Browns hiring Alex Van Pelt as OC

That’s surprising. Then again, Stefanski only has a year of play calling experience himself

That may be the answer to your comment that you couldn't find a connection between him and Stefanski.

Maybe everyone else he called said "Thanks but No Thanks, I'm good"

Alternatively, maybe they felt if he could work with Aaron Rodgers for 4 years, he can work with Baker

Their personalities do have some parallels

It's a good idea for a young HC to delegate responsibilities, but it's somewhat a surprise to bring in someone else so inexperienced.

I hope it works out for them.........ohnoIdon't, I lie!  I lie!

Odder still it doesn't appear AVP had a previous relationship with Stefanski.

Hmmmm......I looked hard, and I couldn't see one.

Perhaps they want a former career backup to mentor a future career backup.

good for Alex

but.  Cleveland?

What a challenge that could be

Making sure ‘little Baker Napoleon’s’ hat is on straight.  Think of the characterization of Napoleon from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons.  Good luck Alex!  ?

I think it is a good hire. Just feels like a fit personality wise on that staff and I think you need an OC who is going to be QB centric with Baker.

Still not convinced Stefanski will work out long term but I do think he has started to piece a decent staff together.

I suspect job one for AVP is going to be putting his foot up Baker’s arse.  It’ll be interesting to see how they work together.  Baker had a QB coach he loved his rookie year and he looked like the real deal.  Then in Year 2 he had one he clashed with and he fell to the bottom of the league.  There is a ton riding on this hire.  I don’t know much about AVP, but I did read where Aaron Rodgers was pissed off when the team didn’t retain him.  That speaks well for him.  On the other side, Baker knows he effed up last season and he may be ready for the hard coaching he’s going to get.  I hope these two click.

How do you assess this?

I mean, I don't know Stefanski or Van Pelt or people who know them - do you?

I can see us fans assessing someone's past experience or the type of offensive system they run and whether that's a "fit" for what's known about the QB's playing style

But how do we assess their personalities?

It's not like either of them are high profile and have been in front of the media all the time like Gase where yeah, you kind of start to get some feel about it

I thought Alex Van Pelt was a joke as an OC for the Bills.

Wasnt it his brilliant idea to do the hurry up with Trent Edwards, because after all it worked 20 years earlier for the Bills and Edwards was  "smart"  becuase he went to Standford and bill Walsh said nice things about him, so he could easily excute it.  Unfortunately we had a huge offesnive line, overpaid for Derrick Dockery and monstrous 366 lb Langston Walker that was too big to do a hurry up and we cut him.  Also during the season he was spotted at the Casino several times when other OCs are working 18 hour days and sleeping in their offices.

By the way, Alex sure could get to the gym and lay off the bread. looks like the pillsbury dough boy about to pop.

Well that was 11 years ago... and he kind of got thrown into the fire. He may have learned, grown, and developed as a coach since then

I have seen plenty of both in front of the media. Obviously that is only a snapshot but I can see the way that a Stefanski - Van Pelt dynamic at least on that superficial level works.
