Lane Johnson calls Patriots a “fear-based organization”; doesn’t think players have any fun

As a fan, I'll take the 5 rings over 1 and some fun... (although I'm obviously not an NFL player).

I get what hes saying though. You only live once and nobody wants to be miserable for large chunks of their life (not saying Pats players necessarily are).

Ive said for years though, that if not for the winning Belichick would never get away with treating players the way he does.

I was listening to it.    Thought it was interesting.

Chris Long was on the episode before this and said he’s having way more fun as an eagle as opposed to a Pat as well.

Chris Long should be having more fun.  He was literally in New England to do 1 thing.  I believe Bellichick only wanted him to be a 3rd down pass rusher and his snap count was dramatically reduced.  But...it worked.

that is why Long left.  He knew he had more 3 down football in him but that wasn’t going to happen in New England.

But Long knew exactly what he signed up for in New England.

you don’t hear Chris Hogan saying he would prefer the Rex Ryan Fun Days do you?

Lane didn’t say he preferred to have fun and not win. He said he preferred both. If he had to choose between 1 SB and happiness or 5 and misery, he picked 1. Rex Ryan type fun doesn’t figure in here, as he never even got to a SB.

I hope Chris Long had fun because he played for free (donated whole year’s salary to educational equality)

But yet free agents keep signing with them for discounted rates because it seems winning fixes everything.

I know Brady does (even though I’m pretty sure he’s funneling money from them through his company TB12) but what other FAs have signed for discounts? Gilmore didn’t.

I have a colleague who's a workaholic. He moonlighted as an engineer at a high-paced aerospace company while teaching college full-time. He has a patent. He wrote a textbook and he's working on another. He's got lots of money. By most "traditional" measures, he's more successful than I am.

But I have more fun, and I wouldn't trade places with him for anything.

Everyone's different.

If by 'fear based' he means with high expectations, then he's probably right.

At the end of the day, us regular people all have to go to work, and be there on time etc.

Should 'professional' sportsmen be held to any lesser standard than we are?

I don't doubt that the cheatriots players have some fun along the way, this stuff is all relative, but imho, it's like any job people do, in that there's a time and place for it, and with them, it's largely out of sight.

i Think this thread shows that everyone looks for something different in what they would consider a satisfying work place. Some guys want to have fun and occasional success while others would rather have a more professional environment that produces more sustainable positive results. Finding the right fit ultimately is what all organizations and individuals need to reach their goals.

At a certain point I'd think, if you have a nice nest egg and you've settled down with a wife and kids, winning becomes the top priority.

I get what Lane is saying though.  I'd much rather be in the Eagles' current environment than with the Patriots during any point of their run...well, maybe aside from their 16-0 season.

FWIW Long played 65 percent of the regular season snaps in NE. That's not exactly a 3rd down rush specialist. His role was reduced in the playoffs, so of course he had more fun in Philly.

He would rather be somewhere he can be himself vs someone he’s always worried of messing up.

Country club playpen where you don’t host a playoff game for over two decades or tough love that wins multiple titles
