McDermott Coaching Style - Good or Bad

Recommended Posts

Doesn't every coach have an idea what kind of system they want to run?...what they want there identity on offense, and defense to be? seems like it would be better to draft players that fit what the identity of the rest of the team rather than draft a guy and them have to change the rest of your D or 0 just to fit that player.

Plus i feel that that system is as much about his philosophy of how he likes to approach things and his beliefs of how things should be ran. whats a good system?..one that wins.. a bad system?..one that loses.

One thing that hit me today - Don't know why I didn't realize this sooner:

Sean McDermott is a system guy.

Sounds like he has his mind made up that he has to run his defensive system. I know some other coaches who think that way. One of them just got fired from the Bills last season.

I guess McDermott is not the type of coach, nor probably has the experience to do so, who can take another team's defensive personnel and create the defense to best fit that personnel.

Bummer.

That is my first knock against the guy. But it is a significant one. Hope he gets the guys to fit his system. Not the type of coach I really wanted though. So far I like everything else about the guy that I have heard. But a guy stuck on his own system has me very concerned.

Your opinions?

My opinion and I'm going more on his pressers/the mans words then anything Dave is whille McDermott may be a systems guy that pays close attention to detail McDermott is also innovative enough and expressed the desire to tweak all 3 phases of the game as he see's fit.

HC McDermott is already Taylor making an O around Tyrod so I wouldn't underestimate his innovative capabilities.

The 1st strike against McDermott will be not giving Watkins his 5th year option and Gilly a 2nd round tender (and yes it's up to him more so then DW). Is anyone else getting the feeling McDermott thinks he can just plug and play what ever 6'4 guy at Wr and it's gonna work. Im starting to think that our Wr group is going to suck for a really long time.

Great post

Look every single NFL HC, OC, and DC are all the same

They all have their own systems and they are not particulary flexible

Its already a head scratcher why 65% of our secondary had to replaced this off season

However if he wins no one will are

If he losses, we;l look back at this off season as yet another sideways move bills style

Jerry Hughes likes the less complicated , more teaching style of McD which is the most important way to me.

The zone D might take time for the players to get in sync with the playbook.

It will take more then 1 draft to fix this roster, just hope for signs of progress this season.

The thing that triggered the thought was something he said in his presser today - Still need to find the cornerbacks to fit his defense. That is the thought that triggered it. Gives me pause about his mentality towards football in general. I hate coaches who think winning or losing is more based on their genius schemes rather than the players' ability to make plays. I think that line of thinking is dead wrong.

maybe he just meant we need more cbs cause we really only have 3 or 4

It's what fans do.

Not like I am crucifying him. Just expressing a concern that dawned on me unexpectedly today out of the blue. Not that big of a deal.

Agree. Not Rex and as long as he wins.

Gugny's response was spot on. I dont understand how this question can be posed before he coaches the season let along 1 game.
