There could be a couple rational reasons why cover players have bad years... 1. Hubris. It makes a player feel like the biggest superstar in the game. Remember, these are people in their 20s, not adults with a long period of maturity as a frame of reference. When Josh is saying crap like "I'm the best athlete in the world!" on video, you know his head has gotten bigger (and not because it's filled with more football study). 2. Other teams are more motivated to take you down. I think psychology is huge in sports and I don't think being on the Madden cover is a good thing. It went to Josh's head and he thinks he can just physically overcome his mental issues. Josh went Hollywood and the first year he gets all the endorsements and Hollywood GF, his play turns to sh!t. I’m only at the first 6 but none had a career ender. edit- found maybe 1 but the player was old at the time and could have just been age catching up.
