I thought so too.

So much for bishop being able to lean on the vet Rapp...

Either Rapps play last year was a one of or the game yesterday was a one off rusty/bad game

It seemed like he was getting washed, over pursuing and hitting the wrong hole on run support to my amateur eyes

With Rapp, I think what we see is what we'll continue to get.  He is smart enough.  He's tough and physical, but is not that athletic and has seriously below average speed.  That makes him an automatic liability in coverage.  The faster and more athletic the receiver, the more Rapp's liability shows up. Still, as a veteran, there are things Bishop can learn from him.  As far as run support is concerned, I think the Bills probably asked their safeties to do more of it against the Ravens than they usually ask of their safeties thanks to Derrick Henry.  That might make him a bit rusty.

Maybe it’s not crazy that Poyer gets activated this year

Hey, you have the situation where Bishop will learn by playing, and the team was fortunate to get a win on Sunday.

However, if Bishop’s learning curve is costing the team wins, I’d consider putting Poyer in.  He may be slow but he knows how to play.   He and Hyde were the QBs of the defense for all those years.

We’ve seen Bishop take bad angles on ball carriers and who knows what was going on with that blitz play.  He was like 15 yards back, the ball was snapped and after a second or so, he blitzes, which left a big hole in the back end.

So, did he then remember he was supposed to blitz or Rapp tell him so then he did?  It was weird.  Collinsworth even pointed it out.

That question was asked on page 1:

I’d love to know what was going on with that play in the third(?) quarter, when Bishop seemingly attempted to blitz Jackson from the Canadian border. It was very odd.

It was then answered 4 times in 3 pages:

It was explained by analysis today. The Bills were disguising their defense and Bishop gave a two-deep look. He was supposed to come to the line of scrimmage, pre-snap. However, the Ravens quick-snapped, catching Bishop in his disguise position. The Ravens were smart and lucky. We are good at disguising our defenses. But, in this case, we got caught.

If I remember correctly, the ball was snapped a little in the quick side. Bishop may have thought he had time to sneak his way up pre snap.

the ravens snapped it rapidly. They caught the Bills in their disguised look.

Yea it was an instant silent snap right when they got to the line…the lions do it some also but I don’t think that’s been thrown at us before

really think Harbaugh should’ve saved that for the playoffs tbh

IMO the idea that Bishop's play was a major factor in our defensive woes against the Ravens is not supported by my eye test.  Sure he got trucked by Henry (join the crowd) but the gaping holes in the D line and the obliteration of our LB's contributed more then anything Bishop did. It seemed like Rapp struggled way more then Bishop, which was understandable given the time he missed.  I also didn't see much from Johnson either.

The fact is that the Ravens offense, particularly with Henry, is probably the worst match up the Bills D faces with it's undersized LB's & Safety's.

I disagree with this strongly.  We USED to be good at disguising but that was in the Hyde & Poyer era.  Those days have long past.

If Poyer plays then someone bring me a broom because there's a whole lot of glass on the floor!

You may be right. Let's let Bishop and Rapp have a few games to see how it plays out. It still is a focused part of McDermott's defensive strategy. We may see it redevelop as the season progresses.

I'm not going to say that Peppers could have solved all our problems at S because we're already in Week 2 and it kinda is what it is at this point.

But I do think having a player of his caliber available at this time and letting him get away to another AFC team was a missed opportunity...

I am supremely confident he would be an upgrade to Hamlin. I am moderately confident he would be an upgrade to Rapp by the 2nd half of the season. I'm actually holding out hope that Bishop improves with time on task...

I think S is a huge issue... I thought, based on the fact that we are already into the season, having a player like Peppers become available was much more than could logically be expected most years...But who knows... Maybe he's dropped off significantly since his 2023 form. We'll see...

The reality is even had we signed peppers, it would have taken months to integrate Him. This team doesn’t do a great job of integrating guys on the fly like this.

Rasul Dougless played in the first game after we acquired him.

Figures.  McBeane are willing to let the safety position continue to suck, because they believe who they pick and who they have is better than what is out there.

Damn this gets old from them.
