Wow! They aren't playing around with this guy. Personally I don't care for the dude but dang, he's got to be thinking, "I better chill out". Next illegal hit almost guarantees he'll be suspended...

I'm curious to see what his reaction is. I'm not convinced it was a bad hit.I know the NFL is trying to change but it is a fast and physical game.

I am beginning to wonder if he will ever get suspended. Seems like he pays a fine almost every week. If he doesn't get suspended how can people be upset that Andre Johson didn't get suspended? Harrison is just a dirty player, plain and simple. Eventually he will paralyze someone or even worse, then the league might wish they did something besides collect his money for charity.

Was it because it was helmet to helmet or because he was a defenseless player?

Most likley because he left his feet like a missile and hit head first.

I hope he talks about retirement again... that was super funny.

lol

EDIT:

BTW he's been fined 17% (125K) of his 755K salary this year...although he got 10M bonus last year and a 2.8M bonus this year.

Was it because it was helmet to helmet or because he was a defenseless player?

Steelers LB James Harrison has been fined $25,000 for roughing the passer, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Harrison made “helmet contact” to the chest of Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was in a defenseless position at the time the contact was made.

So it was more or less for spearing a defenseless player, not contact to the head. I can see that.

They said helmet to chest and that Fitz was in a defenseless position. Truth is, it happened so fast that I thought the top of Harrison's helmet connected with Fitz's chin. I am surprised he wasn't knocked out cold.

Either way, I saw the hit on Brees by Harrison, and the way he speared the Brown's receiver helmet to helmet when the receiver was already on the ground... the dude needs to chill. You can play fast and physical, you just have to make an effort to move that helmet to the side - most other defensive players appear to be capable of making big hits cleanly why not Harrison?

I don't know who this guy thinks he is. He is a good player, but He seriously needs to re-think his approach.

He's got two kids.

Great, Mike. How about the guy Harrison eventually ends up paralyzing or crippling for life? How many kids does that guy have?

LOL, this guy's ridiculous. I don't know if it's for show or what. Didn't he also refuse to go to some team function after they won the Super Bowl?

Which is exactly what told me that it could not have been helmet to head/chin.

- OK that where I have a serious beef with this fine. The NFL admits it was a helmet to chest contact. Yet it wasnt spearing, because his head was up and his facemask went into his chest and not the top of the helmet.

How else is he supposed to hit someone? YEARS ago they stopped teaching players to lower their head, and hit the the top of the shoulder because of all the neck injuries (kevin evertte anyone? Or how about this http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20020027-10391704.html ) When a player lowers their head, so that the spine is closer to level with the ground (and not perpendicular), they are at HUGE risk. They dont always make contact with the shoulder and ofter end up jamming players with the neck either head on or to the side. I myself partially tore nerves in my sholder and lost 30% of my strenth in my left arm playing in highschool by taking a hit on the side of my head because I didnt keep it up. It took at least 6 months to get back to 100%

Thats why nowadays it is taught at all levels of football to go "dobber to dobber" or "Power Z" or whatever you wanna call it. Head up, knees bent, bury your facemask in the guys numbers - taking the bulk of the force in the chest. Poz does a very good job at this if you ever notice how he tackles. IMO thats what Harrison did to Fitz, it was boarderline textbook. Maybe the top of his hat got Fitz chin, and Harrison being a small guy shoulda been lower, but what about taller defenders? Fitz isnt very tall, so he will inevitably get hit in the face more than taller guys. When a guy hits a QB with a safe (by safe i mean for the defender - they are at risk too), form tackle like that I dont think it should be penalized (I didnt think it was late or Fitz was "defenseless" - all QBs are defenseless when they are back there). That is only going to result in defenders getting neck injuries and paralized. Maybe they need to legalize "facemask hits" vrs "helmet" or "crown of the helemt hits" which remain illegal. Next week or next year I dont want to see Harrison paralized from the chest down because he flies into someone with his head down. Thats what they are moving towards with these rules.

Upon further review (placing it in another financial perspective), his, six-year contract has an average compensation of $8.53 million per year. So based on that, $150K worth of fines is .018% of his annual pay. For a person making the average U.S. per capita income of $39,000, that is the equivalent of a $7 fine. I repeat, a $7 fine.

Obviously on the other hand, he's been fined $150,000 so far this year and that is a lot of money. But not compared to what he makes.

Excellent post. However, I dont see how harrison was trying to hit with his head up. If you compare this hit with the one he had against the Browns which started this whole "leading with the helmet" fining spree, it is the exact same play only without a helmet to helmet. Its a dirty way to hit, and the NFL doesnt want it for either the defender breaking his neck or breaking something on the guy he's hitting. Harrison seems to have a tendency to put his head down and ram himself into someone if he gets the chance. He's not going to stop until he gets suspended.
