Roster make-up

Recommended Posts

I can't see Jones beating out EJ for second string and cutting EJ does nothing for the salary cap. That means the Bills will carry three QB's and two kickers on the 53 man roster. That is a waste of two spots.

I think they only keep 5 WR this year and hope one of the DB's can be the gunner. The 3rd - 8th WR are basically interchangeable and mostly dreadful. With a mostly veteran line I think they will also carry one less offensive lineman.

Need to upgrade Carpenter next year.

What are your thoughts?

Carpenter isn't NFL material if he can't do kickoffs

I don't think it was ever the case that he couldn't do kick offs. It was more the case that Gay particularly in 2014 was nailing them through the endzone with such regularity and we had a defense on whom it was so difficult to move the ball that making every team go 80 yards against us was worth the roster spot. It also had the benefit in 2014 of Carp (possibly because that was all he had to do) being money on FGs. For a team that struggled to put it in the endzone on offense that mattered greatly. In 2014 those things worked and I think it made sense as a result to keep 2 kickers.

In 2015..... Carp didn't kick well and Gay was not so consistent. Basically if you have two specialist kickers both doing their job at 99% that is worth more than a 6th receiver for a defense first team. If your defense is not good then even if both kickers are 99% (and neither was in 2015) it is hard to argue it makes sense.

With touchbacks going to the 25 yard line (at least for this year) I don't see them keeping an extra K (Gay) strictly for kickoffs. And I agree that they'll keep those 3 QBs and EJ will be the backup.

# QBs for sure are necessary for development. 5 receivers is likely as we have speed at running back to that can play a type of flanker in the spread so that helps with one less receiver. # 4-8 receivers are intercangeable when you have a strong running back position.

I think the 2 kicker issue may come down to the health of the o-line. If we are healthy on the line then a rookie on practice squad is good back up, if not then we carry more o line and only 1 kicker.

They only need to dress 2 QB's on Sunday.

Of which none of them need to wear make up.

This rule change may help Carpenter keep his job. He could lose his job to Gay or Morgan, but not likely.

The only roster "makeup" I care for is eye black.

Mullets/Cornrows are optional.

Nice post.

I hope Bills can get the roster down to one kicker honestly. and ST improves overall.

My wonder is how many players can play both ST and be somewhat effective on either side of the LoS. The more duality they can create the better.

Whats going to happen with Easly to start the season?

(Teams can designate a player as a "Post-June 1 cut," meaning the dead money can be spread over the next two years. We've marked the cuts where it's logical for them to use this designation.)

http://www.thescore.com/nfl/news/975297

June 1st designations are only useful to teams that need space to sign draft picks so the list could have been parsed down to those teams. It is from March 7th so some of their suggestions have already been cut.

Look, it's pretty obvious that the Bills will keep Taylor, Manuel, and C. Jones at QB. The Bills nothing by cutting Manuel because his $2M+ contract counts against the cap no matter what they do.

The new rule that brings the ball out to the 25 yd line on touchbacks will eliminate the need for KO specialist J. Gay. Thus the Bills keep only 1 kicker (Carpenter).

My projected 53 man roster makeup at this time. I expect more players to be signed/injured, which will certainly change the final makeup.

This takes into account that the Bills sign WR/KR A. Roberts and that DE/DT Sh. Lawson will start the season on injured reserve.

QB(3): Taylor/Manuel/Jones.

RB(4): McCoy/K. Williams/J. Williams/Gillislee.

FB(1): Felton.

TE(3): Clay/Dray/Gragg.

WR(6): Watkins/Woods/A. Roberts/Hankerson/Salas/Listenbee.

OT(4): Glenn/Henderson/Mills/Kouandjio.

OG(2): Incognito/Miller.

OC(2): Wood/Velasco.

K(1): Carpenter.

P(1): Schmidt.

LS(1): Sanborn.

DL(9): Dareus/K. Williams/Washington/Bryant/D. Zimmer/Hughes/M. Lawson/L. Alexander/Enemkpali.

LB(5): Ragland/P. Brown/Z. Brown/Reddick/Striker.

CB(6): Gilmore/Darby/Robey/Moore/C. White/Butler.

S(5): A. Williams/Graham/Blanton/Anderson/D. Williams.

The season outcome will hinge on key players staying healthy and Taylor/Watkins/McCoy having a big year.
