One of the classiest acts as a champ in all of sports history.

 

Sorry to read he was in bad shape his last few years.

 

There was a rumour his lungs were another half larger than most people, the C's prided on the fast break and he was relentless.

 

The Braves played a few each season at Maple Leaf Gardens and I enjoyed watching the Cowens/Hondo/Silas/JoJo C's play at least once.

Loved those Braves/Celtics games.  We took ‘em to six games in the ‘74 playoffs.

 

Used to see Dave Cowens all the time at Fenway.  I had tix along the first base line in shallow right field, just behind the dugout.  Cowens must have been a few rows back - always saw him in the aisle or the beer line.  ??

 

(Very nice guy, very friendly.)

Cowens one year decided he had had enough and quit for the first few months and drove a taxi in Boston. When he told the team he was resigning it was quiet for a few seconds until ML Carr yelled out "then get the hell off our bus" to break the ice, not sure if that was the exact word in the real statement. 

 

Just read that a few years earlier Dave needed some time off, so Red said cool whatever come back when ready, and Cowens went to the family farm to sell Christmas trees.

 

 

A few years ago on a baseball road trip i ran into a Boston fan who ran a store near the Gardens during the 80s, had a few good stories, i made sure to ask if he was 100% sure that was really Bill Walton he was talking to (duhhh of course..)

Some will argue that yesterday’s Braves are indeed today’s Celtics.  And if you follow that convoluted John Y. Brown triple franchise swap between the Celtics/Braves/Clippers, that argument is valid.

 

So all you Celtics haters are rooting against the Buffalo Braves!

 

Red was nothing but magical. When Walton failed his physical, Red charged into the hospital, cigar blazing, and - to summarize - said, “He’s fine, he passes...let’s get outa here...we got a game tonite!”

 

(Walton’s spoiled punk son is in a world of doodoo.)

the NBA didn’t take off until the mid 80s

 

finals games on weeknights were tape delayed, CBS showed a rerun of Columbo and Cannon or Kolchak the Night Stalker before the NBA tape at 1:30am,  before we had any recording devices

 

The 1984 Finals was possibly the first time we got live prime time games on weeknights

When Joel Ward of the Caps scored the OT goal to win game seven vs. the favored  Bruins in 2012, chants of “N-word” rained down from the stands. Disgusting. 

 

Apologies for derailing the thread and the honoring of Hondo, but I thought it bore mentioning considering the context of your post above.

I don't remember the tape delay part, but I do remember not being able to see this game & Magic's legendary performance because it just wasn't on TV. :thumbdown:

1:30 AM after Columbo?  Come on.  This is ridiculous.  

 

From 1979–1981, CBS aired weekday NBA Finals games on tape delay if they were not played on the West Coast. Games were televised after the late local news (11:30 p.m.) in the CBS Late Movie time slot. In some cases, games were seen live in the cities whose local NBA teams were playing. In 1981 for example, WNAC-TV Boston and KHOU-TVHouston carried Games 1, 2, 5 and 6 live, although most viewers around the country had to wait until after the late local news to see them.

Braves / Celtics could have been a great rivalry.  It had a good start.  The Celtics were loaded back then.

 

I believe the only series the Braves won in their short history was against the Bullets.
