In 1964 when Philbin came out, Bills DE's were Ron McDole and Tom Day. Mc Dole was one of the elite DE's in the league who went on to a long and storied 240 game career. I doubt Philbin in his first few years would have cracked the starting lineup at DE until after Day moved on in 1967. Our Outside linebackers at the time were Stratton and Tracey, who were both studs from 64-66 as well.

I am huge supporter of both Beane and McDermott. McDermott needs to get better at being flexible and thinking on his feet, he also needs to get better at hiring Special Teams Coordinators.
