Was this the worst upset loss in team history?

In terms of times when the Bills had a team with legit SB aspirations and were playing such a clearly inferior opponent............Jax is epically bad this season...........I'd say this one ranks up there with the mind boggling 10-5 loss to the woeful, creamsicle era Tampa Bay yuccaneers late in the 1988 season that cost the Bills home field and a likely SB berth.    That team was 11-2 coming into that game and the yuccs finished 5-11.

 

Definitely the worst one, IMO,  since the two inexcusable 1999 home losses by Flutie to the Raiders and Giants that ultimately lead to Buffalo playing on the road in Tennessee.   But those teams were at least mediocre 7-9/6-10 quality teams without those huge upsets in Buffalo.

 

That said.........still 9 games to play.........might mean they have to win on the road in the playoffs if they make it..........but still all in front of them like it was in those other two seasons.

Yep it’s up there but didn’t the 1991 team lose to a 1-16 Patriots team 14-7?  That was a major upset

I only remember the drought years, so we were never upset during that Era lol.

I seem to remember the hapless patriots beating us in the early 1990's.  They always played us tough especially in New England.

My 7-year-old self went to the game against New England at Rich Stadium in 1994.  

 

The headline in the Buffalo News the next day was “Coates Takes Bills to Cleaners”.

That was another bad one but that Pats team had 3 wins coming into that game and they finished 6-10.

Announcers already called it the upset of the season, at the very least.  It is certainly the worst loss of Allen's career, given we were favored by over 14 points.

This one is pretty bad.  We've lost a ton of games we should have won over the years but I dont remember any being this lopsided looking before the game

 

This team, as constituted, will probably slip into the playoffs, but I certainly wouldnt bet any american dollars on it.

Not only are the Jags bad, they were riddled with injuries, while the Bills were relatively healthy.

For whatever reason, the Bills’ Super Bowl teams always had trouble against the Pats, even though they stunk…even the games we won against NE were ugly.

The Jags came into the game 1-7.    Hadn't won a game in Jacksonville since the beginning of 2020.   That's definitely worse than any of the other scenarios mentioned. 

 

I do think the Jags will win 5-6 games.........which would put them in the same category with the 5-11 1988 Buccaneers.........a game that stunned the Bills fan base.  

 

And close games to divisional opponents shouldn't be nearly as surprising as against epically bad teams you don't play regularly.    I remember that game in NE well though.........it brought back memories of that Tampa game but they had a lead in the race for home field then too.    

 

This year,  they are chasing despite regularly being cited as "the best" team in the AFC.

I don’t know if it was the worst upset loss, but it clearly was the greatest team failure that the league’s scoring leader couldn’t even score a touchdown. Made worse by the total collapse of the OL, and Josh’s meltdown in the 2nd half.

 

I know that sometimes these games are a wake-up call. I really don’t know where you go after such an epic failure like this. My initial guess would be a rather painful losing streak. I hope that I’m wrong, but I’m afraid we have seen the best of the 2021 Bills and ought to start planning how this can be fixed for 2022.

 

All that can be said about today is that the entire team melted down.

Disappointing?  Sure.

 

But 1966 Chiefs were 11-2..........the 1966 Bills were 9-4..........the Bills had home field advantage but it wasn't really an upset,  the Chiefs were better that particular season.
