Patriots want Baker Mayfield

The pasties will do their usual.  They will use their first six picks to get solid players at OL, linebacker, defensive line and corner.  They will take a late 2nd round, really good QB, who got lost in the glamor show and groom him for 2 years and then flip him for a first and third round pick.  Brady will play for another 5 years and that QB will get some good showcasing, when Brady takes a few games off after the playoffs are in the bag.   Having all those six, 1,2,3 round picks will make him look like the second coming.   That is the plan.  They have been doing this sort of things for years. It works.

lot of media hyping up the qbs but if the giants skip qb and take barkley, say browns nab nelson at four i'd bet elway would love to get chubb on that d line opposite miller we could get our qb a lot cheaper. this is what the pats might be ready to do. if guys start dropping cause teams drafting for need not bpa. the pats could move up but not in front of us

They need to replace their master of holding at LT and their cheap shot artist TE has started talking retirement. Once you start talking retirement you're already mentally retired.

 

I'm sure he wants McGlinchey.  Unless he trades way up, he's not going to get him.

One of the Patriots beat reports said he feels the Pats have no interest in the top 4 QB's because they know they need to fill hole BUT still find a guy to become TB replacement.  He thought the kid from Richmond might fir the bill perfectly and likely would be on the board at #41 when NE picks.  

 

He said the team desperately needs an OL and their defensive depth is weak.  He could a LB at 23 and OT at 31, then maybe the QB in round 2. 

 

I can't NE going all in on QB after giving away Jimmy G.

If they wanted a QB for the future wouldn't they have kept Garoppolo?  Don't they have major needs at OT, LB, and CB?  This is all a smokescreen by the Pats to get a GM (preferably in their division) to panic.

Uh it was widely reported why they didn’t keep Garoppolo. They couldn’t. Not without guaranteeing him the starting job in the near future. Couldn’t do that with Brady entrenched still. Jimmy rejected their extension offer. You miss the news that week or something?

If they wanted to move on from a 41 year old Brady they would have done it with Garoppolo (by the way there were conflicting reports and a local reporter for the Globe said a contract extension offer was never made).  Regardless, the trade to the 49ers to me was a choice the Pats made that they were going to stick with Brady and put as good of team on the field as they possibly could until he retires.  Giving up Cooks and using your 1st rounder to draft a quarterback doesn't make sense in that situation.  Bolstering your offensive line and defense with five picks in the 1st three rounds (and maybe spendin one of those picks on a developmental QB) does.

I really can't see the Pats moving up for a QB. Brady just turned in an MVP season. It's not like they need to move way aup and grab a QB that will be able to start this year or next. 

 

Why would they waste all that draft capital (which Belichick LOVES) to move up for a QB like Mayfield or Rosen who will be ready to start year 1 and then just let him waste away on the bench?

 

Plus, they don't know when Brady is retiring. What if he does play for another 5 years?

Or even 3-4? Then they basically just wasted that QBs rookie contract and have to worry about re-signing him to big money before he's proven.  

And they'll be paying that rookie QB top 10 1st round pick money to sit on the bench. 

 

 

It makes WAY more sense that they grab a developmental QB with one of their multiple picks in the 2nd/3rd in a very deep QB draft. Maybe there's an outside chance they take one at 23 or 31 if they really like a guy. But they're not trading way up to the top of the draft for a QB who will sit behind Brady for years.

....first lets get past this "they could have kept Jimmy G" garbage.  No they couldn't have.  .....He was going to be a UFA this offseason if he hadn't been traded.  New England WAS NOT going to use the franchise tag on a QB who won't start.  You can't pay your backup Starter money while you are paying your starter, starter money.  The Pats did give him up cheap, but they still got more than what they would have gotten if they let him walk.  (they got a 2nd, letting him walk would have netted a compensatory pick at end of round 3.)  So, please folks, quit prefacing all your patriots takes with "they could have kept Jimmy G". they could not have.  

 

...second.  It may well be true they like Baker Mayfield...and as some others have noted....they can't get him.  If the Browns don't take him. AND, the Giants opt to trade out of 2 AND the Giants don't take a phone call from the Jets to move down ONE pick so the Jets can assure themselves their choice at two AND the Bills also somehow, if the Giants are open for business...also can't beat the pats offer..then and only then, would the Pats be able to get Mayfield.  ....the notion is ABSURD.
