Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
dorquemada replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
What I dont get is this idea that only the Buffalo Bills are keeping their powder dry, while every other team is going 110%. Was Cole Bishop explicitly coached to take wrong angles and be 5 yards off the play? -

Can't believe Babich called the stand around coverage. He should be fired. -
What? you have Hamler > Samuel? Thats insane. I have seen like nothing from Hamler. Coverage bust TD and couldnt drag feet to get in the end zone. This is after he got cur by his first team. I get Samuel underwhelmed but wow there is a big difference between those two. We had both last year for the playoffs and I preferred what Samuel did to Cooper. If its all about winning a super bowl then playoff stats are what its all about. Samuel had a much greater contribution than Cooper. Why is Cooper out of a job? Is he holding for a bigger contract?

Hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine arrived in Washington for high-stakes meetings to discuss a possible path to peace with Moscow, Russian attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia killed 10 people and injured dozens, the local authorities said. Ukrainian officials pointed to the attacks as a further sign that Russia had no intention of halting hostilities. “That’s why Putin doesn’t want to cease fire,” said Andriy Yermak, Mr. Zelensky’s chief of staff. “He enjoys shelling peaceful cities while talking about his desire to end the war.” https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/08/18/us/trump-zelensky-ukraine-putin

While their receivers were running routes, our DBs were standing in their zones. Standing in their zones. You could clearly see it on a crossing route from the endzone camera. -
Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread
CincyBillsFan replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bears had multiple reasons to play well. They obviously scripted their opening TD drive after taking the ball on winning the coin flip. There's been a lot of negative noise coming out of the Bears training camp about the QB & new coach not being on the same page. Bottom line is when one team needs to win the game in preseaon it almost always turns into a head scratching blowout of the better team. The best way to describe last nights game was that it looked like how the Bills have played their final preseason game over the last few years. A lot of marginal and likely to be cut players right from the get go. The difference was that unlike previous years Chicago did not reciprocate and played their starters and key back ups the entire first half. -
They showed Bosa yawning on the sidelines and I see on social media how tired they all are. from one guy yawning. Lol. There were a couple factors.. I think Chicago and Ben Johnson were trying to win that game, and win big. The Bears are resetting the culture. They brought the house on White and Trubisky on several 2nd and 3rd and longs. The Bills were definitely using some fringe guys in the first half. That being said, we hoped a few players that we know will be on the team would POP, and that didn't happen. And some guys looked slow and physically not there.

I've seen this several times in the past few years, but asking about a situation like Dewayne Carter's fumble recovery for a touchdown that was overturned yesterday. First of all, I thought the tuck rule had been eliminated and it seemed on the replays that the quarterback had decided against throwing the ball and was trying to pull the ball back to his body. Is this not what the tuck rule was and should have resulted in a fumble? Second part of the question, if the tuck rule does not apply and the officials can go back and call it an incomplete pass, I've never seen them in this situation assess an intentional grounding penalty. It seems to me in these situations where a fumble is turned into an incomplete pass that there is almost never a receiver in the area. Are they not allowed to assess a penalty retroactively? Or is there some other reason why this isn't a penalty?

Every time I visit the board after a rough outing and see all these whacky posts my brain automatically starts playing that old "Crying" song by Roy Orbison.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 2
billsbackto81 replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's scary and uninspiring to think that an injury prone Rapp is currently our most experienced and reliable safety. I can't stomach another season (though all of us may most likely have to) with this safety group. They are barely 2nd string quality and if this team suffers another injury to one of the starting CBs their lack of play making will be even more insurmountable. This group may be able to reach the postseason because Allen can carry this defense against mediocre competition in the regular season. But in the playoffs against offenses like KC and Baltimore it may very well end in another nail biter with us on the 💩 end of it. Of course it's JMHO..... -
This deal has a long way to go. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/18/world/europe/putin-trump-zelensky-ukraine.html The territory proposal by Mr. Putin has renewed the possibility of friction between Washington and Kyiv, which Moscow would welcome after celebrating the Oval Office blowup between the American and Ukrainian leaders earlier this year. “It’s a very smart ploy by Putin,” said Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. Mr. Gabuev said the proposal could be a “poison pill” designed to weaken Ukraine internally or get Mr. Trump to walk away from Mr. Zelensky if the Ukrainian leader refuses. Ukraine’s Constitution bars ceding territory other than through a nationwide referendum. A recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology found that 78 percent of Ukrainians were against transferring territory controlled by Ukraine to Russia. The Kremlin typically sees the Donbas as comprising the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine. Moscow has taken nearly all of Luhansk, but despite trying for more than a decade, it hasn’t managed to wrest full control of the Donetsk region. Ukraine still controls more than 2,500 square miles of territory there. It has strategic value for Ukraine. Two cities, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, have served as a Ukrainian military hub since Russia mounted a hybrid invasion of the area in 2014 and are among the most heavily fortified parts of the front. If Ukrainian forces were to fall back, they would lose those defenses. At least 200,000 Ukrainians also still live on the land. “Some of Ukraine’s strongest defensive positions are in Donetsk, and ceding those defenses would position Russia to reattack in the future from a much more advantageous position,” said David Shimer, who led Ukraine policy on the White House National Security Council during the Biden administration. Ceding the region, he said, would be a “massive concession.”

