Now I’m just going out in a limb here but I think every year a player has a year of service, he get his pension added to. Not sure if he has to be on the active roster or not but that could be a reasoning. Hey you come in and mentor, play just in case , well pay you to do it and it will add to your pension when you retire Quote

Until I believe 2/3 years ago....vets couldn't sign to the practice squad in the way they do now. And Hyde did pretty much the same thing last year...just near the end of the regular season. Quote
chris heff Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Phillips and Poyer are being signed to the practice squad to mentor young guys. What’s the problem? 4 2 Quote
gjv Posted August 27 Posted August 27 WOW!!! McDermott must be losing sleep over his secondary. Quote
BuffaloBillyG Posted August 27 Posted August 27 He looked cooked 2 years ago. He was definitely cooked last year. The pro here is that he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the room. If he's more in the role of experience in the room I'm ok with it. If he sees the field we are in trouble. Quote
DrDawkinstein Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Yikes. I can justify and even appreciate bringing Phillips back. But Poyer is cooked. Maybe they're hoping he can be the experienced vet in the room as more a player/coach. If he sees the field, we're screwed. I'll put this in writing: we wont win a single game Poyer starts. Hopefully he'll never have to, but if we get there it wont be pretty. Quote

Highly unlikely he passes Hamlin. He is obviously there for insurance and mentorship as one of their 4 safeties is a raw rookie at this point and their starter is a second year guy still learning. Poyer is not playing unless there is an emergency. Actually a good depth move for them. Quote
ALLinALLEN Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Disgusted by the offseason plan to be at this point Quote

That's No Moon Posted August 27 Posted August 27 (edited) Yup, there's nobody in the league better than Jordan Poyer. They didn't just, again, reach back for comfort. They found the best option. Edited August 27 by That's No Moon Quote

The problem is that they're being signed to play - not mentor young guys - because our head coach refuses to change or adapt in any way possible. 1 2 Quote

And even better I hope Hancock turns into be something special and is the third guy if one of the starters gets hurt. Hancock looks to be very promising. I think the Bills are like me and Hamlin hasnt improved as a player. Team needs a guy who can call the defense if Rapp goes down. At this stage Poyer is the best option available. 1 Quote
SCBills Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Some of these comments for a PS signing are wild. You can’t have high end talent, potential and/or depth at every position. For us.. that position is Safety. Corner is an issue due to injury, but once Hairston comes back, you can’t ask for much more than a top tier slot corner, top tier CB1 and RD1 pick with decent vet depth. The Safety positions succcess is reliant on Cole Bishop becoming a dude. Always has, always will this season. Poyer on the PS and in the room with Bishop helps that. If he has to play, so be it. Generally teams arent excited if they have to play PS guys for an extended period of time.. vet or young guy. 3 1 Quote

Blainorama5 Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Hamlin is no dummy. He knows he's on the hot seat. He also knows Poyer and that relationship can only help him if Bishop really flounders. Quote
NewEra Posted August 27 Posted August 27 (edited) 37 minutes ago, Walking Tall said: Yeah, it’s dumb. How much did Micah Hyde help last season? I saw no uptick in safety play last season after Hyde was signed to the PS. We have coaches. We need talent. We don’t need washed up has-been’s. It sucks saying that because we all loved Poyer. You have no idea how much Micah helped last year. we need talent…..and you expect us to have 16 talented players on the PS that can contribute and play? We’re a perennial Super Bowl contender with very few roster spots up for grabs each year. All 16 spots on the practice squad aren’t strictly to be used for players that may contribute. Some are there possibly play. Some are there to develop with no chance of playing this season. And some are clearly there to mentor. Whether or not some fans think that these mentors help is irrelevant to McD and Beane. Thank god for that. it’s cool man. I’ll sit back and enjoy the show you guys put on Edited August 27 by NewEra 3 1 Quote
