It's too long, you hardly ever see the starters, and the second halves are generally filled with players you've never heard of before. Thursday night, the Bills will open their preseason against the Indianapolis Colts. One thing that can make preseason interesting is young quarterbacks. The Bills-Colts matchup will feature two young quarterbacks that each have a curiosity factor. The Colts will not be playing Andrew Luck, who is trying to recover from a calf injury in time for the regular season. Backup Jacoby Brissett, who's actually performed decently well in Luck's absence in the past, will likely play a good chunk of the first half. After that is when it could get interesting for those in attendance and watching on TV. Indianapolis has two other quarterbacks on it's roster. Philip Walker, an undrafted, third year pro who has spent most of his first two seasons on the Colts practice squad. The Colts also have Chad Kelly. Yes, the nephew of Jim Kelly,.The former Broncos and Ole Miss quarterback, who is battling to make an NFL roster. It'll be interesting to see what type of performance Kelly puts on the field, Thursday night. He'll always be a curiosity to Bills fans, just because of who his uncle is. It's also interesting to see if Kelly could put some pressure on Indy to make a tough decision at quarterback. Kelly battled his way to becoming the backup quarterback in Denver last season. He very well could have started games, if he hadn't been arrested on Halloween, and then released. The Broncos were not competing to make the playoffs and only veteran Case Keenum stood in Kelly's way between himself and the field. He blew that opportunity. Not crazy to wonder if he’d have a real chance of being the starter (or at least be in Lock’s shows) in Denver right now, if not for his own idiocy. Chad's training camp reports seem like a mixed bag but he has a history of showing much better in the games than in practice. I would bet he will run their offense well and look competent doing it. The Ole' Miss fans really took to his competitve fire as he lead them to wins over Bama, LSU and Auburn and a Sugar Bowl win. They do not do those things in one season very often. Tyree is a nice project but observing him over the last 3 years it seemed his competitive fire never burned too brightly. Kelly would give everything he had to make a play work and his teammates responded to his lead. Tyree should have run roughshod over the MAC but there were plenty of times where the Bulls needed a play or two and he couldn't deliver. Imo, Chad was way too slow to learn the difference between "never giving up" and "never backing down" and it has caused much damage to his reputation and career potential. It barely has a pulse and these 4 preseason games will determine whether or not the Colts or any other professional team will be willing to work with him. He is fun to watch when on the field and it would it make a great story if he found any measure of success. Either you believe redemption is possible or don't.
