Bengals bungling things up - new rookie contract clause

I'd be embarrassed if I was a Bengals fan.

But the truth is this: Even though there's a salary cap that's the same for all 32 teams, the playing ground is not TRULY level for all teams. Teams with cash-rich owners have an inherent advantage over teams without them. Teams like the Bills have an advantage over teams like the Bengals, who admittedly don't make things better for themselves by pulling bush league stunts like this with players.

I expect the NFL to find a way to address this sooner rather than later. The creative circumvention of the salary cap using void years, conversions to signing bonuses, etc, has caused the league to take notice, and I think changes will be on the way in the years to come.

It beats not being there at all. The Bills have a chance when they are in the playoffs. The Bengals do not when they are sitting at home with most of their cap space going to just a few guys. 

 

I would have a hard time being a fan of any NFL team from Ohio.

I’m not saying I follow this closely, but when teams have been affected by intolerable player behavior and players were cut, teams have sued to get a portion of their guaranteed money back. I don’t know what the meaning of default is in this scenario. If I knew that, it would clear things up.

Rookies get paid so little now compared to what they used to. The only upside they have under the rookie wage scale is a gaurenteed 4 years of money.

The Bills have been to two AFC Championship games and have the most playoff wins since 2020 besides Kansas City.

 

The Bengals, meanwhile, have only made the playoffs twice. They went far those two years, but they don't have a superbowl win either. They had a short window and that window appears to be closed, now, even with one of the best QB's in the NFL.

They definitely didn't get smoked in that super bowl. A pretty bad defensive holding call tilted it late

If any window appears to be closing, it’s certainly not Cincinnati’s. 
 

Two common denominators in the Josh era:  Josh and McDermott. 
 

Zero Super Bowl appearances.

No, they’re going into year 6 with arguably a top 4 QB and outside of 2 WR and an older DE they have nothing. Honestly, what do they have that’s above Buffalo outside of that-their defense IS laughable and so is their offensive line

You can absolutely make fun of them, they have refused to address their Oline, and as a result it has ruined two of their prime Burrow seasons.

 

now their lack of respect to their players has lost them Hendrickson, and their first round pick doesn’t want to play there unless they offer even just a normal contract.

 

if you ask any NFL fan which team has been the best team of the past 5 years in the AFC behind the chiefs… lemme give you a hint, no one is saying the Bengals

That's because they failed to do what the Eagles and Chiefs have been able to do.  Build their defense through the draft.  The year after Burrows and Chase were drafted they spent 9 of their 13 Round 1 through 3 picks on defense.  None of them worked out the way they hoped they would and only three were starting for them at the end of last year.  Look at teams like the Eagles and Chiefs who employed a similar strategy with much better results.  I guess that's what happens when you cheap out on your scouting staff.
