The rumors of Kim Jong Un’s “grave” illness, explained

Is the North Korean leader sick? Dead? Missing? Here’s what we know.

By Alex Ward@AlexWardVoxalex.ward@vox.com  Apr 23, 2020, 4:50pm EDT

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has become a visible global presence over the last few years. But in the last week, he’s completely disappeared from public view — and rumors have started to swirl that he may be seriously ill, or even dead.

On April 15, Kim didn’t appear at a celebration commemorating North Korea’s most important holiday, which honors the founder of the country, Kim’s late grandfather Kim Il Sung. State-run media oddly hasn’t published any photos of a recent weapons test, which typically show the leader watching in approval. And official statements from the country have curiously lacked any direct comments from Kim himself.

All of this has led to rampant media speculation that the 36-year-old Kim is recovering from major surgery, or gravely ill, or dead, and a flurry of activity by US intelligence to figure out what, if anything, is really going on.

Meanwhile, North Korean media outlets have kept mum about the swirling rumors and continue to act as if life in the Hermit Kingdom is proceeding as usual. Even as they publish old (or undated) statements from Kim about the economy and other topics, the gist is that there’s nothing to see here and everything is fine.

That could be true. Kim has disappeared for weeks before, only to show up in public as if nothing had happened. The coronavirus has also impacted the country, and the dictator may be taking precautions to avoid infection. Plus, North Korea’s culture of secrecy means rumors can run rampant regardless of how farfetched they may be.

But Kim is known to be in poor health; he’s obese, he’s a cigarette smoker, and he’s believed to have severe gout.

So he's a vegetable? Will the religious right protest if he is taken off his life support?

Are you complaining about the only thing keeping you clinging to a semblance of life? You are barely living proof that all vegetables are not good for a person. You're like iceberg lettuce, no nutritional value but very shittable.

Yes....but picking a reference to the ‘religious right’ on this particular story is a bit odd. That’s the first place your mind went? Really? Were you tortured by a cult in your youth?

He's a sloth, raised in the woods by a family of wolves.

I’m an idiot? That’s another odd response. The leader of a foreign country is potentially dying and you take that as an opportunity to toss out an attack on people who have nothing at all to with the story....and I’m the idiot? OK...you want to offer any opinion on the Bills draft picks? That has about as much relevance to this topic. What do you think of Epenesa?

STAY TUNED: Numerous U.S. Media Outlets Reporting that Kim Jong Un is in ‘Vegetative’ State.

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Is he alive? Is he dead? For the moment, I’m calling him Schrodinger’s Dictator.

That news conflicts with reports from another great parody news account, DPRK News:

dprk_news_kim_jong_un_4-25-20.jpg

As Glenn said, he really is Schrodinger’s Dictator right now.

The news stories that were published yesterday featured these speculative details: Kim Jong Un in ‘vegetative state’, Japanese media claims; China medical experts dispatched to North Korea.

“Japanese magazine Shukan Gendai reported that Kim collapsed during a visit to a rural area in April. Kim reportedly required a stent procedure following the incident. Shukan Gendai subsequently detailed how the surgeon in charge of Kim’s operation was not used to dealing with obese patients and was too nervous during the operation, leading to delays that left Kim in a ‘vegetative state.’”

How nervous? “Other unconfirmed reports, attributed to senior party sources in Beijing, said an operation to insert a stent went wrong because the surgeon’s hands were shaking so badly,” the New York Post adds.

Shades of the scene in The Death of Stalin when they Politburo couldn’t find any competent doctors to revive Stalin – because Stalin had recently had all the good doctors rounded up and shot during his “Doctors’ Plot” purge.

I would. She's got that soulless evil look in her eyes that tells me she'd be fun. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't live much past the encounter, but what a way to die!

Some people just can't handle a little bit of pressure, like being forced to perform a dangerous medical procedure on a deified fat guy in a country full of starvation, under the threat of he and his entire family being painfully exterminated (or worse) if he ***** up. What a wimp.
