The Commanders had to make the tough calls because Mathis rarely won individual matchups at the heart of the trenches. More often than not, the 312-pounder was dominated, like on this rep against New York Giants second-year center John Michael Schmitz, highlighted by Nick Falato of SB Nation’s Big Blue View.

John Michael Schmitz adjusted well to the late shift and finished his block with authority on this 5-yard Singletary run.

Great timing to establish a leverage advantage as Phidarian Mathis attempted to work play-side.

Good aggressive finish by the second year center.

Defensive linemen who are this easy for one blocker to handle are the reason for poor run defense. The Commanders needed Mathis to shift the line of scrimmage backwards and occupy double teams, but it rarely happened

does not seem like we have a good answer here.

On the other hand, guys coming off nasty lower leg injuries are not a bad place to mine for value if the player is young enough.  Sometimes, full recovery is not achieved until year 3 after the injury.

I didn’t think he looked good at all.  Him and Ogunjobi were getting blown off the ball quite a bit

Ojunjobi surprised me.  He’s usually more stout.  Buffalo Joe said Larry put up the biggest weights. But tis true.  The tape shows Larry O,  Jordan, Mathis, and Walker getting displaced often

Gonna have to accept that the defense is probably back to the week 1 to 6 levels without those guys. My only hope is that its because McD took over more of the playcalling and actually gave the defense a boost

McDermott is a good enough play caller to work around some of these issues. However, McD is still going to get caught from time to time with the wrong call solely because of available talent. You can manufacture pressure, run stops, etc, but you have to gamble a bit to pull it off.

Part of the problem weeks 1-6 is the rush had to get home quickly because the coverage sucked. Hopefully that is improved.

Perhaps, but our coverage looked better against KC, why?

I feel like alot of these high picks just landed on terrible teams that had terrible culture and not the best coaching, feel like they maybe slack off a bit, team is poor and teammates don't give af and being  young with $$ , never know,  especially coming from Bama, lot of potential

The story of Jordan Phillips.  Former 2nd rounder who goes to a bad Miami organization, turns up to Buffalo and fits with the team for a half decade.

I admittedly didn't analyze him play to play.

But the fact that our Defensive Line played as well as it did against the Chiefs while he was in for 14 snaps and that they chose to sign him over Zion Logue, even though we still had 1 activation left on Mathis and don't have any with Logue is telling.

They must have liked what they saw from him in Practice and when he was in for his elevations against the Patriots and Chiefs.

That said (barring injuries), I have to imagine he moves back to the Practice Squad (if he clears Waivers) in 2-3 weeks when T.J. Sanders is ready to return. Unless we want to carry 6 DT's (which we have done before) or he proves to be more valuable than Jordan Phillips.

So, in other words, Phidarian blows.

In addition to good play by the DL… No Rapp. Bishop finally looked like a football player. Limited reps for Tre and Hairston looks like a player. Hancock and Poyer played well. As other more X and O oriented posters pointed out, Cam Lewis offers more flexibility in disguising coverage, and played in place of a struggling Taron Johnson. And instead of chasing down Mahomes they spied on him and bottled him up.
