Sean apologists... If McD gets fired without ever winning a Super Bowl, you will...

  1. 1. What will Sean applogists do when he is fired from Buffalo without ever winning a SB?

    • Finally eat crow and understand he wasted the career of the Greatest Bill of All Time with his weak defense, bad gameplans, and major in-game mistakes
    • Be just as bummed as everyone, but think it wasnt his fault and he just needed a couple more lucky breaks and he couldve done it
    • I'm happy with our handful of Division championships and nothing else to show from finally hitting the lottery on a Franchise QB and Greatest Bill of All Time

Depends on how you define "perennial contender".

I agree with @MJS and others that he'd be hired right away, and could elevate a bottom-dweller. He wouldve been perfect in Carolina the last couple of years. Weakish division. They'd be in the hunt and favored to take that Division every year, therefore a perennial contender.

But that doesnt change anything here, and isnt even relevant to our situation and conversation.

McD pretty much admits it himself. The signs all over OBD say "Playoff Caliber". He's never changed them to "Championship Caliber" when that is the current goal.

I think Bill’s problem is he couldn’t envision a world where he couldn’t be coach and gm.  Very likely would’ve been scooped up again otherwise

Tomlin will get scooped up very fast if he leaves also imo.  With that anonymous report that a veteran hc is lookin for a change of scenery and staring at their first below .500 season in awhile I think that’s probably Tomlin wanting to go to NYG

I guess when I see "perennial contender" I think of a team that has a reasonable chance to compete for a Super Bowl.

That was not the 2017 Bills. That was not the 2021 Patriots. That was not the 2019-2025 Steelers.

The window for perennial contender is opened by a QB, not a head coach. Which is why despite McD/Tomlin and the greatest coach of all time, those teams weren't serious.

The reason the Bills have a reasonable chance to compete for a Super Bowl, every year, since 2020, is because of the guy wearing 17.

Give McD Mac Jones and semi-retired Cam Newton, and he can make some 8-9 win magic and get blown out in the WC round every once in a while for sure. Woo hoo.

Yeah I dont disagree with any of this either.

Since every single bad play or game is Sean's fault, would it be fair to say that when we win a game like yesterday's where the defense dominated an average offense, it is fair to give him credit?

Nope, it's just a bad team.

They have a superior HC still, though, obviously.

Generally it is bad form to insult people you are trying to get to answer your poll. Apologists? Nice.

Before you get all worked up and offended, this was just a response to the "Haters" thread. So everyone lighten up all around.

If you don't believe in Sean, he'll die like Tinker Bell.

They beat the Colts and Pats. They are 6-6.  I guess any team we beat where JA isn’t creating heroics is bad.  That’s a pretty accurate statement for this board.

Ok the framing of the poll is terrible

Look, I am plenty critical of McDermott. I think his welcome is wearing thin. If he's gone because the Pegulas think we need a new approach to get us over the hump I will not shed any tears.

But he would absolutely be snapped up by some team in some capacity if he was fired. He can get an average defense out of practice squad parts.

Do you know who had a reputation for bad time management? Andy Reid. Eagles fans would not shut up about it as his tenure ended and he didn't have the best rep with Alex Smith. But he got the rings so no one cares.

To me, time management is part of it, but the biggest problem I have with him is keeping Josh on a leash. The man is a beast, let him loose! And I realize that Brady calls the plays, but it's clearly the way clappy wants to play football.

I agree to an extent but to frame it as "oh so you're happy that we wrecked a generational talent" is pretty reductive

I did not see that. Sorry about that.

Someone please explain to me why Mike Tomlin is so great?

In 2007, the guy inherited a #1 defense with legendary Dick LeBeau at DC, Big Ben at QB with Bruce Arians as OC. In his 19 years as HC of the Steelers, he won only one SB, and that was in 2008. Tomlin has never had a losing season in those 19 years, and he has a winning percentage of .625. Pittsburgh fans were chanting "fire Tomlin" at their stadium Sunday. Currently, their offense is in the 15s, and the defense is in the 20s, yet it is the most expensive defense in the NFL.

Speaking of long-term head coaches. John Harbaugh, in his 18 years as HC of the Ravens. Now this man inherited a 5-11 lousy team with both the offense, defense in the 20s. However, he did inherit a LBer named Ray Lewis. In 2012, he won an SB with Joe Flacco at QB. No Super Bowls since then, and I'm suspecting it was because all AFC teams were blocked by Tom Brady and the Patriots. In that 2012 season, they beat NE. Baltimore drafted Lamar Jackson the same year as Josh Allen in 2018, and Jackson is a two-time MVP. Harbaugh has a winning percentage of .618%

NOW, the team that has been blocking all AFC teams from advancing to the SB has been the Kansas City Chiefs, save for one year, in which the Bengals got in and lost in 2021. The thing is, at the end of this season, TE Travis Kelce might retire, and HC Andy Reid might retire too. Which would make the Chiefs just another team.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has a winning percentage in his 9 seasons of .657%.

That said, this year's Buffalo Bills are built for cold weather with that #1 in the NFL rushing team. They play Cincy, at NE, at Cleveland, Philly, and the NY Jets. Then, every one of those games will be played in cold weather, and possibly in the snow. Perfect for this team.

If he does win a Super Bowl I'm bumping this thread just for the framing of the question.

tbh that's the difference

i just want a super bowl win. i dont care if we need to fire mcdermott to do it or trade allen for picks, whatever works. just win one and whoever happens to be in charge at the time can stay forever

For every Ben Johnson, you have:

1) Brian Dabol

2) Mike McDaniel

3) Robert Selah

4) Matt Eberflus

5) Brian Callahan

6) Doug Pederson

7) Mike McDaniel

Those are the ones for the top of my head.

The risk is high. It may be worth it, but it is high.

In an effort to win a Superbowl, you can fire McD and hire someone who statistically speaking will be a schlub like 1 to 7 above. Future result:  you're just standing around really angry with a .500 team and holding your _________.

I don't think you can start this by breaking fans down into "apologists" and everyone else.  I appreciate what the man has done, but I do believe he needs to adapt and innovate.  If I'm the owner and I feel a better coach is available for my franchise, I'm considering it.  McDermott isn't a bum, but I don't see a leader that's learning from his own failures.  It's tough to look in the mirror for all of us.  He's paid handsomely to know what's looking back at him and improve if necessary.  Innovate or stagnate. I don't care what the process was yesterday or last year. Improve it or let the next guy try.  He could help his cause by surrounding himself with coordinators that aren't yes men.  Great leaders know the importance of new ideas and relinquishing control in areas where they're not strong.  I doubt McDermott has that in him.  That my vote.
