From peter king's column today:

• Kickers now fail, just like real people. PATs missed in 256 games last year: eight. PATs missed in 62 games this year, with the scrimmage line moved back 13 yards: 17. This was a particularly brutal weekend, with 10 kicks missed from 40 yards and in (six field goals, four extra points). Missing two on Thursday night cost Josh Scobee his job in Pittsburgh, and don’t be surprised to see rookie Kyle Brindza, who missed five in the past two Bucs games, walk the plank in Tampa. I think the trend has to do with the youth at the position—12 of 32 teams are using kickers in their first years with their teams—and the mental game the longer PAT has forced kickers to deal with. Kickers are lottery tickets. You just pick one and pray.

me thinks the Bucs may cut a kicker very soon. That Aside, this carrying a kick off specialist. and a kicker who sucked in pre season and since, needs some FO attention. I really would hate to see a 40+ yarder needed with a game on the line and Carpenter the kicker. The dude does not inspire confidence. His mojo is gone.

IMO

Actually he's pretty good on the longer kicks. It seems to be the shorter ones that are giving him trouble.

Think back and ask yourself honestly, how many kicks just made it in last season across the league?

Now subtract 2 feet on each side and you have to expect the % of missed kicks increase.

Narrowed from 18 feet to 14 feet this season.

The purpose here is to make teams go for 2 or go for broke. It adds excitement to the game. What was automatic before needs work now.

What happened to all the good kickers in the NFL?

I wouldn't cut Dan Carpenter but I would give him the time he needs to get the leg healthy. As someone said - he's a great kicker *when* healthy.

I had no freakin idea that the goal posts had been narrowed from 18 feet to 14 feet, IN ADDITION to moving the line of scrimmage back 13 yards....holy crap!!!
