Lots of folks are crapping on this move, but what choice did Jax have? Bortles salary was fully GTD next season with a $19M cap hit. An extension was the only way to reduce that hit. They weren't signing Cousins in FA with Bortles eating $19M on the cap. Now, they can draft a backup in round 2 or 3, have him semi-compete with Bortles over the next 2 years, and go from there.

They had no choice with the guarantee on his salary next season and they did a good job at getting his cap hit down to $10 million. Personally I am glad he isn't our problem... 8 minutes ago, jmc12290 said: Exactly. Lots of folks are crapping on this move, but what choice did Jax have? You are correct, they didn't have a ton of options with regards to where they are now - still doesn't change the fact that he honestly is a not that good of a QB.... There wasn't much they could do without sacrificing others on the team. The unfortunate part of all this is that this talented team will go to waste. Much like the the Ravens teams of yesteryear that couldn't find a QB to lead them. It's a shame.

The guy looked plain awful against the Bills. ...thought I read that the deal is actually pretty team friendly.... The money Bortles is receiving is equal to that performance -- good, but not great. The new deal's $26.5 million guaranteed sounds like a lot individually, but when compared with recent signings ($60.5 million guaranteed for Matthew Stafford, $54 million for Aaron Rodgers, $48.7 million for Jimmy Garoppolo), it's not a massive sum. We can take that a step further when we look at average quarterback salaries, with Bortles landing alongside Philip Rivers, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Tom Brady and -- here's the clincher -- Ryan Tannehill in the $18-$20 million-per-year range. Buffalo Barbarian
Jets and Broncos are my biggest concerns for getting in our way of getting a QB. All this hype around Jacksonville was just media nonsense.
GrizzReaper
Jacksonville made a solid move there. Good for them... Bortles is still a bad QB. Good for us hes in the AFC.

Cousins is an upgrade over Bortles, but still not worth $25-30M/year in my opinion. If Bortles is worth 22.5 mill avg then Cousins is worth 25 to 27 mill easy. But I don't think Bortles is worth 22.5M/yr, either. He's another middle of the road QB that is over valued.

TheFunPolice
The Jags should add even more to their defense in free agency I would be interested to see if a defensive all-star team could actually stop great offenses in today's NFL with the rules we have now

He might not have looked that good against the Bills but he won the game for them because he was head and shoulders better than the QB he was facing. Thats a great contract for the Jags.
