Cooks on Josh’s TD run

Not sure if this has been talked about, but I want to give huge props to Brandon Cooks on Josh’s TD. First, if Josh had any time, Cooks beat his guy clean and was open for a big play. Second, after Josh took off, Cooks continued his route so his guy would keep following him, then just stopped and blocked the dude the last 10 yards into the end zone. Great play by him

I saw some video of this.  He turned and saw Josh running.  He kept his hand up like he was open faking the DB into believing he had to continue covering him.  And then he walled him off after the gig was up.

I was also impressed how he kept the db in front of him, to avoid a phantom holding call.  Vet move there.

I was focusing on Shavers a lot the last game - dude blocks his a$$ off, never takes a play off

Cooks able to threaten down field is a great development imo.  That with the 9 stop are ways to move coverage back.   Also, liked the wrinkle of Cooks lined up in the backfield.  That created the explosive to Cook.

I’m torn because I absolutely love what I’ve seen out of Brandin Cooks and am thankful he’s on our team BUT I’m also disgusted with Brandon Beane that our best WR was the 4th best WR on the WORST team in the league and was let go. My mind is blows with how incompetent this FO is with receivers. But back to Cooks. I hope he and Josh develop a rapport Because dude can still play and is an exceptional route runner creating separation.

Also, gotta admit, I was definitely surprised Brady called a play where a guy actually went deep!

Did it scare anyone else that he just might get a holding call? I mean, that’s the kinda thing you almost expect.

Sure.

 

But the MAIN reason Josh had a lane was Dion.  Go back and watch how Dion basically bumped the outside rusher just enough, then picked up the inside rusher correctly.  It was a great play by Dion to clear the lane.

Dion credited David Edwards for the call telling Dion to take the inside guy. Dion said he would have messed up that play if not for David’s call. Amazing that they basically let the end go free and trust Josh to make him miss.

 

I think that has to do with them using 5-man protection so much; Josh is responsible to avoid the free guy the 6th lineman would have taken on. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Palmer is a good blocking WR.  And we know Gabe is.  Keon could be, if he had heart

We slide our line a lot and sometimes leave one open rusher on 6 man rushes instead of blocking a running back

 

Because they don't have a good chance of getting Josh to the ground.. he gives them a pump they leave their feet he skirts them 

 

Happens every single week..  or on the long touchdown run he just did your classic quarterback drill of stepping up strong in the pocket didn't even pump

 

That's why they do those drills where they step up in the pocket while getting whacked by pads and stuff... It's muscle memory and you're not beating that rusher by backing up in the pocket.. you hit your back step and step up strong

Full credit to Cooks, but when that DB looked back and saw Allen running full speed his direction like a runaway racehorse, well, let's just say he didn't fight too hard to get unblocked.

I forget who, but last year when I commented on Keon getting outplayed by Mack Hollins because of Hollins blocking, I was told that I was mistaken and Keon was an excellent blocker
