AlCowlingsTaxiService Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Honorable mention for Hank Bullough- he delivered one of the classic lines in the annals of Bills history “ they took the sails out of our winds” Quote
uticaclub Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Saban, Levy, McDermott…. Pete Caroll was an assistant in Buffalo once. Rex’s teeth would look very nice on the side of a mountain The 4th one is elusive. 2 Quote

Rex’s teeth would look very nice on the side of a mountain The 4th one is elusive. The Bills were a mess in the mid to late 70's. Knox turned it around and they had some good teams in the early 80's. I still say if they would have held on against SD in the 1980 divisional round they would have gone to the Super Bowl. If they had won the AFCCG would have been Oakland at Buffalo. The Bills dominated the Raiders at home that season 24-7. The only Raiders score came off a pick 6. Chuck Knox is definitely on the Bills mount Rushmore of Bills head coaches IMHO Edited July 18 by Gregg 1 1 2 Quote

ticketssince61 Posted July 19 Posted July 19 Those are the only four: there is not a even a close 4th except Maybe Wade Phillips - who actually had a 60% winning percentage and got us to the playoffs 2 out of 3 years I would rank them 1. Saban - because 2x AFL championship 2. Levy - 4 Super Bowls 3. McD - obvious reasons 4. Knox - As someone else mentioned, he turned us around and got us to the playoffs a few times Trivia Question - what Bills head coach never won a game with the Bills? 1 Quote

Harvey Johnson went 1 and 10 and 1 in 1968 yet we brought him back in 1971 and he did even worse 1-13 What were they thinking! He was hired as a replacement for Joel Collier who was fired 2 games in after losing to the raiders 48 to 6 ( i remember listening to the game as a kid in chestnut ridge park) Jim Ringo (a HOF center with the Packers) has to be honorable mention of the "rushless" as he quit at HALFTIME of a game as the Bills were losing at the half 42 to 3 to the 2nd year EXPANSION The team had to beg him to finish out the game For all of those who dislike McDermott, he may not be perfect, but you can see how hard it is to get a good coach For all of those who dislike McDermott, he may not be perfect, but you can see how hard it is to get a good coach Quote

When he quit due to Ralph being Ralph, I said I'd write a letter to Ralph saying I'm done with this team because he clearly didn't care about winning. No letter but I was done with the team... until the beginning of the next season. 1 1 Quote

On the subject of Chuck Knox, he is arguably the greatest coach not in the NFL Hall of Fame. His 186 wins places him 11th on the All-Time list. He took 3 teams with losing records (Rams, Bills, and Seahawks) and turned them all into strong playoff teams. In 22 seasons as an NFL Head Coach his teams made the playoffs 11 times. In the Super Bowl era there are 5 coaches in the Hall of Fame who never won a Super Bowl. They are: Don Coryell Marv Levy George Allen Bud Grant Sid Gillman On the other hand, Chuck Knox is in the club with Marty Schottenheimer and Dan Reeves as guys who arguably deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
