Da webster guy Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I feel awful for our punter, this was the third time in a year he's been wrecked and two of them were season ending type injuries. Tasker mentioned today that there are certain snaps where the rushers will go all out and not care if they get a penalty depending on field position, circumstances like score etc. I'm surprised these punters don't take better precautions and wear knee braces and at least tape the crap out of their non-kicking ankle. Would this really affect their kicking ability? It sure would give them better job security..... Quote
gobills1212 Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Why didnt players who were exempt bc they were grandfathered in to the NHLs helmet rule wear helmets? Athletes do what works for them. Maybe a trend will start, but until then its the exception rather than the rule to take extra steps for safety. We have a helmet law while riding motorcycles in NYS. South Carolina doesnt. We think it's nuts to ride without. Guess how most people in SC roll? Hell, even as a kid when the major push for kids to wear bike helmets started to occur in the 90s - most didnt. Future generations did, just as now it seems absurd to play hockey w/out a helmet and most kids wouldn't dream of it. Itd seemingly be an odd rule to implement, but until it does, until peoole have to (like Josh choosing to wear a visor for protection) they wont. It is what it is.. but it deff is. 1 Quote
boater Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I suspect even the best fitted knee or ankle brace degrades from natural foot function. Foot motion as precise as punting is sensitive and requires all natural biomechanics. This isn't like Gronk wearing an elbow brace. He could get away with that because TE doesn't require such fine biomechanics. ...just my amateur Kinesiologist speaking... 1 Quote
dorquemada Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Im not sure there's a brace that would make a difference when a 320lb man collapses the knee of someone who is a buck 80 soaking wet and wearing boots 2 Quote
BigPappy Posted October 1 Posted October 1 My guess would be, due to lack of mobility if he is the last line of defense in the even of a good return and he needs to be able to run full out and make a tackle. Just my thoughts on it anyway. Quote

I remember Mike Foligno was asked why he didn't wear a visor when the NHL made it mandatory (aside from those grandfathered) and he said he tried it but didn't like it. He liked to feel the wind in his face when he was rushing up the ice. Edited October 1 by Fleezoid Quote

Makes me feel even more strongly about a rule banning diving attempts to block punts. Guys shouldn’t be allowed to leave their feet like that, especially when they don’t care about the penalty. Quote
Royale with Cheese Posted October 1 Posted October 1 It's the same reason why NFL players don't wear cups. It's not needed. A sleeve restricts movement. A cup makes it very uncomfortable being tackled and landing on your front side. This is the first time I actually remember a punter getting hurt. I know it's happened before but its so seldom. 1 Quote

Not seldom for Johnston, as the OP mentioned. Season ended last year on opening day. Hauschka was never the same after the Anderson hit, though granted he was a place kicker not a punter. Quote

As a kid, I seem to remember Spike Jones the punter "swallowing his tongue" as a result of getting hit (it really freaked me out) I googled it but could not find it Anyone else have this recollection? https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JoneSp20.htm Quote
BuffaloBillyG Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Punters should wear a full suit of armor. Head out on the field looking like they are about to joust someone. 1 Quote
MJS Posted October 1 Posted October 1 The more restriction to movement, the harder it is to do their job. Quote
T.E. Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Punters should all be required to wear the one-bar facemask. Quote
