GoBills808
That's fair. He's in a position though where his pay is capped. He's not the best example but Brady might be. In a totally free market his worth far exceeds his salary. I'm playing devil's advocate. It's one of the issues with laissez-faire capitalism in that it creates extraordinary differences in wealth and places the blame on those at the bottom end. PromoTheRobot
Yep. Anyone who critcizes the team or a player must be a hater. You forgot the agenda part though cause he clearly has an agenda against a franchise that hasnt made the $$$@#%!!$@ playoffs in seventeen years. 19-0 this year. I can feel it. Average margin of victory 55 pts. Pass the weed please. The really amusing thing here is its likely this guy will be broke and/or bankrupt after he retires. I mean really, is there that big a difference between a 100 million dollars worth of hookers and drugs vs 300 million dollars worth of hookers and drugs. How much sex and blow does one really need? Well clue #1 was that poster thinking that Sammy was asking for more money. He wasn't, not directly anyway. As for how much money a player should get, no one would watch the NFL without the players. So it's not unreasonable to expect a split of the billion-dollars pie.
CanadianFan
Not really to get into this too much but the wealthy people already do allocate money to society. A lot of money. The top 20% of the wealthiest people pay nearly 90% of tax money. That money pays for a lot of things that you use every day. Are you saying they should give more? I'd like to see where you get that stat from. Taxation in the world used to be a lot more progressive than it is now. Just ask Warren Buffet. His personal tax rate is less than that of his cleaning lady. Point 2 - the infrastructure of the state exists to "protect" and "enhance" the value of properties and businesses and corporations. Guess who owns said properties? Thus who should pay for said protection and enhancement?
DriveFor1Outta5
Couple of observations after reading this thread: 26CB and Kirby are doing the lord's work here, and my god are people suscepitible to misinterpreting a Watkins comment (which was totally right, btw) because they're invested in sports as some sort of morality play, with Joe Sixpack making $45k a year invoked as a foil to all the overpaid athletes out there. Do people get this worked up about Led Zeppelin's or Leonardo Di Caprio's earnings? It's all entertainment in the end, and in entertaimment, the stars get paid. I don't care how much Watkins,Di Caprio, or Led Zepplin make. The problem people have is with the words Sammy used. I would have a problem with Led Zeppelin if Robert Plant came out and said that he deserved to have as much money as Paul McCartney. Sammy is a guy who escaped a bad neighborhood as a youth. Show a little gratitude. The guy claims to be a Christian. So you don't see the irony in claiming that Watkins is 'right' about wanting a larger share when capitalism dictates his salary is determined by the free market and is thus appropriately priced? Exactly. You get paid whatever ownership dictates. If you want more you must look elsewhere. If Sammy wants more he needs to play basketball. Many many many pay essentially nothing and the rich, naturally, pay a very large portion. His stat was close enough for bar room discussion of the topic. Call_Of_Ktulu
If you had to resign Sammy right now what would you pay him? For me he is not getting paid even close to the top 10 WR's in the NFL.
DriveFor1Outta5
can we get the thread back to Watkins stupidity instead of the armchair economics I actually understand your point. Watkins simply made a comment that was poor in taste. The root issue of the debate is whether or not he crossed the line with a distasteful comment. Anything else veers dangerously close to belonging in the PPP forum. I agree. There's only so much that can be said on NFL players' intelligence. With that said there are a lot of NFL players who have demonstrated more intelligence than some of Sammy's actions/quotes have shown.

My first love of my life was a gymnast and they have an entirely different skill set but not one that should be discounted on any level. Who needs a spinner when you have a fine tuned machine? The appeles to apples comparisons are to mlb and the nba, not some mythical free market. Yet it is a far bigger business. I don't disagree with your take, btw; most of the guys in the nfl would play in the nba if given a choice. But football, both college and pro, is a much bigger business. It's what people actually like to watch (people like porn too!). Incidentally, this piece about mlb players' declining share of revenue over time is worth your time and relevant to the discussion: http://deadspin.com/mlb-has-a-big-money-problem-1742117953 .
