it is refreshing to read a move that has  zero to no controversy attached. Overall POSITIVE move.  Good for him! and hopefully we fans too moving forward.

Bills need a bigger back like Ravens use.  Maybe they can get one for PS to get ready.

I'm hoping they add Bralen Allen from Wisconsin with one of the 5th Rounders if he's still there.

No.

Cook needs a breather at times. He's not the biggest guy in the world.

When those breathers were needed, Johnson showed more as a runner and receiver from midseason onward than Murray did. You give the touches to the guy that earns them. Johnson earned them.

Johnson posted 4.4 yards per carry.
Cook 4.7.
Murray 3.8.

That means that after Cook, the next most productive guy when toting the rock was Ty Johnson. So why give those carries to Murray?

I want and expect the Bills to draft or sign an RB2. But when your RB3 can run it for 4.4 yards a pop, catch the ball, and provide a change of pace for your RB1 when needed while ALSO playing special teams -- that's a useful player. That's why I'm glad they re-signed Johnson.

Ask McD and Brady.  They rarely used Johnson--even as a Breather for Cook (going with Murray instead).  Or ask the Jets--they dumped him the season before (at a whopping 5.3 YPC!!).  Or Detroit....

Johnson's yards per carry are from samples sizes so small that they are mostly meaningless.  The fact that he averaged 22 inches more per carry than Murray doesn't move the needle.  Clearly it didn't warrant more touches, and it hasn't throughout his career.

This guy has been on a few bad RB rosters---and he still couldn't separate himself from the pack in the RB room.

I get it--he's a cheap guy to send in for 3 plays a game to give Cook a rest.  That's all he's ever been.

Right. He's an RB3 likely making vet minimum. If that was your argument -- "he's no more than an RB3", then you should have just said that from the jump instead of talking about Latavius Murray and Devin Singletary and Zack Moss and who deserved touches in the offense.

If your point is "he's an RB3, he's nothing too special", then I agree. I think he's a pretty GOOD RB3, which is why I like the cheap re-signing, but he's an RB3 nonetheless. So if that's all you're saying, then we're on the same page. We could've saved ourselves some effort here.

And how will they going to get so much better with the cap situation they are in! What would you have done to change all this without being deeper in the hole. They are getting somewhat younger on the o-line. Our 2nd or 3rd RB will be better and younger then Murray.  Our second WR, which should be a rookie will be just as good as Davis but also dont sleep on our rookie , or Shorter or Hollis.

They lost journeyman along the Dline and will add thru the draft and cheaper contracts in FA. The LB will be better with Milano hopefully healthy for the whole year. The D Backs will be the same and we just need to add a safety(one in FA and one in the draft)

I don't dislike Ty, but did we really need to prioritize a backup RB at this stage in FA, or a backup S (Cam Lewis),  or a backup LB/ST (Morrow), or a ST gunner/backup WR (Mack Hollins), or a backup QB (Trubisky) or a FB/backup TE (Morris), or a Punter?  We have massive holes in the starting lineup and need to improve our roster with significant talent to keep up/pass the Chiefs, Ravens, etc...  yet we're focused on backups. None of these guys are impact players and they can all just as easily be replaced with rookies or signings later closer to training camp.  Take their collective salaries (Hollins, $3M, Lewis $4m, Trubisky ..., etc.) and sign a real impact player, before they're all gone.

This is a ridiculous statement this early into FA and without seeing what we do in the draft.

Is there some FA RB you'd rather have that'll be around the same price as Johnson?  I can't think of any.

It's not about the RB per se. Its about prioritizing signing backups when we need starters in key areas.

Meanwhile the best FAs are quickly disappearing.

lol name 1

he's on his 3rd team in 5 seasons and has never had 275 yards rushing.  In Detroit, he couldn't beat out Bo Scarborough for the RB@.  In NYJ, he couldn't beat out Tevin Coleman or Zonovan Knight---and those were bad rushing Offenses, the bar was low.

Dallas cowboys next question

I was mainly responding to the claim that this guy could be a RB! on other teams, which is absurd.

As a (previous) RB on bad running teams, he couldn't get past bad RB2's. As the Bills R3, he's a warm body for a few touches a game. Singletary and Moss were mentioned in a different context.

I will take elite offensive line versus spending any significant dollars at the RB position. If they don't come cheap then draft and replace. Good offensive line will make an average back look decent.

running the ball, he's a JAG. 100%. but I always had a good feeling when they threw the ball his way. Safe, dependable, runs hard, etc. If you could combine his intangibles with Cook's talent, we'd have a perfect back.

and i don't dislike cook. but he's impossible to trust.

edit: just looked at his numbers, and maybe im remembering stuff that's not real. 7 catches in the regular season. 1 post season. 1 fumble.
