I’m curious where folks saw glaring issues.  In run support there isn’t much any safety in the league can do if asked to tackle either Henry or Jackson one on one.  They could have closed better in coverage but it looked to me like we played more man than usual.  And I don’t think I heard Andrew’s name all night, although I’m not sure if the safeties had responsibility for him.

i will freely admit there are many here with more advanced knowledge of defense than me, but sometimes I think as a fan group we reflexively jump on the safeties when the other team has a good day on offense.  Maybe we were spoiled by Hyde and Poyer.

Bro they gave up 40pts in 3 and a half quarters lol. We have issues in the secondary and linebacker. The guys who we gave extensions too this offseason guys like Greg Rousseau, Bernard, Benford didn’t play great. The lack of playmakers we have on defense is very glaring. Thank God for Ed Oliver last night

What are your thoughts on Safety going into Week 2?

Should we keep Bishop on the field and let him grow thru it?

Damar?

Hancock?

Poyer?

Sign Peppers / Simmons?

I’d be fine with Peppers/ Simmons ,if that can’t get done, Hancock and Poyer.

Cover 0.... Replace both Rapp & Bishop with D-lineman.  Tight man on everyone.  Send everyone else.  Every down.  Can't get much worse than McDummy's scheme.  They'll probably score a bunch (how is that any different than the last few years) but we'll put a bunch of hits on the QB (hopefully).  And if they score quick, at least our "defense" will be rested for the next series.

besides that, taking terrible angles all night, and subpar tackling… nothing really!

I’m not expecting the upcoming game against the Jets to be a joke. On the road, division rival, Bills will need to play MUCH better defensively!

Jets are also a physical offensive team. Their offensive line is good, Fields can run the ball, their RB duo is good, and Wilson can make plays on the outside too. Their defense might not be very good but I think their defense is better than they showed against the Steelers. I think it will be a close game late. The Jets in NJ are not an easy out at all.

This is a textbook example of how you stop Henry. Before he gets going. He gets a full head of steam and he’s rarely being brought down. Let alone by a single safety.

Im interested to see the LB play on the all 22.  Henry got through holes untouched if the DL didnt make a play behind the LoS.  Makes me think Milano and Bernard were getting washed (maybe cause DL in front of them wasnt holding up).  Some bad angles taken by Safeties but Henry having a full head of steam makes me think the LBs werent doing enough.

I agree that both Milano and Bernard never plugged the holes. Ravens block well at the second level, but linebackers need to shed those blocks and make the tackle. They are smaller and I expect them to look better as the season wears on.

lamar-Henry-flowers is a very tough match for our unit. I expect Rapp-bishop will look better most days going forward.

They have played so little together--the injuries in pre season really hut yesterday, especially against an offense like the Ravens'.

An interception or two against Fields next week should move them forward, though Fields never looked so good as he did yesterday. He looked like a legitimate starting caliber NFL QB for the first time (that I have seen him play).

Thinking back the best safeties in franchise history were Saimes, Tony Greene, Henry Jones, Leonard Smith, Hyde, Poyer, maybe guys like Jeff Nixon and Kelso a tier or two behind.  Other than Hyde were any converted CBs?

Poyer started as a corner

hyde

 byrd

troy Vincent

I’m not saying all the best S were CBs but it seems like transition that can be made pretty easily.

In real time, Bernard was the worst player on the field most of the game. He's played well in the past so we can hope he turns it around.

DQ is absolutely useless. He's just collecting a paycheck. Carter sucking and then getting injured means we are stuck with DQ. Hopefully in a few weeks Walker is starting.

Something needs to happen, but you know McDemott wont do it. They pushed Bishop stupid hard this pre season, they are going to die on that hill with him.  The announcers said last night, that although Hamlin is slower, he made big tackles on Henry in the playoffs, Something that was missing last night

I saw some business decisions by Safeties last night. Best most can do is slow down 22 until help arrives. Didn't see much of that happening.

Bernard looked really, really bad last night...

I know on one specific huge Henry run I saw it looked to me like he abandoned his gap, turned his back to it allowing him to get washed out an extra 5 yards... At times it looked to me like he was running around with little to no purpose... I'll wait to see... But my initial reaction was that he was terrible...

None of the above.

Rapp is who he is, Bishop needs reps, he won't magically reach his potential sitting on the sideline.

It just wasn't just or safeties last night, the whole defense looked bad and most do vs Ravens. They made it happen when it mattered, though.

If Rapp/Bishop still look bad in Oct, then we have a problem.

Bro, I asked about safeties and you give me word salad.  As I put in my other thread, sometimes the other guy is just better, and their O line dominated the first 3 quarters.
