's & Publix - the regional/ethnic/prepared foods at Weg's are way more plentiful despite similar value-added services to Publix. Wegman's is real.....Publix is real sterile.

I havent been to a Wegmans since I moved to Texas around 6 years ago, but I remember their prepared foods being a little overhyped. They were good but I would never go there instead of a dedicated restaurant. That said, I care much more about specialty -  deli, meat & seafood, wine, bakery, cheese than I do about prepared foods, and I've found Publix to compete with those and win by default on wine due to NY's archaic blue laws. Of course, i also haven't done a full dedicated grocery shop at a publix in around 12 years - it's just been browsing and picking up items for business travel.

We mostly went to the Black Rock and Transit locations.

The inclusion of HEB on that list is mind boggling. Texas seems to have allowed/enforced a soft monopoly in HEB's favor down here. It's the only major grocer outside of Whole Foods anywhere in Austin, and I think it's much the same in the rest of Texas. HEB has good produce, solid store brand goods, and typically good wine, but they have one of the worst bakeries I've ever been to, meat and seafood is akin to Tops,  no cheese department and very sparse availability of European cheese , a very sad bulk section, and nothing in the way of rare ingredients or spices.

So here’s another idea for a corporate giant as I looked up the others.  Target is a monster and can easily absorb $4 mil./yr.  These companies like Amazon and Target can use as advertising, and is not a big deal to them.  Smaller companies like Wegmans are not going to absorb this expenditure.

I bet they are looking at exactly that type of company or BP, Exxon, and so on.

It's a shame M&T sponsors Baltimore, because I think that could have been a company to burn money on a useless endeavor.

They will need to find a company looking to get their name out there.  If you are a newer company that is looking for exposure, having your name attached nationally to something 8 times a year could be good.

Someone like Quibi, Wish, Instacart, DoorDash, etc.

A app like espn puts the stadium name next on their game center app.  The name is announced during the telecast.  You do get a lot of exposure, but it will need to be a company that can really benefit from new customers hearing the name for the first time.

They got a lot of their customer base by being allowed to attend and advertise at the local Bills Backers bars. I doubt they want to poison that well by trying to steal their business right away. Nice fella though. I'll be trying it eventually, though they aren't super convenient for me personally.

Publix is by far my favorite large grocery chain. Wegmans is self-serve take out joint with a few aisles of self-branded grocery items.

I'll gladly refuse Wegmans and their naming rights, in order to keep them in position as the best grocery store in the USA. And I don't live in WNY. Wish the aisles were wider but they are the best in terms of about everything. Flame me, don't care.

@Augie

Ohh, NOW you’ve done it!

Yes, Publix is a good experience.....unless you care about what you pay for your food. I’ve shopped at Publix almost daily since 1993. Only recently did I come to realize how expensive they are. I heard a guy on the radio years ago saying a gallon of milk in NYC is cheaper than buying at Publix. I thought it was hyperbole.

We eat a lot of fish. Publix will sell small portions tuna, swordfish, etc for like $8.99 each. They do the math right on the card for you....it comes to like $35/lb and looks like it’s been there a while because.....who wants to pay $35/lb for fish? A better looking piece of the same type fish can be had at Kroger for $9.99/lb. Tilapia can be 30-40% more at Publix. Milk can be double the price. Heck, I bought today’s salmon at Whole Foods figuring I probably saved over Publix. Publix is reliable like a Hampton Inn, but they charge like a Ritz Carlton.

I’m not a price shopper, but when I realized how HUGE the difference was, it ticked me off! The gas station closest to the house routinely sells gas for .50-60 cents more per gallon than the surrounding stations. It’s a good corner, but a dumpy station. Regardless, people buy gas there all day long. I don’t mind paying a little more, but past a certain point, you’re just calling me stupid for shopping with you.

I admit the Publix experience is usually a good one. The stories are reliable and clean, where some Krogers are very nice while others are quite dumpy. In most markets Publix serves, they try to own the market eliminating competition. In Sarasota, FL there is a Publix every two miles in any direction. I still shop mostly at Publix for convenience and a good experience, but I’ve been kinda ticked off since I started noticing the prices.

I went into a Wegman’s on my last trip to WNY. I didn’t need anything, I just wanted to see a Wegman’s.  It was very nice, and I would shop there if it were a daily option for me and they have fair pricing. If I were to go more upscale, I think I prefer Fresh Market to Whole Foods and their off brands, but that’s another story.

Wegman’s > Publix.

Same here, three within 2 -3 miles of me. Several more within 5 miles.
