I would love to bring him back but I tend to agree he wants a big contract and is older and banged up. He is so important to the defense but the Bills have to make cuts somewhere and it would be better to give Edumonds the deal and keep a 25 year old LB. Poyer is a warrior and I think he has been such a big part of this teams success since he got here in 2017

Jets and Dolphins really fell apart and the Pats limped to the finish. The futures for all three teams are interesting. All 3 teams feature a strong defense. The Jets and Fins feature decent to good offensive supporting casts but no team features a coherent plan at QB. Mac Jones is at best a game manager, The Jets are starting over and the Fins have Tua who has flashed but not been all that impressive at times and has a long injury history. I suspect the division will be toughish next season with every team having a good defense but the Bills should still come up the favorites.

Buffalo News analysis of Tremaine Edmunds this season
billsfan89 replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
Let Oliver play out 2023 and make a decision then in my opinion -
I would prefer this team boost the play of the Oline and get a cheaper vet slot WR. I know a lot of people are down on Davis but I think he is a fine WR2 and next season could breakout as he now has a full season getting a larger workload. Davis this year in 16 games is going to finish with about 800-950 yards and 8-10 TD’s, that’s not the breakout I wanted but it is a respectable WR2 season esp given the fact that he was banged up early in the season. Diggs is a quality WR1 and Mac a good gadget WR and Knox at TE brings some good pass catching ability to the offense. If this team has a respectable and reliable slot WR the offense would have enough firepower. The team doesn’t need to go big game hunting for a WR1A when the Oline is a far bigger issue and a reliable slot WR would be a cheaper fix to the consistency of the passing offense.

If Somehow Hyde Returns, We Win The Super Bowl
billsfan89 replied to Dick_Cheney's topic in The Stadium Wall
Has any player come back from an in season injury comparable to this? I know Hyde is trying to work out and maybe come back deep into January but I just don’t see it happening. I don’t even see Crowder coming back. Maybe Benford and Kumerow but not those two. -
The offense missed having a reliable slot WR badly. Davis has been a mid-level WR2 and Crowder was supposed to platoon with Mac at the slot but Crowder got hurt and Mac is more of a gadget WR4 player and Shakir has struggled predictably as a rookie. The badly need a reliable slot WR. Brining back Beasley makes sense given the context of the situation. Even if Beasley is just good for 3 catches 30 yards in a playoff game those 2-3 first downs might make the difference. Even kicking the tires on Brown is worth a shot. But my point is having high expectations for either (esp Brown) is not smart. Both guys are a bit older for the position and have a banged up injury history and neither really stuck with a team this year for a reason even though Beasley got a decent shot with Tampa. I like both moves these are the low risk moderate reward moves to make in season, I just don’t have high expectations.

If I were the Bills I would be looking for a high end slot WR. I know a lot of fans want that 1A WR that we wanted Gabe to blossom into but I think this teams dollars are better spent finding a high quality slot WR and developing Shakir and maybe a WR picked in round 3 or 4. Gabe is going to finish the season with between 800-1000 yards and 8-10 TD's in 16 games (was hurt for one game and banged up several others) that's not bad WR2 production and I think given a full year as a WR2 Davis could improve in year 4 and make more of an impact. Adding a true high quality slot WR would give Josh that short to mid yard option to break two deep zones down and it would be massively cheaper than finding a dynamic WR on. the outside. You could then add a WR in round 3 for some depth and to develop long term. I would then rather spend the first round pick on the O-line where there is a more glaring need.
-
The team was desperate for help at WR so they took a chance on two WR’s who haven’t played much or at all this season.
-
It’s a smart move to bring in a slot WR who knows Josh and the system and Brown is just cheap vet depth at a position where the Bills could use more production. But both moves are kind of just throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick.
-
Both Cole and Smoke were desperation moves (smart desperation moves but moves made out of desperation) and given that both guys were off the scrap head I think they are just working both of them in slowly for a playoff run esp Cole who has more of a niche in the offense as there really is no true slot WR on the team.

Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson failing good for QB market.

A long way to go on those deals both could easily turn it around and make those deals seem worth it. -
Chris Simms says whoever Tre is covering will be open
billsfan89 replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Tre has been pretty good from my eye test? I know he hasn’t quite been his former self but I think he is still a quality player. Bengals WR’s will test the secondary for sure. -
The Oline is better at run blocking than they are at pass blocking. The offense needs to lean into that if they want to win these games. Have to use the run to set up the pass

I think if Brown was healthy consistently he would be a much better player. He had back surgery during the offseason and couldn’t practice until late August so he couldn’t learn a new scheme then just as he starts to pick up his play he gets an ankle injury and misses a few games. I think his play against the Bears was his best game so here is hoping he is turning a corner again. If I were McBeane I would bring in a vet RT to compete with him in 2023 I know they brought in Queese but they need someone there who is a better pass blocker. It would push Brown and help him by having a vet to learn from and help the Oline depth which has been pretty bad this season. I am fine with the Dawkins-Bates-Mitch side of the line but the right side of the line and the depth are horrible. Likely have to spend the teams first round pick or a RT or RG and a 3rd or 4th round pick at center to get an heir apparent for Mitch and solidify the depth

