The least he can do right now is fire/demote Babich and take over the defense. They looked much better in the second half.

McD was holding a play call sheet in the 2nd half.

I mentioned it in the GDT.

Not sure Benford is where you want to hang McDermott's hat right now

Realistically anybody.. if he has 4 defensive players in the draft.. he usually develops three .. like most teams don't develop fifth or sixth round picks into starters McDermott does

He's not the judge jury and executioner like Bill belichick

I think the quality of players being brought in by the GM is way more in question to how they are developed

Sean McDermott developed Christian Benford into the point where we just paid him $70 million dollars but that's on the general manager

There's been regression from just about everybody on defense this year. Benford, Bernard, Rousseau, Rapp, Taron. All of them are playing worse than last year. Even White is worse than he was last year and that's really saying something. You're just not going to convince anybody on here that McDermott is some guru who gets the very best out of his players. Frankly I think the opposite has been true, the players on defense are not being put in position to succeed within their own skill sets. There is just no excuse for giving up over 300 yards in the 1st half alone. Only one Falcons WR caught a pass tonight. You'll never guess who? Letting their one guy beat you repeatedly is an abysmal failure of game planning and coaching.

By the way I agree that Beane failed in his attempts to add talent to that side of the ball, but he got the archetypes that McDermott asked for so McDermott is responsible for using them. It was entirely predictable that all the investments in the world would make no difference to the defense's performance because the coaching on that side of the ball has grown stale and easy to expose.

Maybe most of those guys have been overrated by the fan base recently

And at the NFL level been used past their prime and not been given good enough replacement

Johnson is like in his 8th year as a starting slot corner.. it doesn't matter his age his physicality he's basically done.. he's way way closer to the end than the beginning .. a safety change is what will prolong his career for 3 years

And that was a fourth round pick he developed into a top slot corner

Rapp certainly isn't worse than he was with the Rams.. McDermott has made everything he could out of this crazy-headed player who was once our best safety last year.. it doesn't matter if it's saying much or not at all but he was

I get it we all would have liked him to turn Greg Russo into Julius peppers but that's not easy to do

But the discount the top five and top 10 defenses he put out here and think he just completely lost it when he developed that.. maybe he's really not getting the dogs

They always said it's that Jimmy's and Joe's at the end of the day

To his credit, the defense seemed better when McD started calling plays in the 2nd half.

But yeah, the problem is pretty clearly a scheme and coaching issue. You don’t let a team get 300+ yards of production in the first half just because the players aren’t up to par.

He put out top 5 and 10 defenses (in the regular season anyways) when Leslie Frazier was his DC. His own turn at DC was a disaster and Babich's turn has been even worse. I've begun to suspect all the talk about McDermott being a DB guru was Frazier's handiwork as well. Since he left just about nothing has gone right on that side of the ball.

Or the safeties we developed who played in our system for 7 years got old and left.. our All pro corner got older and injured and left.. our really good slot corner is now at the end of his career for a slot corner.. and we developed a six-round pick into our best corner

We also let a former captain and middle linebacker walk who ended up getting like a 70 million deal in Chicago.. and replace them with a linebacker that this entire board said was terrible and then he turned into our captain

That's a lot of development

We need to cut bait of all the old people which stings.. and they need to get younger... Maxwell is absolutely going to step in and be our best corner when he plays

Atlanta's offense has been the worst in the league passing the ball 10+ yards downfield this year. I knew Bijan was going to make some plays and you can live with that. It's just appalling that they had exactly one WR to worry about and they just let him find soft spots in zone or end up in 1v1 coverage all night long. It could have been a lot worse too. We got lucky London stepped out of bounds at the end of the 1st half and Penix missed a few throws where he was wide open. I just don't understand how you let the only pass catcher worth mentioning do that to you. Just like Diggs last week. Forget genius defensive coaching, we are failing at the basics.

Sorry if I am bring up something that's in this thread already....or recently brought up elsewhere....but I think most of you know the stat that a HC and QB that have been together for more than 5 years and didn't get a Super Bowl win in those first 5 years, have never gone on to get one.

McDermott deserves a TON of credit for being the HC that oversaw the development of Josh Allen.  That was a big time high risk, high reward pick and he has seen it through to where Allen is an elite talent.  ....but he's the wrong guy to take the Bills the rest of the way on the journey to a title.  That's fine.  It's also fine to recognize that is the case.  The bills need a Mike Shannahan/John Elway type of combo.  Dan Reeves oversaw Elways development into a star, but he was the wrong coach to build and coach that team to a title.  Reeves was a very good coach, but his skill set wasn't a match for a fully developed Elway.  Same with McDermott.

The Bills need to get someone like Kevin Stefanski......yes, he is Clevelands coach....call and make that trade.  Or maybe Mike McCarthy....

.....He wouldn't be my first choice....but he's spent his entire career around elite QB's.  There are worse options.  I'd still call Cleveland and see what they'd want for Stefanski.  Mike Shanahan, hadn't won anything of substance when was hired by Denver.....he'd been a good HC for the Raiders for a stint...

Yeah, he probably singlehandedly cost Aaron Rodgers three Super Bowls.

You want to see him attempt to double that jackassery with Allen?

Actually you probably do, you no-good, rotten, sneaky sonofabltch!

Interesting.  At this point you have to move on from Babbich?  Right.

We did hold them to 3 pts in the 2nd half and if Shaq picks that ball it probably would've been 0.  Babich is likely gone and Sean will call the defense the rest of the season.

Seriously, is there any coaching even being done on defense??  Its a ***** show.  Maybe the players hate McDermott and have quit on him.

I was at the game.  Atlanta had guys open all over the field.  Our DB's have forgotten how to cover, or have no idea where they are supposed to be.  Bishop and Rapp and Tre are bad and Benford is regressing.  Penix was meh tonite.  I told my step son who is a Falcons fan, that I would give him a C+  He missed open receivers, plays with not a lot of confidence and makes questionable decisions with the ball.  A good QB was putting up 400 yards tonite.   We are that bad on the back end against the pass.  But we still had a chance to win.  Unfortunately, the offense had less than nothing after the TD to Ray Davis.

This is a football team heading in a bad direction.  These next two weeks are very telling.  We play an improving Panthers team, and a once again very very good Chiefs team coming out of the bye.  4-4 and its time to clean house of the McBeane stench that has permeated into this once very proud and ascending franchise.

Hopefully there is a big time awakening this week and next from top to bottom in the entire organization.  The team tonite was embarrassing to watch.  And that should never happen.

It might be too much coaching.

What did we do this off season?  Bring in like 3 special assistants to the defense?

I do think the D line has been better by a lot from last year.  Walker and Bosa are significant upgrades.  And Oliver was good again tonight.

LBs and DBs.  Absolutely horrific.

Our defense played well in the 2nd half. If that was due to McD calling the plays, then the solution is clear...
