Salary Cap Thread (post-Cordy's Glenn extension)

Recommended Posts

Starting this up since the cap is being discussed in multiple threads and I'm too dumb to keep up with all of them.

As of this morning, Spotrac has the Bills with about 14.2M in cap space, but they project the rookie pool to drop that down to about 8.6M.

What do we think the Bills should/will do with that space?

Not spend it, roll it over to next year and sign Gilmore and taylor

They should extend Gilmore now. That would save about $5M on the cap this year. They should then use some of the $13.6M in cap room to sign a good RT. Then roll the remainder into next year, to give them over $15M in cap room to re-sign TT if he shows he's worth it.

I thought we all agreed that 5.6M was too much cap space for rookies. I thought we said something closer to 3 mil because of the rule of 53.

Why do they need to clear cap with Gilmore at this point? I agree extend him but why push hits down the line with it? Edited by NoSaint

I've had that thought too, especially if we can get the Gilmore deal done.

I posted in another thread that I'm not worried about tagging Taylor if necessary. We roll over 13.5M in dead money next year. Shaq makes Manny a backup and EJ is out the door so we save 6m there. Tack on the 3 M from Tyrod's deal and you're at $21.5 million. That should be enough, or close to it.

Genuine question: what's the difference between rolling money over and structuring a contract so that same money is in the cap hit next year?

It seems to me they are structuring the contracts the way they are (with minimal cap hit this year) for a reason, and intend to make a few late value free agent signings, as Whaley said they were going to do before it all started. Or the money is being freed to give Taylor a good faith raise.

As it stands now, they should have over 40m of available cap in 2017, so while as a QB and a CB the TT/Gilmore contracts will be pretty large, they will still fit.

For being in what some called a bleak and dire salary cap situation because of last year's activity, our front office is operating VERY well. We're retaining our core players with forward thinking and planning. I'm no longer shocked to see a good player retained. Nor will I be surprised when later free agents sign in Buffalo. Between Pegula's financial wealth, mindset of turning everything first rate (facility upgrades, approach to coaching/specialist hires, etc.)....Buffalo is becoming a sought destination around the league. Perform well and you'll get paid. Good things are coming my friends! I'm drinking the koolaid and it tastes oh so good!

If there is an upgrade to be made, go for it but don't reach and overpay. Also, I'd look to get Gilmore under a long-term contract and possibly front load his a little more than Cordy's.

T.T, I hate to say it as good as he was last year, I think we need to see how he progresses throughout the first half of the season, if it looks like he's continuing to get better, then pull the trigger and sign him to a fair starting QB contract.

Tyrod Taylor is a true professional that has placed his trust in the organization and the process. I really hope he can stay healthy to allow his play determine his overall financial success. He's a guy that deserves to be taken care of (great teammate, student of the game, etc.). To me, he's turning into the Fred Jackson of this team, a quite leader that is very easy to like and pull for, he is not a me first guy. Lock him up as early as possible.

According to Buffalo News "expert' Jerah Sullivan we are doomed because of this contract. So we should be fine.

Not only that, but Bucky says the draft picks probably suck because the Bills suck. So why spend any money on them. Rex sucks, they should just forfeit the season and disband.