I think the Jets are going to go after Jimmy G hard or trade up for a QB and have Mike White as the placeholder and Flacco as the mentor. They have a nice roster and will have the cap space to add some pieces but they lack a QB and that’s going to set them back from being anything more than a “good” team. Dolphins have a lot of talent on the roster but don’t have a ton of draft capital nor do they have great cap space. They also have a fragile and limited QB in Tua. Even if they manage to patch up the Oline and add a piece or two to the defense they will be in a similar situation to the Jets tough but nothing more. The Pats have the draft capital and cap space to make serious moves but they also don’t have a good QB and are the least talented of the three AFCE teams. Once again I can see them going on a big spending spree to add some playmakers on offense but as long as Mac Jones is their QB and they are unable to acquire real difference makers at WR they will be a solid but unspectacular team. The AFCE is likely going to be a tough division going forward. All 3 teams will likely have good defenses and will supplement their offensive talent in some fashion. The Jets are the most threatening in my opinion because they aren’t locked into a mediocre QB situation but acquiring a QB for them won’t be easy either. The Bills should still be able to handle the division but it won’t be an cakewalk at any point in the next 2 years in my opinion.

Tyler Bass is the Bills' best pick of the 2020 draft
billsfan89 replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
It is a very solid draft overall. Bass is a ST gem, Davis is a solid WR2 even if he in year 3 hasn’t blossomed into the Pro Bowl player we had hoped he still in 14 games (with a few games playing really hurt) close to 800 yards and 7 TD’s. Given his age I think he develops more in year 4. AJE has 6.5 sacks this season and is developing into a pretty effective DE certainly will be a high end rotational DE or better in his career. Dane Jackson is a solid CB, good depth and a nice dime back too. That draft produced 4 really productive players along with a nice UDFA find in Gilliam. It is not a home run draft yet (certainly a nice double) but if Davis and AJE take another step up it certainly could be. -
Daboll’s 2022 is very reminiscent of the Bills 2017 season. The Bills in 2017 over achieved massively and didn’t have great rankings on either side of the ball but they found ways to win games despite not being a really talented team. The question for Daboll and the Giants is who will be their QB? Do they have faith that Danny Jones on a contract that is at least going to eat up 25ish million a year is the answer? Will they go all out and draft a rookie and trade away the farm and reset the clock so to speak? The Bills in 2017 had already acquired massive draft capital with 5 picks in the first three rounds (after the Benjamin trade) and were clearly aiming for the 2018 QB class. The Giants don’t have that same draft capital and trajectory. They have some nice talent on both sides of the ball but they need a direction at QB.

After 2021 the Bills had a significant amount of needs. So it isn’t like this team is in that bad shape going into 2023. Going into 2021 The Dline needed a massive overhaul. Vernon Butler and Star were really trash up the middle, Harry was also a free agent. Jerry and Addison while not tragic were not getting it done off the edge. Defensively the team also had a need at corner as Levi Wallace was not getting it done and Tre was coming off a serious injury. The Bills also had a need at RG and needed to get better at RB. The team also needed to address the slot WR position. Beane tried to make significant moves at all these areas of need. Von was brought in to be the killer edge rusher and Shaq was brought in for vet depth. The DT room was completely overhauled to be bigger and tougher against the run. And Elam was drafted up high to get faster and more athletic at corner. On offense they brought in Crowder and OJ Howard to address the loss of Beasley and Sanders (while also drafting Shakir) and then drafted Cook to be more dynamic out the backfield and added Saffold to address the RG spot. The defensive moves ended up working out better as the DT overhaul and the additions of Shaq and Von have been great while Elam looks to be a nice addition to the secondary even if he is a bit uneven at times. Offensively the addition of Cook and the in season acquisition of Hines are looking good but at WR Crowder got hurt and Howard was a bust. Saffold has also been pretty bad at RG.

Fully agree with this list. Cook/Motor/Hines are a really good trio of RB’s. But as a duo Motor and Cook aren’t the best. Doesn’t mean they can’t get the job done and the Bills don’t have a good stable of backs just no need to get crazy. My hope is that Hines and Motor come back on reasonable deals. Hines adds a lot of value as a receiver and returner while Motor is a nice all around back. They would both complement Cook nicely.

Glazer reports Jets moving on from Wilson.
billsfan89 replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Wilson lost the locker room and I don’t think he is right for the brutal NYC media market. Odds are he gets traded for a conditional mid round pick and the Jets make a move up for a rookie QB and have Flacco as the vet mentor and Mike White as the stop gap. I am not so sure what team would want to kick the tires on him. Perhaps a team with a vet QB that might be interested in developing him for a year or two.
