Why I believe Jordan Phillips wasn't retained

Recommended Posts

Yes Phillips is a talented player. At his size, with his athleticism he is a freak and he ended up in the right spot in Buffalo

And McDermott put him in the best spot to succeed because he's a great defensive coach

What Phillips wasn't great at was playing his 1-11. Which is the most important part of McDermott's defense

All 11 players doing their job to make the defense successful. While Phillips certainly bought into the culture and team he still liked to free-lance

He didn't like to take 2 gaps when asked and would rather shoot the game hurting our run defense at times. In a front 4 scheme where gap integrity is key, Phillips lacked that detail

Yes a talented player but McDermott will get that out of guys who play his way 100% of the time , not 75%

From my understanding, he was offered 8 mil and took 10 elsewhere.  We were willing to bring him back at our price, and were fine if he wanted more elsewhere.

I don’t think there was more to it than that

Well everybody has a price tag Virgil. If he played gap sound football and 1-11 like McDermott preached maybe he got offered 10

It's not like the Bills fought hard for him. They were cool with letting him go

Did you hear this from any source? Not trying to criticize but I been wondering what did happen there with JP? I liked his play last year but wasn’t sure he would repeat after getting his big payday!

IMO Beane more than replaced Phillips in FA anyway.

I don’t know this for a fact, but I can surmise from their offseason that they felt missed tackles were a problem in 2019.

Phillips missed 11 tackles last year; that’s an absurd amount for a guy that played 543 snaps. For comparison’s sake, everyone’s favorite whipping boy—Star Lotuleilei—missed 3 tackles in 482 snaps.

The guy that will most likely replace Jordan, Vernon Butler, missed only 2 tackles in 440 snaps in 2019.

I think what 716 said in response to you is correct.   Phillips wasn't worth $10 to the Bills, because he didn't commit himself fully to the program.

Different teams value different skills and styles differently.   If I recall correctly, Stevie Johnson had a receivers coach in Buffalo who insisted on Stevie running precise routes.   Stevie didn't like it and wasn't good at it.   The Bills changed coaches, the philosophy changed to "Stevie, you line up here and you figure out how to get from here to there at the time the ball is supposed to arrive.  We don't care how you get there."  Stevie thrived.

Well, those are two different approaches, and each approach works for a certain kind of player.   If McDermott's approach doesn't mesh well with Phillips' skills and attitude, then he's worth less to Beane than he's worth to another GM who has a coach who wants his tackle free lancing.

How many of the snaps did Star make it to the ball carrier?  Shouldn't you look at attempted tackles instead of snaps.

The statistic of interest there would be missed tackle percentage.

Jordan - 20.5%
Shaq - 17.9%
Star - 13.9%
Oliver - 6.5%
Butler - 5.9%

Jefferson - 16.1%

What is defined as a missed tackle? I ask because how many times did Phillips have first contact behind the line of scrimmage, not make the tackle but slow the play down and allow the second guy to make an easy tackle? 20% still seems high though

That stat also seems very impressive for ed oliver

From what I read, he didn’t do the best job playing the run.  Many of the times when the defense was gashed on the ground, Phillips was in the game

One of the trusted Bills twitter reporters posted about that being the case for Shaq and Jordan.

I think he's a close second to Trent Murphy.  At least give Murphy his due.

Interesting and insightful.  Thanks.  I wondered why they didn’t keep.

There were a couple times I thought “YAY! He got the sack! But what was he doing there?”

Either way, he gave us a good year and the guy knew that sacks get you paid the Big Bucks.

He wasn’t the greatest run defender .... probably that simple

This is what I had heard.  He was a fairly good pass rusher for a DT but given his pressure to sack rate, you can’t argue that his sack # was a bit of an outlier.  He was not the best run defender, so they figured they could get comparable or better production from a rotational DT for less than $10M
