Flatten this initial wave to a manageable level of new cases.  Just get enough breathing machines and masks to treat everyone that could recover if they had a functioning doctor, nurse, and a machine.

We are not there yet specifically in the pending hot spots.  Once there, we will be able to open up the stay home orders.  That may be weeks or perhaps a few months at worst.

I know one thing for certain and that is dead people will not revive the economy

One thing for certain is that the liberal mindset is always “ someone else should have known/ done differently”. Crazy, unimaginable things can happen in the world sometimes. Have to deal with it. A few months and the economy may be past the point of revival anytime soon. That’s the choice that needs to be made. It sucks, but just as in times of war, some will perish.

please define your, 'flattening of the initial wave to a manageable level'. does it include current measures known as 'stay at home' mandates? are these measures to be implemented community wide, statewide, across the nation as a whole? how do we revive the economy?

again, is your cure going to be worse than the cause? how do you know for a fact?

Get to the point where the hospitals are not overwhelmed.  Yes, stay at home.  Probably by state but dictated by the outbreaks....the numbers, the science.

Predicting the future can seldom be done perfectly.  If you are waiting for that, best of luck.  Some decisions are forced without all information.  In my opinion we are not going to be able to focus on jobs again until after we get back to a first world level of hospital care....after the initial wave passes in the hotspots.

They never do, Bob. For instance, the 2.8 million people that died in this country last year didn't contribute to the economy this year. That's generally how it works.

Also, learn who makes good decisions in our country and so who is a good leader versus who has made bad decisions and perhaps should not be a leader.

In other words, this is just another excuse for Bob to shout:

"ORANGE MAN BAD!"

TDS is more corrosive than 'Rona. Bob is walking proof that it breaks brains.

But they do somehow keep voting blue.

Waiting for that will simply take too long. This IS the first world, and the USA has the most hospital care capacity anywhere. It’s still not enough, but that perfect world you’re longing for doesn’t exist in reality. The science would probably say remain locked down for a year until there is a vaccine if the goal is to absolutely minimize the risk. Daily life went on when we didn’t have vaccines for many diseases that cut many thousands of lives short. We’ve gotten a little too comfortable, but the economy must be deferred to. Hygiene and simple precautions must become a focus; staying locked down for months isn’t an option outside of a couple more weeks. The most vulnerable will need to self isolate.

Get back to first world level hospital care?

I swear, sometimes I don't understand what keeps people like you from building a raft and making a break to the first-world shores of Venezuela. You are SO miserable in this country. Maybe a trip to a real schitthole is in order for you when this is over.

Of course that sort of thinking only applies when they find a Republican in the White House. Nobody is allowed to ask the question of Uncle Joe why after having gone through a similar breakout wasn’t the cupboard left completely stocked by his Administration. Hmmmm?  Do masks have a shelf life? Did they go bad?

The lock down will likely last at least two months. Anything less than that isn't realistic given the number of people who are projected to die in the coming weeks.

Trump was in office for 3 years prior to this pandemic.

The Trump administration shipped almost 18 TONS of PPE to China in early February.

All of these decisions will be made in real time. The answer is going to be a ‘cure’, a treatment, or other advanced science breakthrough. I’m of the opinion that all of this sheltering is only buying them time for science to do its job.

They won’t keep a lockdown for that long. Too many businesses will die.

As discussed previously in this thread, the “number of cases” metric is essentially worthless.  On a national basis, it is really nothing more than a function of how extensive testing is at any given time.  You can’t seriously contend that there is any point in time where we knew how many infections there were in the entire US, or in Italy, for that matter.

Yes, I agree, when testing is rolled out on a significant scale in any country, you don't know if the number of new cases is due to the ramping up of testing or not.  However...

The data JH uses is based on the number of days since the first 100 cases, which is a decent measure (there is no perfect measure yet) because testing started out a such a low rate in most countries, and most of those early cases are (most likely) associated with hospitalizations.  Using that assumption shows the US is 10 days behind Italy.  It is also consistent with using the number of days each country experienced their first 100 deaths (probably a better measure), which is around March 4th for Italy and around the 17th for the US.

So, yes, when widespread testing starts, it influences the number of new cases, which is why it's more accurate (not perfect) to use the "first 100 metrics."

You need to sit back and take your bias out of the equation here. You have put yourself in a position of being somewhat or fully against everything the Trump administration does. You used to be considered as a reasonable liberal. Now you are closer to Tiberius than Doc Brown.

Says the guy who hasn't criticized one trump policy in over 3 years....

At least you admitted it, so kudos there.

i can't help but notice throughout our entire exchange, you have avoided the premise of my initial response to you. so i'll ask it again and see if i can elicit a direct response. is the cure going to be worse than the cause? with regard to your response to said question, how do you know it as a fact?

What were the results of Trump's voter fraud commision?

And away we go! Get over it Gary. She just lost....that’s all that happened. And reading her most recent tweets, is it really that shocking to you why? Really?

Who lost? I'm talking about winning president Trump's own team he put together to investigate voter fraud by illegals and dead people.

Would be nice for once that people would put aside the partisanship given the current crisis.

It seems to be a cult with Trump.  When people are unable to criticize him objectively, it's a bit difficult to have any kind of debate.  I'll try to refrain though...
