Yes and no, I know what you are getting at but their top talent (Donald and Gurley) preceded Goff. It is a little “chicken and egg” and there is no right way to do it. The ideal situation is to consistently draft well. You only get so many chances to strike on a QB. Because they've gone free agency crazy and basically locked themselves into a 1-2 year window. If they don't win the Super Bowl by 2020 they're screwed. JMO but I'd rather build the team for long-term success than go all in on 2 years like they're doing. In the next couple years they'll be looking to sign Donald, Gurley, Peters, Joyner, and Goff. They will have very little of their own depth to fall back on when some of these players inevitably leave. IMO it will be a salary cap nightmare there before long and I don't think Goff has what it takes to win the Super Bowl, but we'll see. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Goff is not Wentz, most people over glorify his play this year because they didnt actually watch the games, just check stat boxes. Not taking anything away from the kid, great second season for sure, but I also didn't see a guy on the field I could sit back and say this kid is going to have a long and very good career. Wentz to me showed a lot more promise as a legit quality starting QB than Goff did last year. Plus, teams caught up to the Rams offense towards the end of the season with back to back games of 13 points, including the playoffs and against mediocre or worse defenses. McVay was hiding Goff's weaknesses most the season, and having guys like Gurley, Watkins, Woods, Kupp, both those TE's, and Austin he was able to create a ton of big plays off short strike easy safe throws for Goff. However, SF and Atlanta defended it well and once that was disturbed, the Rams offense sputtered to the point I wonder if there is now a blueprint to slow that offense down. Now they lose Watkins and there is talk they may get rid of Austin, and all of a sudden there isnt much of a deep threat making the offense easier to defend. They are my second team, so pulling for him and the Rams, but I am not sold on Goff's season yet. He is still young and has plenty of upside still, so not condemning the kid by any means, just need to see him continue to grow in year 3. Good, it was a terrible contract the day they gave it to him. I was shocked they gave it to him in the first place. Also, I think that system used by the HC/OC will be under review next week at the GM meetings...the use of lining up at the LOS while still having the coaches radio active, is not in the spirit of the rule of play, imo. In his second year he made a quantum leap forward from his rookie year. The progression was remarkable. No one is doubting that having a talented roster with a top shelf back, a bolstered OL and a revamped receiver corps enhanced his play. But that is what smart organizations do. They put the qb they highly invested in the best possible position to succeed. The Rams lost a talented receiver in Watkins. But his departure represents the norm of player movement in the cap era. So while there might be a deficit on offense with him going to KC the organization balanced out the roster by (maybe) adding a top tier defensive player who will bolster the other side of the ball. Admittedly Goff is not as good as Wentz. There is no shame in that because Wentz is already considered one of the best qbs in the league. If he wouldn't have gotten hurt there is a good chance that he would have won the MVP. In my opinion by next year or the next year Goff is going to be in the top third qb rankings in the league. However you want to evaluate the deal the Rams made to get Goff it was a tremendous success. When I watched Goff play and Tyrod play I enviously coveted for a qb like the one in LA. Dont get me wrong, I am still optimistic on Goff, not taking anything away from his sophomore year by any means. McVay coached the team beautifully to put Goff in a position to succeed. However, he is always compared to Wentz and they are not in the same conversation IMO...at least not yet of course, kid has plenty of upside still. But...my biggest concern about the Rams next year is that when teams took away the big play off of short strikes, the offense looked meh. If Goff and the Rams are going to continue to improve on Offense, its going to need to be less dependent on short plays turning into big plays. They offense needs more balance in my opinion or it might regress next year. Its not that they cant survive losing Watkins, but as much as people like to pile on Sammy here, the truth was he opened up that underneath a LOT as he was drawing the best defenders and even double teams all season. I am not convinced Woods can still be as effective in a #1 WR role now. I hope he is and I hope the Rams keep getting better, but I just need to see it before I believe it. Wentz on the other hand I saw make a lot more elite throws and big time passes and I feel more confident in his continued growth, even though thats not guaranteed either of course. Bills would have QB (Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield) and D star (White) on a rookie deal for 4 years. They also have $100 million in cap. Trade it all for the QB.
