I miss Kevin Sheppard, he has 3 tackles this year

Oh man...wow.

EDIT:  @HOUSE

...and I know you know this, HOUSE, but just to be clear to the others the "wow" is how unbelievably well this trade has worked out for us...even to this day.

Three tackles, man...who drafted Sheppard, anyways?!

Imagine if we add another DT or DE with a top 5 pick (I can't see value at any other position in the top 5, and I'd be fine with trading down, so this is only if we stay top 5).

Lawson has also been doing a great job opposite Hughes this season.   Great DE improvement.  D could be even better next year with Milano being a 3rd year, and Edmunds coming on.

I was gonna mention Shaq too.  He's getting better, Harry, Edmunds, Milano, Taron all getting better each week it seems.   Nine rooks/2nd year guys starting vs Jags

Hughes is under contract for 2019, so I wouldn't worry about him not being here next season.

They might give him an extra year.

Yeah, Royale, it was really weird due to not only what I heard from fans here, but what was said earlier in the fall on the radio made it seem like it was a contract year for Jerry.

I went over to spotrac this morning and was surprised to see he has another year left on his deal.

I wouldn't be opposed to it. Dude has earned it. In 2020 he will be 32 which is an age where edge rushers can still be productive (Typically pass rushers fall off the cliff at 32-33) a one year extension which might bump him up slightly in 2019 and give him some guaranteed money (I would say guarantee 40-50% of his salary that year and give him a 10-15% raise in 2019) in 2020 would work for both parties. But he is at least going to be under contract for 2019.

He's been all over the place this season.  The pass rush has been solid when Murphy was on the field, and decent even without him.

I think the team still needs to go out and get another premium pass rusher this offseason (along with a CB2), which would really set the stage for them to dominate.

I hope they don't. They need to focus on the offense, and if they were to spend on a defensive position I would hope it would be outside linebacker. Lorenzo Alexander is old and better suited as a pass rush specialist anyway.

Why can't they do both?

I think LorAx should be back for sure; he's been solid when called upon at both levels of the defense. Keep him as a 3rd LB and pass rusher, AND upgrade the LB3 spot--those guys can easily be had on day 3 of the draft.

With $90M in cap space and 10 draft picks, there's no reason to limit offseason acquisitions to one side of the ball.

It's even more incredible he's doing all of that during THIS season.

Many players would've checked out mentally by now, as putting in that much energy & effort down after down in what you know will be a losing effort would grow tiresome really fast.

But Hughes is still committed to the team & the franchise, and it shows a lot of character with what he's doing. He could've pulled a Mario Williams with Rex Ryan, and I wouldn't have blamed him, but he hasn't. Hats off to him!

This. If you're going to spend money to improve the defense, which they should, the priority needs to be pass rusher. First guys you target on defense is pass rushers. It's really the only way to mitigate opposing offenses. Next you pay corners. I think we're pretty well set there and I think McD can find one with a later round pick. Pass rushers are absolutely essential. With Hughes and Lorax on the wrong side of thirty and Murphy consistently on the wrong side of the injury report, any defensive money or picks would be best invested in edge rushers. Don't really care if it's an OLB or a DE.

Thought the the same about Bruce.   All good DEs are held.

He needs to talk to Bruce.

He used to wear the tightest jersey possible and maybe even other things with shoulder pads or lube... or something.

Jerrys a solid Bill at this point. Love seeing him make tackles 15 yards downfield chasing RBs across the field... he works

I know the best DL keep their jerseys really, really tight, so OL cant hold them.

But is it legal to put vaseline on the jerseys?  It should be.

Ref:  Hey you have vaseline on your jersey.  Why?

Hughes:  I aint planning on throwing no spitballs.  Just trying to keep those fat boys from grabbing on to me.

Ref:  Unsportsmanlike, # 55.

Hughes is also winning his battle because Star and Kyle are doing an external job in the middle.  They are demanding double teams just like Hughes...and when Hughes goes 1-on-1 against average tackles, he always win them

Additionally, he is in our cap next year.

We don't have to spend FA dollars just to keep or replace him for one more season.

That would be novel, not dumping a player and having to burn a draft pick or  FA signing to replace him.
