716 is a terrible restaurant. Just throwing my $0.02 in.

It would be a cool novelty if the Sabres ever made the playoffs and brought back a buzz to the downtown area when everybody is looking to go out somewhere to watch the games but sadly that hasn't come to fruition.  But as a stand alone restaurant agreed and I think most people feel the same.

His tiff with EJ was so overblown.

Skurski brought up drafting another QB. EJ, rather than saying, “the organization invested in me and it’s up to me to prove I’m the QB of this team and that’s what I’m going to do” he ASKS Tim Graham if he thinks they should draft a QB.

maybe maybe not- but a journalist isn’t supposed to inject themselves into the story line. He did. I don’t really care either way. Tim’s whining and thin skin was all over this boards archives.

I’m glad he stop posting, and his lame arguing with other posters with his “how dare you question me” schtick. Guessing he now likely just spectates for content ideas or masquerades as the one or two posters that defend him.

He was only injected by TBD. It was a standard interview, and the interviewee asked the interviewer a direct question. The headline was hardly “Tim Graham’s thoughts on drafting a QB as heard by EJ Manuel.”

Yeah for sure, on the novelty side.

But man, EVERYWHERE is(was!) better in Buffalo/WNY when the Sabres make a run. Was very fortunate to live right off of Elmwood during those Briere & Drury runs, what a scene after a W out on the street.

Yeah I remember when 716 first opened my two immediate thoughts were:

1) Man this would've been cool to have during the 05-07 Sabres runs

2) This will be great when the Sabres become a legitimate contender again(at that time I was still optimistic that Pegula was gonna bring us back to glory).  That was really the only level of excitement I had for the place

And yes all of WNY was electric during those years!  I have been trying to catch some of the Sabres Classics airing on MSG right now showing all those playoff games and it was making me think about how fun it was to live in WNY during those years and what an unbelievable atmosphere it was.  Buffalo in the Spring when the Sabres are a legit playoff team is one of the most fun places to be!

The Sabres were the first sports team the Pegula’s bought, so they were brand new to owning and operating a sports franchise and it showed. The LaFontaine hire backfired in many ways, between LaFontaine quitting abruptly and Pat’s choice of GM [Tim Murray]. Murray gave away all the assets the Sabres were stockpiling during “the tank” as he tried to accelerate the Sabres rebuild, which left the Sabres void of talent and depth. The players that Murray overpaid for were traded away by the new Sabres GM [Botterill], so in actuality, all those years of tanking only got the Sabres three good players: Eichel, Reinhart and Dahlin. So after being at the bottom of the league for so long, I’m sure it started to impact a lot of people in the organization, but I don’t think overall the Pegula’s are bad owners, just inexperienced. With the Bills, the Pegula’s have had many of talks with Bill Polian, so Bill was able to provide a lot of mentoring to Terry and Kim. With the Sabres, they’ve had to learn as they went along.

This is a weird slide and obviously never should have been included in any presentation at any level. If one of the Pegula's presented or signed off on them, shame on them. It sort of reads "Win Games---Turn the business over to my kids/Generational wealth---Don't make me sell my yacht". I am honestly not sure how else you read it. The title of the effing slide is "Pegula Family Goals (PSE)". Based on the content, it definitely does not read as "PSE is a family". This is tone deaf to say the least...

It definitely does.  Every friggin thing claims it's family now.  Every organization, school, etc.

I’ve never been when it’s not empty.

As a Bills fan living in NJ I drove up to Buffalo twice with friends who are Jets fans to see the Bills and Jets play. We went to the 716 and thought it was good. Of course we aren't locals to the area so what do we know. Also went to a place nearby called the Pearle Street Pub and they had good wings. We had to get the wings since we were in Buffalo. Also had fun at your casino. The Bills won both times we were there. We all loved Rich/Ralph/New Era Field. It reminded us of the days of Shea/Giants Stadium when real fans could still afford to go to the games. Now we are stuck with a giant grey ****hole known as MetLife. Neither the Jets or Giants have a homefield advantage anymore as many of the real fans have been priced out of going to the games.

Hey good post, thanks for coming to town.

If it makes any difference, my dad really likes 716. The handful of times I’ve ended up there were after HS games at Harbor Center. Kinda built in audience, especially in January when you don’t want to get in and out of cars/weather  to go elsewhere.

And yes, the atmosphere at The Ralph/NErF is always great. We have an awesome throwback vibe here, as you mentioned. 8 extra holidays a year!

I know the Bills eventually will need a new stadium although given the times who knows when that happens. Even though I am a Bills fan I also have Jets season tickets. Going from Giants Stadium to MetLife the cost of my season tickets went from $1700 a year to $3700 a year. This includes the PSL fee. For Bills fans enjoy New Era for as long as you can. New stadiums aren't all that great. Just like fans in Buffalo we tailgate hours before the game as well as after to let the crowd thin out. The Jets fans I have talked to don't need a bar or restaurant in the stadium as everybody prefers tailgating. I just want to tailgate and go watch the game and Giants Stadium was perfect for that. MetLife blows especially considering the cost.

The one takeaway from that entire article was from the very top. Making it a organizational objective in your staff meeting to maintain your family's lifestyle? So inappropriate. I have been in many meetings like that, hosted by many different millionaire owners and I dont know one that would discuss such a thing with any management, much less staff. No wonder the culture is so toxic. I do not have any bad will towards the Pegulas, as far as I know they are fine people. However, the poor judgement displayed in that instance sure leaves me scratching my head though...

I have a kind of funny, tone-deaf, anecdotal story along those lines. When Hurricane Gustav was approaching in 2008 there was a great deal of panic. The city was evacuated and 3 years after Katrina everyone was extra-cautious. I remember we had a full staff meeting and George Shinn (the owner) was trying to drive home to everyone to take it seriously. He wanted people to evacuate sooner rather than later. He said something to the tune of, “when Katrina was coming through Denise and I waited too long. We didn’t leave until the day before. Our plane was sitting on the runway at Lakefront airport and it took our driver almost 2 hours to travel the 3 miles to get there.” Ha ha, there were a bunch of 25 year old kids making $30k a year trying to relate.

As a side note though, George paid his entire staff, the entire time during Katrina. There were even stories of people calling him in a bind and he was just sending money to them left and right. He always had a bad reputation in public but he did A LOT for his people.

This is the argument that Graham and Vogel have made.  During a time when The Pegulas will be looking for state funding for renovations for the Blue Cross Arena (Amerks) and KeyBank Center, as well major funding for a new stadium or a huge renovation projection for New Era Stadium.

The way that they handled layoffs and downsizing for many community members who will be finding these ventures through taxes, is less than ideal from a PR standpoint.

it makes me worried of what they may have lost in fracking and the current (and previously on-going) oil/energy price drop.  If the bulk of their portfolio is now (and moving forward) the Bills and Sabres, then we are in for a world of hurt.
