Downtown Vegas suggestions

Cover your drinks and watch your back on Fremont.  The California Hotel and Casino (the Cal) caters to Hawaiians. I've stayed there a few times with my Hawaiian friends. I like the food and the people there.  Nothing special but an interesting place because of the Hawaiian crowd. Fremont has a zip line and music and light show that I enjoyed.  The roof of the Strat is cool and not too far.

Going in late February. Staying downtown. Any good suggestions on food or attractions, besides the Fremont Street Experience?

My suggestion.....get in a cab, and have it drop you off on the strip....preferably in front of the Bellagio!😀

Thanks. I'm attending a 3-day event that is centered around downtown, hence the call for suggestions.

Find out if the hotel you're interested in is under construction. We stayed at Harrahs not knowing it was under the jackhammer. It was a mediocre experience with poor customer service.

Stayed at Aria before. Nice rooms but costlier.

If I were to return I'd opt for a hotel along the monorail line to save on cab fare

Whatever you do, do NOT stay at the Tropicana!!!!! I stayed there last year and it was actually my first trip to Vegas. I unknowingly went on draft week (you know, the one in which we took Elam). I chose The Trop because it is owned by Hilton. I'm an honors member and I have lots of points and never had one bad experience at any Hilton owned place.

Well, the hotel was filthy, and the air conditioner was blowing hot air. We complained and a guy came up and changed the filter and left black s%$t all over the carpet. When I got home I complained so much that they gave me 50,000 points. Other than breakfast, the food sucked.

Now the good news. I liked the MGM and New York, New York (same owner). There is a Gallagher's Steak House in NY, NY. It was the best Rib Eye I have ever tasted. It is one of the oldest steak houses in NYC and it is superb. I told the manager how much I enjoyed it and he gave us each a complimentary piece of GREAT cheese cake.

One night we wanted Mexican. A cab driver in front of the hotel recommended a place and it was very good. It is called Bonito Michoacan, located on 3715 South Decatur Blvd., off the strip but not in a bad neighborhood. The food was very good and the portions were huge. I ordered 1 beer and it was so big that I couldn't finish it. I would go back there if I ever return to Vegas.

Hth.

Stayed at the Cosmopolitan.  Very nice hotel.  Took a tour of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon via helicopter.  Incredible.  Helicopter Tour.  Saw a concert at the Golden Nugget which is a little run down and very smokey.  I would highly recommend Tremont Street though.  Marijuana seemed to be everywhere if you go that way.  A lot of homeless which was a little sad.

I’ll admit the bold hurt, but I’m keeping my chin up.

Our last trip to Vegas was the year before Covid, I think. The wife was working but we went early to stay with some close friends. They wanted us to stay at their place for a few days before our “Strip Adventure” began. WOW!  The locals, especially those with far more money than I will ever see, have an TOTALLY different experience. They took us to the best restaurants on and off the Strip, to their (multiple) private clubs, their favorite parks, etc. They have a beautiful life and I’m happy for them.

I can’t say that I loved the idea of desert life, but the view across their pool and the golf course of the Strip lit up and night was enough to sway me a bit.

Funny side-note: They moved from FL to LA to be close to their grandchild. They moved from LA to Vegas to be farther from their daughter-in-law.  😂

I agree on the cosmopolitan. Great hotel not sure how much you're looking to spend but their suites are very nice and have a balcony that overlooks the Bellagio water show. inside of the cosmopolitan, there is a pizzeria called secret pizza, which is pretty dang good, they also have a speakeasy inside the hotel, and a beautiful chandelier Bar. There is a speakeasy in old Vegas on Fremont street which was tons of fun called the laundry room, but you'll have to make reservations in advance. And they have some interesting 1920s prohibition rules, and they can create cocktails based off your palate, which is fun. As far as food, there are tons of great options I love SW steakhouse, sit outside, and you get yourself a free show that isn't too shabby. Piero's For some fantastic Italian food, it's a bit off the strip, but honestly worth the ride. This restaurant was shown in the movie Casino. I would do a nightcap at the Skyfall lounge located at Mandalay Bay.

we went to the Eiffel tower for a nice brunch, they also have a graveyard of old signs somewhere in Vegas I don't really recall where, I believe it's called the neon museum. I've been a handful of times in my life and I absolutely love it. If there's anything I can do please let me know.

We went a few years ago and stayed with old friends for a few days before we went to the Aria and my wife went to work an event. Our friends had a big surprise for us, which turned out to be the helicopter trip into the Grand Canyon. It was a very kind and generous gift. My wife and I shared a glance and never mentioned that we had done the helicopter trip when we were out a few years earlier. It is a great excursion, and it’s ironic that I type this while watching The Bucket List.

I really want to do a helicopter tour of the canyon. I’ve been on the ground a bunch of times but never flown. Had a reservation for Jan 27th 2020 with my ex. The Kobe accident happened the day before and she refused to go on the trip. I should have just went by myself.

That is some lousy timing! We had a trip planned with our kids to NYC in November after 9/11. Nobody knew anything then. It’s a serious “what do we do moment???”, but we went. That’s months later, so maybe the shock was starting to wear off. But that was a very spooky experience. Things were still a complete mess and…..well, hard to describe.  In our bedroom the wife has a framed poem our son wrote a few years later for a creative writing class. Along with the poem is a photo of the young boys standing with the wreckage behind them. Very emotional.

Anyway, I highly recommend the helicopter ride. It’s hard to fathom when the pilot points to a dark line in the canyon wall and says we are going to fly into it. Excuse me?!?!  As you get closer and closer you see it’s actually like a giant cove in the air. Both times my brain had a hard time comprehending how vast it is. The first time we did it I worried about the cost. I don’t remember how much it was, but I remember the experience.
