We, seemingly by design, want undersized penetrating DT's and mobile coverage linebackers.

The opposing offense then looks to keep running the ball because we are undersized and therefore have difficulty stoppin the run.

Then those two undersized groups are always the ones that are the most injured and also the area where we have no adequate level backups.

Our DT rotation is just plain pitfiul - rookies, PS, PED and last legs DQ. At the next level, 8 and 58 just don't pass the eye test.

We are forever going to be drafting 215lb linebackers & 285lb defensive tackles, the numbers on the field will be different but the results will be the same.

I'd be interested to try a 3-4 alignment with Rousseau Walker and Bosa with Fox Thompson Williams and Solomon behind, it may not work but status quo will not either, especially in the postseason.

Right, we are a defense built to force the pass. Having a neutered offense is the complete opposite of complementary football.

The hypothetical indy game is definitely a Shaq Thompson Dorian Williams play a lot of base defense and see if Daniel jones can beat you type game. I think the hypothetical Baltimore game is even scarier than that because you don’t really have that option lol

Why isnt that an option in your opinion?

Morgan Fox. Thar's all I got.

I think that 99% of our run D problems start in the middle of the line. I don't think the DT pairings make sense.  Walker gets doubled and who ever is next to him gets pulled.  The only guys that should be next to Walker are JP and Mathis....unless they stunt someone inside like Fox or Groot.

There's always a huge hole in the middle and Olinemen are getting to that second level CONSTANTLY.  Sure using Dorian to plug that up will work so long as a guard or center doesn't get hands on him.

Our Dline when we used Hoecht is what we should be doing more of and putting 56 inside is stupid. Why not slide Groot in and put Solomon outside. Other than the Chiefs game we're the same ole same ole rush 4 and hope. This is 1000% McD's  hard headed hard head.

Milano and Bernard have established that they are really freaking good with at least average DTs in front of them.

I think DQ and Ed have been who they've always been: Injured yet reliable when they are on the field.

Phillips is a legit practice squad level player.

Larry O and Phil Mathis I'm not totally sure how they are playing.

The rookies look like rookies, with Walker having the occasional splash play. Not sure that Sanders has shown us anything so far.

I think the future looks good at DT with Ed, Walker and Sanders (assuming those guys take a step forward), but that doesn't help us right now.

Still can’t get past the anger stage of trotting out the same soft undersized defense year after year in a place like Buffalo.  We have the absolute perfect QB for Buffalo but also run about the worst defensive system for a cold weather outdoor team

It's basically the same outside rush that teams break for long TDs. Henry, Bijan, Achane and now Tucker.  It seems our LBs and SS can't fill that outside hole reliably and the DE/DT that side can't disrupt on that side. CBs can't get off their WR blocks either.  Collective fail it seems

You can’t have d tackles get manhandled one on one with a 180lb linebacker. Bernard is solid as the come in coverage but his small frame is a huge liability if those interior lineman can’t consistently warrant a double team

That's why they have to be creative. One would think the Chiefs game showed them that.

The Buccaneers and Dolphins frequently utilized pre-snap motion, often catching the defense out of position.

That can be fixed.

Oh it is and we did it some in the last playoff game against them I just meant it’s tougher to do effectively against the ravens offense because they’ve got multiple good pass catching TEs and Lamar is a bit better than Daniel jones is haha

It looks to me like they've had him spending more time chasing TEs and he's not getting as many chances to attack the LOS.

If they're protecting him they need to stop, because he's already protecting himself.

The catch by the RB that he ran down the sideline for a TD it looked like Milano was assigned to him and when the RB ran across the formation Milano looked like he was putting in zero effort to get there. He did like a half jog unless he's really that slow.

There is a time for the dink and dunk ball control offense and there is a time to let it rip and we should look to do both in the same game unless you have a weather related wind/snow/rain game. It was so good to see 25 yards plus passes yesterday.

Yeah, we should have an intimidating D in this climate,,,instead they are soft as can be.  On ESPN Get UP this morning the guys were laughing and clowning on the Bills run defense.  They yucked it up pretty good.  The one guy on set was laughing that he had to google Sean Tucker to find out who he was?!

I will admit though, Baker is a terrible matchup for us.  These QBs that can move around and convert 3rd downs with their legs just kill us.  So we are consistent...we can't stop the conventional runs up the middle, we can't stop the Derrick Henry style downhill running to the edge, and we can't stop QB's from running and converting 3rd downs.

I know its not in McDermotts wheelhouse, but I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this. Does anyone think a Bear front might help us in running situations? I mean its designed to stop the run and pressure

Bosa  Williams             Walker- D.Jones-Rousseau            Thompson

                    Bernard                                                Poyer

Benford.                               Bishop                                                           Hairston

Bills may be dead last in run D.

The run D is so atrocious that Sean may finally have to abandon his conservative mandate on offense that handcuffs Josh in the name of protecting his defense. The only way forward might be to unleash Josh, score fast, and force teams out of their run-heavy scripts.

He broke his leg in 2023.  It was a fibula fracture.

Last year was his biceps.

This year was pectoral.

That's correct it was 2023 but it was a Tibia plateau fracture and may have also had a MCL tear, way worse than a fibula break.
