Game week thread - Bills at Panthers (Game week preview on pg. 18)

IF they trade for an upgrade at WR, I don’t necessarily see a weakness on Offense.   The only way teams have been able to slow us down would be neutralized.  It’s an easy fix (relatively speaking) if they can find a trade partner.   We have one major weakness to exploit on Offense and that would theoretically take it away.  
 

On Defense, this group could look ALOT different come Playoffs.  Hoecht and Hairston are big additions once they get their footing.  Safety is probably a bandaid position where we hope for solid play if they don’t swing a trade. 
 

If Hairston is good, the entire Defense changes.  Scheme, talent ceiling.. everything.  Honestly, even if he’s serviceable, we probably see a major uptick.

Think the WR/offense take is a bit hyperbolic, in that one personnel upgrade there probably doesn't suddenly catapult the Bills into dynamic deep and intermediate passing success. But that doesn't mean I'm against spending to add there. Have to at least keep trying. 

 

I'm hopeful as well that Hairston can gradually upgrade the Bills secondary, but one has to imagine, especially with the Bills difficulty in maintaining edge contain against the run, that teams will run and throw screens right at Hairston. Wonder what that looks like. Tre has at least been tenacious a number of times playing downhill against such plays.

I just want to come on here and say the lack of confidence some of you have in this team is truly embarrassing. We have the second highest winning % in the NFL since 2018 and many of you are ready to bury these players and coaching staff. We are 4-2 not 1-5. 
 

I had to sit here and read some brilliant mind post how Allen looks older and disinterested this season. What an epic embarrassment some of you are.

A lot of things have to fall into place even if Beane pulls off a trade for a Brian Thomas and a competent safety. First, both players, along with Hairston and the PED twins, would have to work out, which is hardly a given. Second, disappointing players like Bishop and Coleman would have to develop, or at least not continue as glaring liabilities. (It would also be nice if role players like Samuel, Shavers, Ty Johnson, Knox, Codrington, Wishnowsky, and Solomon actually contributed.) Third, the chronically injured Milano and Bernard would have to stay healthy; Shaq Thompson was a nice addition, but he can't do it alone. Fourth, Brady and Babich would need to truly innovate, and I don't mean handoffs to tight ends and slight variations on the soft zone. Finally, McDermott will need to find a way to get past his deer-in-the-headlight act when he faces his mentor in the playoffs. I would recommend a psychologist. 

 

They could do it, in part because all of these things don't need to happen at once. My sense is the team, including the coaches, need a galvanizing win to create momentum and fire. I'm thinking a blowout of KC, for example. Ironically, the Ravens win, which was very much galvanizing, was exactly what the team did NOT need at the time, because it masked the feebleness in the secondary and at wide receiver and sapped the sense of urgency I hope they feel now.

 

But I don't get a sense of urgency from them, do you? I get more of a sense that they think they just need to tweak a few things here and there. Teach Bishop how to tackle, do a better job setting the edge, shade a safety to Tre's side, stick with the run longer, throw even more jump balls to Coleman, that sort of thing. If that's their approach, they will beat the Panthers today, although not without a struggle, and KC will utterly humiliate them, not the other way around. They'll turn in a mediocre season, lose the division to the Patriots, win one playoff game (because Allen), and lose to the Colts in the divisional round. 

 

Let's hope for the urgency.

I just pulled down the Bills roster and it has us at 52 on the active.  Beane playing some sort of roster game?

They actually went into the Falcons game with 52 as well - I’m wondering if they try to get a feel for Milano/Bernard injuries this morning, and will have the active roster spot to sign Ciarlo/Spector this morning, if needed. 

But not too sure on roster / transaction cut off times and if they missed the window already or they can add someone up to the active roster deadline 90 min prior to kickoff.