Another one - Trey Hendrickson asks for a trade from Cincy
SoTier replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bengals don't have to win their division to make the playoffs and have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Their problem is that they can't even make the playoffs with a last place schedule, the best QB/WR combo in the NFL, and a 3-3 divisional record because their OL doesn't protect Burrow well enough, their running game is mediocre, and their defense stinks. Their "solution" is to double down on their receiving corps and kick their best defender to the curb. -
Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread

And 2 years ago we were down to the Steelers 27 - 0 going into the 4th quarter of that preseason game. Are the people panicking over this loss thinking that the Patriots are Super Bowl bound with their 2 - 0 PS start? After all they beat a good Washington team 48 - 14 and led 27 - 0 at half. The most interesting thing about last nights game was that since McD became head coach the Bills have always used the 2nd to last preseason game to get the starters 1 - 2 quarters of playing time. Yesterday they completely abandoned that. -

The good: The game ended and we don't have to watch that ****. At least for now. The bad: Penalties! Why do McD's teams not get penalties in check until like week 9 or 10.......every year? -
Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 2
LEBills replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
There were so many layers to this game. First, the amount of players that were draft picks by the Bills at any point was incredibly small. Especially compared to who the Bears played. I can’t really say a past UDFA or an inexpensive free agent did poorly in this game. So Mike White, Andreesen, Davidson, Elijah Moore just kinda played how you would expect. Unfortunately, the former draft picks that did play just weren’t good. Bishop I have never been very excited for him but I will hold out hope that he can develop with more reps. LJ is just lost out there but I think he did a bit better than last week, Dwayne Carter is just a guy, Javon Soloman unfortunately I don’t think makes the roster he was so unimpressive in this game getting stymied over and over. Ulofoshio we know won’t be making this team. Dequan Hardy I think may be playing injured. Strong was mostly just out there, Hancock was streaky but may play Safety for us this year. Walker and Sanders didn’t do much though Sanders didn’t play much that I saw, and I thought Lundt showed some good movement and fight. In the end what I took away from last night was that was about as discombobulated of an effort as I had ever seen from this regime. The talent gap certainly was there, but it seemed like the players were just lost out there. Second, our safeties are going to be a problem all year and I think we may see a first round pick there next year. Third, if I was Beane, I would sit on my hands in free agency the next few years. As tempting as it is to fill holes there, there are way more misses than hits in his past. It was another uninspiring Hoecht performance from what I noticed of him. I would try to trade down in the draft and stuff the back end of the roster with draft picks as much as possible. When you miss in those picks, they are not as costly. Finally, it may be time to spend a draft pick on a QB. Not a Jake Fromm type, but someone with a good arm who can move well and hope you can develop him behind Josh. The rotating noodle arms behind Josh are relatively expensive and have no upside. It’s been described as a strong QB draft upcoming, so maybe a 4th rounder or so could be used there. -

Agree, i would also ask posters which tape do other teams are gonna use to scout. This preseason or last year? Of course the Ravens are gonna try to run it down our throats. Its what they do and we struggled against it last year. None of the preseason matters except for talent evaluation. Im not thrilled so many players aint living up to the test, but most of them are not going to be playing. -
Coach Tuesday started following Early returns on 2024 Draft is awful

Dewayne Carter played deep into the game last night. Now, it's possible they're just testing him at both interior DL spots and wanted to get extended looks at that, but it's also possible his job is in jeopardy. He'd probably be a trade candidate as opposed to an outright release, but it's clear he has a lot of work to do to carve out a regular role for himself on this team.

Did Darrick Forrest play? He seems to be going the way of Mike Edwards from last year…. It’s so weird our safeties seem to stink, but when we bring in some FA competition (albeit mediocre), the FA’s don’t really get ever heard from. -
Don't know for sure but my guess is that Moore makes the roster. Shavers looks like he has earned his spot. Shavers would have no problem making many NFL rosters if there was more explosion to his game. His routes appear to have been solid though albeit generally against second and third tier defenders.
-
I think it would be smart to keep some young guys. Certainly Shavers has shown Moore and Sander and he also fits a type that would add diversity to the receiving corps. They could use a big guy with speed. Use Hamler to fill in the quick small slot guy spot. Several have pointed out that it doesn't make cap sense to cut Sanders, but why not put him on IR? Doesn't help financially to cut him anyway, just need to open up the roster spot. Give him one of the IR to return slots and that way he is also held in reserve if he is finally healthy and if the young guys don't work out. Oh...but we'd have to make sure he is injured at cut down day in order to put him on IR. Let me check...does cut down happen on a day that ends in "d-a-y"? Okay...we good.
