Comp Picks

Recommended Posts

So I know the Bills are expected to get a comp pick for Edmunds in the 3rd.

I see there are comp picks in all the other lower rounds too at the way down to the 7th.  Wondering what does a team have to lose to only get say a 6th or 7th round comp pick?  The water boy?? Chain gang?

And I assume the Bills have no shot at any of those??

No, it’s set. The Bills are getting a 3rd for Edmunds but that’s it.

It's based on the salary that the player signs for. Low salary = late pick.

The pick is not per the individual player lost to FA, it's a composite of all the new contracts of all the FA you lost vs all the FA you signed.

The Bills have hosed themselves out of comp picks a few times by signing marginal FAs when they could've netted a 4th or 5th.

Don't think this is accurate.

You need to have a net loss of players to be eligible for a comp pick. That is correct. And this is how Beane screwed up getting a 3rd round pick for Gilmore. All he had to do was dump a backup WR and marginal starting OG.

However the round at which the pick is awarded is based on the individual contract the player signed with his new team.

The comp pick formula should allow for qualifying offers like baseball does as when it comes to draft picks  I see no problem giving an end of the second round pick for the loss of Edmunds who was the leader of the bills defense for 5 years but the nfl only starts comp picks in the third round.
Of course depending on what Gabe Davis signs for Bills should get another 3round pick for him next year.

You have to have a net loss of qualifying contracts. Non-qualifying very low value contracts don't count. Cincy this year are an example. They were net equal but two of their gains were such low value they don't count in the cancellation process. So they will gain two comps.

The Bills should be in position for comp picks next year too with Davis, Dodson, AJE and Floyd all potential guys to get decent deals.

The NFL comp pick formula is very dumb in my opinion but the Bills at the very least got the third for Edmonds

It may be dumb but it's one of the few things that helps successful teams maintain their success.  Everything else (draft order, schedule format, rookie wage scale) helps poorly run teams.

Also the formula of how many qualified players you lose versus how many qualified players you sign.

has nothing to do with round of the compensatory pick.

Wait until next year.  With our expected turnover, and not much to spend cap wise, we could be looking at 3-4 comp picks in 25' including a 3rd rounder.  It depends on the contract Gabe gets.

So, with the Bates trade, we have 11 picks now, right? Beane should be able to shuffle a few of them for earlier picks, possibly an additional 2nd.

Looks like 143 for Bates so add that. Just doing the math in my head, if I add up all 9 of our picks from the 3rd round and beyond I get 284 points, which is equivalent to pick 62. Obviously that’s not going to happen, but I’m hopeful we can use some of the late round picks to maneuver.

OK so it's more about the salary than what round the player the team lost was drafted in?

The round drafted in or if they were originally an UDFA is completely irrelevant

We need to reload the roster with young players..We should use all those picks to draft players and stay away from the 1st week of FA.
