This post encouraged me to watch CJ Spiller highlights. He would’ve been a good complementary player on a decent team. Just wasn’t what we needed at the time, especially from a first round draft choice.

Wrongly utilized more often than not.

Similar to Watkins, a lot of his collegiate dominance was due to quick passes and screens, something you seldom saw him being deployed in.

A lot of great players that never panned out over those years, sadly.

RIP Mr. Wilson but hiring jokers like Nix was a huge part of the problem.

Can’t fault Ralph really, Nix was that older mentality that he probably gravitated to. Double down with the networking he had within the league and it did kind of make sense.

Russ Brandon, at least to me, was the biggest part of Ralph’s problems. Certainly mismanaged a lot of the improvement/building of the teams over his tenure.

With all due respect OP, I think you are grossly underestimating the effect Allen has had on this franchise.  If Cleveland or the Jets take Allen, then McD and Beane are out of a job several years ago.  They did everything to position themselves to get a QB and with Darnold or the wrong Josh both of these fine men would have been given the boot a long time ago.

You might be right but if they couldn’t have traded and got Josh, maybe they end up with Lamar?

Maybe Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones or Dwayne Haskins?

Burrow, Tua or Herbert?

Lawrence, Wilson, Trey Lance or Mac Jones?

Guess we’ll never know… thankfully!

All Praises to Josh!

This was par for the course for 17 years.  One bad decision after another, crappy trades, draft pics, and overall mismanaged.  Russ Brandon was in way over his head.  I’m constantly reminded of well run we are now, and how well constructed we are from top to bottom.  31 teams and fan bases are let down every year.  I want us to win the SB earlier rather than later, and hopefully a couple, but we may go after this run for the next 15 years without one.

My friends were chatting about the “dark ages” and the CJ Spiller draft came up.

Most of you will recall, the team already had Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson on the roster, with about a billion other holes. Despite this, new Bills GM Buddy Nix selected CJ Spiller 9th overall. A few months later, he flipped Marshawn for a fourth round and conditional fifth round pick.

So… I went down a rabbit hole, curious how egregious team building like this could even happen.

And I present to you, Buddy Nix’s introductory Press Conference:

Compare this to our current operation. Yes, Josh has elevated the franchise, but there’s more to Buffalo’s rise than just one man. It’s refreshing to look back and see the difference.

(Before anyone says anything, my apologies for slandering Ralph. We are forever grateful to the man who created the team we all love!)

This was funny to me ,maybe it was his deep southern accent , we sure did come a long way, Ralph seemed to really believe in Nix. I do agree when he said alot of games come down to 2 or 3 crucial plays

In fairness, wasn’t Lynch on his way out of here?

He had some issues with the local law but honestly think we had no real reason to move him off the team.

What you don't miss the "Buddy Nix is asleep at the wheel again" comments for all trades, free agency and the draft?

Not gonna lie, I was excited when we drafted Spiller. We don't seem to do well with Clemson players. Spiller, Watkins, Shaq Lawson.

let us not forget Perry Tuttle... just sayin... lol

Marshawn was definitely on his way out. McD would’ve dumped him even sooner. The problem was taking Spiller when they had Jackson on the roster. Just grab a complimentary back on the second or third day and use the #9 overall on something important. Crazy drafting.

Whenever you have the opportunity to take "a little waterbug" scat back in the first round, you take it.

Maybe Trent, they’re sort of opposites. EJ and JP were definitely not better. Btw, to be clear, I’m in no way arguing that Peterson was ever even capable of playing NFL football just that the rest of the list was also incapable. At least Nate let it rip and made some plays.

I think the facts don't support your view of Peterman vis-a-vis Losman and Edwards.

In 2006, Losman started all 16 games.  He threw for 3051 yards, 62.5% completions, 19 TDs and 14 INTs.  His QB rating was 84.9 and his QBR was 49.5 with Dick Jauron as the HC.   I think he was rated among the top twelve QBs in the NFL.   In his 7 year career, Losman played in 45 games, started 33.  He threw for 6271 yards, 59.2% completions, 33 TDs and 34 INTs.  His highest QB rating was 84.9 (2006) and his highest QBR was 49.5 (2006).

Trent Edwards started 9 games in 2007 and 14 games in 2008.  In 5 seasons, he played in 38 games, started 33.  He threw for 6033 yards, 60.6% completions, 26 TDs and 30 INTs.  His highest QB rating was 85.4 and his QBR was 43.4, both in 2008.  Like Losman, he suffered from being coached by Dick Jauron.

In his entire career, 2017-2023, Peterman has played in 15 games, starting 5.  He threw for 712 yards, 53.1% completions, 4 TDs and 13 INTs.  His highest QB rating was in 2020 was 72.9 (1 game) and his highest QBR was 41.9 in 2022 (3 games).

20 years without a viable QB will

make a franchise look really bad. Just like an MVP at the position will

make it look really good. Hard to be successful in the first situation and hard not to be in the second.

It’s good when a team has a GM & HC that are clever enough to bring in and help coach up that QB into MVP level play, I believe it’s all about the situation a motivated QB is drafted into, it has a lot to do future success, 👍

I don’t think I’m underestimating anything related to Josh. He’s incredible and the primary reason for our recent success.

That can be true while also acknowledging that our front office is significantly upgraded from the Buddy and Russ show. Watch the frickin press conference I linked!

Buddy Nix always picked the shiniest toy in the pile. Idiot! And he taught Whaley to be an idiot!

Marshawn has made it clear that he blames a group of police here for targeting him.

That had to do with that cop's wife saying that Marshawn had stolen a $20 from her. He wanted out, badly, and not because of the team situation.

I remembered something of this ilk being an issue. So weird

I would certainly agree that this iteration has provided an environment to be successful where previous versions have not. I always thought JP could have done something in the right situation. He's since gone into coaching and been applauded for his knowledge of the game and maturity. Pretty talented player as well.

Neither do the Jags...at least ours were cheaper 🤣
