With McDermott, you can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good

Same with Beane.  We have a coach & GM who have turned this team around COMPLETELY from the drought years.  They've brought in the right players, coached them up, gameplanned well and changed the culture.

The Buffalo Bills are now one of the best teams in the league, and have a window that's open for miles.

I don't know what happened in the last 13 seconds of that game, but clearly, coaching errors were made.  From the kickoff, to the soft coverage, to singling on Kelce, to rushing 4.  But I saw those kinds of coaching mistakes all weekend, in all 4 games.  McVeigh is generally considered one of the best up & comers, and that game was almost a comedy of errors while the Rams gave up a 20 point lead and almost let that slip away. And look at Reid, who we all agree is one of the top coaches in the league now - Philly fans celebrated when he moved on.  He had years of futility in big games there, and was particularly known for terrible clock management.

We have a good one.  McD may never be elite, but there are so few elite coaches out there.  He's very good, and you stick w/ that.  He'll keep learning, and keep getting better in these situations.

Never ever through away the baby with the bath water. That was a huge mistake by the Eagles to part ways with Andy Reid. Let's not make that mistake.

Reid fired McDermott.  Worked out great for him. McDermott became his playoff doormat.

I don't want to fire McDermott.   I'm pretty fed up with Frazier though.

That being said, McDermott deserves the heat he's getting.  He literally lost us this game.  Live and learn, but there's a reason why people around the league feel sick for Bills fans... it's not often a team loses a game, of this magnitude, due to a complete coaching meltdown.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Every team with a HC vacancy is praying we’re dumb enough to fire McD. Heck, there are probably teams that would consider firing their HC if they could get him.

We have a good thing going. It sucks that we lost but we’re going to be contending every year.

I did see a MN fan online say that the soft prevent D was his m.o.  I don't know enough about his time there.  But man, when you see how far off we were from the receivers - it's like we were trying to prevent a TD instead of a FG.

And McD does deserve the heat.  But he'll learn from it.  I'd rather he make these mistakes in a division round, and not the SB.

Don't be an apologist for McDermott.  The offensive play calling was lousy in the first half.  We could have and should have blown them out.  Instead we are running a dink and dunk offense.  We did not throw down the field once in the first half.  And Diggs 3 catches for 7 yards!!?? Get him running crossing patterns 15-20 yards deep.  NOT 2 yard outs.  That's ridiculous.  As good as Josh Allen was playing, as long as the O line was pass blocking decently, which they were, it should have been peddle to the metal the entire first half.  Instead we waited until we were down 23-14 to throw deep.  Combine that with the end of game meltdown on defense, and McDermott came up small.

That being said, he isn't going anywhere.  He has brought a winning culture to the franchise.  Just needs to be better in big playoff games.

Great points,  I also don't want Sean get fire despite that he was a huge reason why we lost this game.  I do believe it is time to replace Frazier, the Bills are usually at the bottom of the league in the most important defensive category and that is sacks.

You need pressure and sacks in this league,  the good teams pass the football and just playing bend but don't break is not going to win you a title.

There will forever be a contingent of Bills fans who want to support and retain Beane/McDermott basically FOREVER because they turned around an irrelevant franchise.

There is also a contingent (probably including mostly the same people) who will FOREVER be afraid of a coaching regime change because they fear the new guy will be Dick Jauron reincarnated.

Neither should be the basis for decision making moving forward.

Comparing ANYTHING to the drought era is ridiculous and shouldn't be done, and living in fear of change is not a good reason to avoid change, if it is needed.

McDermott is NOT out of lives NOW.  He still has X amount of time to get it done.  The exact value of X is unknown, though Pegula may have an idea.

If we don't get over the hump in X years, it will absolutely be time to discuss moving on from McDermott.

And I am a BIG Beane supporter, but the drafting needs to get a lot better.

You have to respect what McD has done in terms of changing the culture and he seems to be a good dude and fine motivator. But game management wise he is a bit of a liability.  He seems to fix mistakes but only after they happen.  Obviously can’t get rid of him but next year will be interesting. I don’t remember why Reid let him go in Philly but curious if anyone else does.

You don’t want to fire McDermott and find the next Gregg Williams?

The Bills finished 15th, 12th, and 11th in sacks the last three years. Hardly bottom of the league. They also finished near the top of the league each year in sack% (6th this year), hurry% (1st this year), and pressure% (1st this year).

The Bills put pressure on Mahomes a number of times throughout the game and the Chiefs got pressure on Allen a number of times throughout the game. Perhaps you didn't notice the amazing athleticism of each of them in getting away from it over and over.

The end of that game was an offensive exhibition you may never see again. Both Allen and Mahomes were literally unstoppable. In the end, the Bills played toe to toe with the Chiefs. The game ended in regulation tied at 36-36 with both teams being almost identical in yards and points per drive. The Bills lost the coin toss and lost the game. My guess is that they would have won the game had they won the coin toss. It doesn't mean the Bills couldn't have made some better plays, defensively at times, or that the coaches couldn't have made better decisions at times. It simply means this team was good enough as it was to beat KC. They didn't. They will continue to get better and try again next year.

BTW, KC is near the bottom of the league in both pressure and sacks - and have been during their run. It hasn't seemed to stop them from winning the AFC and a SuperBowl.

And before you say they have Mahomes, remember we have Allen.  And, IMO, ultimately, the Bills winning the AFC and a SB is going to have much more to do with Allen and the offense than the defense, much like KC's success goes through Mahomes and the offense.

The Bill's missed White lots vs the Chiefs. One of the things keep haunting me. If had White... He greats at shutting WR, granted might gave up yards but not in a big way. Would make Mahomes thinking even for a second longer.

I agree wrt "McD may never be elite",but he is at the very least very good....IMHO,Marv Levy, with all his accolades, was never "elite"

True, but everyone has injuries and must deal with them. I'm sure the Chiefs would say they would have performed much better against our offense if Matthieu hadn't left the game so early.

I think they did miss White. I don't know if he would have ultimately made a difference, but he could have. In the end I look at the game this way:

On Sunday night I saw a Chiefs team that played better than I have seen them play in a while and Mahomes was at the top of his game. In spite of that, Buffalo was absolutely right there with them all night long. There were 6 lead changes and neither team ever had more than a one score advantage. At the end of regulation the game was about as even as it could have been - right down to the score. The Chiefs won the toss in OT and won the game. But, I don't believe there was anyone that watched that game that believed Buffalo would not have won had they won the toss in OT.

I am as disappointed as anyone over the outcome; however, in spite of the mistakes, poor decisions, etc., if what you saw on the field, from an objective point of view,  does not give you a sense of optimism about the future, then I don't know what to say.

I do believe that most people will see it that way once the emotion of the loss and the way they lost subsides.

I'm pretty optimistic. With Pegula, Beane, McDermott, Allen and others. Really think highly of the team.
