Another Fan Posted Tuesday at 04:57 PM Posted Tuesday at 04:57 PM All I remember is it was in the basement of a Presbyterian church and I didnt like being there much. But perhaps it taught me my first lesson in open mindedness. The only other thing I remember that year. I forgot if it was a class mom or teacher but she made me some celery sticks which I thought was nice. Problem was I just didn’t like them at all. And didn’t eat them. But today it’s one of my favorite healthy snacks Quote
Johnny Hammersticks Posted Tuesday at 05:21 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:21 PM I do. I remember it was in the gymnasium of a catholic school. They made us take two naps during the day on gym mats with no pillows or blankets and I hated it. I also remember when one of the young teachers got fired. She was singing the Def Leppard song “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” but in front of the kids sang “Pour some s@&t over my head.” Was gone the next day. 😂 2 Quote
Augie Posted Tuesday at 05:23 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:23 PM This is funny timing. Today was the first day of our granddaughter’s preschool and our DIL just left here. My wife was babysitting the infant while mom broke the soon to be 3 year old into the new routine. I wonder what, if anything, she will recall from all of this. I don’t know if we had preschool back then, but I clearly remember kindergarten. I had a red mat during nap time, how to flush that crazy toilet was a mystery to me, and the girl who got frustrated trying to tie her shoes would throw them at the teacher. She got to go back to the same room the next year. 1 Quote
DrDawkinstein Posted Tuesday at 05:30 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:30 PM I remember a lot. Went to Michael Baker Daycare over in OP. I can remember the first day and crying as my mom left and the teacher holding me. I remember a LOT of different events we had there. Even a bunch of little, one-off experiences during play time or nap time. Good times! 9 minutes ago, Johnny Hammersticks said: I do. I remember it was in the gymnasium of a catholic school. I wasnt a napper and I was always getting "in trouble" for not sleeping. We just had these little mats too. Hated all of it. 1 Quote

Mark Vader Posted Tuesday at 06:39 PM Posted Tuesday at 06:39 PM Vague memories, but I do remember how nice the teacher was, and the room I was in was very nice. Quote
BuffaloBud Posted Tuesday at 06:47 PM Posted Tuesday at 06:47 PM (edited) No pre-school here. Guess that ages me quite a bit then. Edited Tuesday at 06:48 PM by BuffaloBud Quote
Ridgewaycynic2013 Posted Tuesday at 07:20 PM Posted Tuesday at 07:20 PM (edited) Closest I had to preschool was the half day kindergarten in the Buffalo Public Schools. At least with the afternoon session, I could watch the morning reruns of the CBS comedies, then hide between the sofa back and wall in an attempt to miss school. Never worked. 🙁 I recall the teacher for kindergarten who started the year went off early on some sort of medical leave. We had a constant churn of various teachers, some were rigid taskmasters, some handed us crayons and paper and left it at that. First grade straightened out the situation, and I still recall 60 years later the homeroom teachers, and once we hit 6th grade, the various teachers for the core subjects. Bray Wyatt Posted Tuesday at 07:34 PM Posted Tuesday at 07:34 PM Things I remember: My teachers name was Mrs. Rubenstein, but this one kid kept calling her Mrs. Frankenstein It was Gerber, until my last year and it changed to Childtime. We had a big wooden playground outside, had to have shoes on to play. There were fields surrounding the fenced in play ground and I would pick up snails and put them in my jean jacket pocket. I would not tell my Mom and she would put it in the wash, and she would find them after. A girl kissed me when we were waiting for our parents to pick us up, and I started crying. 2 Quote
LeviF Posted Tuesday at 08:20 PM Posted Tuesday at 08:20 PM Half day in the basement of the church around the corner. Not affiliated I don't think, just used the space. The two full time teachers were older ladies who were really sweet. Thin green carpet, a kitchen right off the main space. I remember the alphabet poster that ran across half the room and playing "London Bridge." It's odd because after kindergarten I don't remember much until about fifth grade. But plenty of memories of preschool. Quote
ExiledInIllinois Posted Tuesday at 08:41 PM Posted Tuesday at 08:41 PM No pre-school. I guess that's a thing that happened when families went to two incomes. My one sister is 4 years younger... She went to pre-school in mid-1970s when my mother went back to work outside of home. 1 Quote

Wacka Posted Tuesday at 09:44 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:44 PM (edited) They didn't have preschool back in 1962.I remembered that a kid (remember his name) dropped a wooden totytrain on my head in Kindergarten and it cut my scalp a little. They took me to a Dr. in the neighborhood and he sewed me up (probably a few stitches). That was also the year I had my tonsils out. Edited Wednesday at 03:28 AM by Wacka 1 Quote

RichStadiumGuy Posted Wednesday at 01:39 PM Posted Wednesday at 01:39 PM To the best of my knowledge "pre-school" didn't exist back in 1956? However... I have a black & white photo that my mother took of me on my first day of kindergarten in 1957 and I remember exactly zero of anything that went down. My earliest recollections are from the 1959 era around the time my father bought his first brand new Buick. Man... those fins were a sight to behold for a little kid! Quote
Wacka Posted Wednesday at 06:39 PM Posted Wednesday at 06:39 PM (edited) I missed the bus the first day of kindergraden . My parents didn't get me to the road in time. Dad worked nights and he was still up, so he drove me the couple miles to school. Down on the main street there was an old "amusement park" that had closed maybe 8 or so years earlier and awas overgrown and had the ruins of several rides among the weeds. Those got removed maybe 5 years later, but at the corner to that road and another main road was a 2-3 story "Liberty Park Hotel" that was being torn down that very same day. Maybe had 10-15 rooms. Since then it has had a gas station o it. There is and apartment development with the name Liberty Park Apartments about a quarter mile down the road. People who live there have no idea why it has that name. Edited Wednesday at 06:40 PM by Wacka Quote
SoTier Posted Wednesday at 09:04 PM Posted Wednesday at 09:04 PM They didn't have pre-school in the early 1950s. I guess that some rich little kids went to nursery school, but middle class kids mostly went straight to kindergarten ... except for those kids whose parents didn't send them to school until first grade. Fr. Jerk Posted yesterday at 02:51 PM Posted yesterday at 02:51 PM I remember a classmate started playing with a toy I brought in without my permission. I laid the smack on that fool, ya dig? Quote
