Marv's Neighbor
Having grown up in Buffalo, I was always going over/under railroad tracks. When I moved to Seattle, discovered a whole different train scene. The mountains and the rivers gave a whole different perspective. Double deck piggy back's, that would never clear the older east coast right of ways, are very normal in the west California has the California State Railroad Museum, in Sacramento that is fantastic. coloradobillsfan
the 4014 big boy locomotive restoration (to running order) is nearly complete, and UP will be announcing the schedule shortly if you are into trains, you definitely owe it to yourself to check this thing out. it's a beast

They ran the Mel Price Lock near St.Louis from Houston and Washington DC. 2003! That's 16 years ago. But they still need at least one person to run robot, oversee computer and two people crew for safety. So basically 2 boots always on ground. We've been running two person crew for decades. Bottom line... Can't go anymore "skeleton crew" than we do now. Kind of funny, I am not worried. Unlike railroads, there is still a slight human element with locks. That's already us! Same with railroads. They will have to keep one or two pair of boots on ground for safety & security. Again... We have already been there for the past 40 years with security and safety. We actually went from a one person crew to a two person crew 50 years ago. 2 hours ago, BuffaloBill said: There are mines in Australia where equipment is being remotely operated in from a command center thousands of miles away. Yep. But they always need security guards. That, security, will be last to be automated, if ever???

Never mind the whole "Why the ***** is a guy on heart or blood pressure meds driving a train in the first place" question.

If your vehicle ever stalls on tracks and a train is approaching. Get (everbody) out (duh)... Don't try and push car... Not enough time even if the engineer sees you and is stopping... Takes huge distance to stop. Even stopping vehicle may be toast. Run TOWARDS THE train & off tracks (duh). You run away (in direction of travel) from train... Place gets packed like the Pope is in town. There's a few places down the tracks where you can just park and watch him roll along without all the hustle and bustle. We did that a few years back. The Thomas window seems to be a short one with kids.
Augie
I would LOVE to take a scenic train trip. Unfortunately, my wife gets motion sickness, so it seems like a really bad idea. She has to chew gum and put the windows down with temps in the 40’s driving around windy, hilly parts of Atlanta. We have been on several large cruises (2-3k passengers?), but have a much smaller ship booked in the fall (about 300). I’m concerned already, but praying for the best.
