Augie
As a Bills fan, I think I look forward to the start of college basketball almost as much as Christmas. By this time I’m usually looking for any kind of a win. Xavier plays their first game tonight against Ewy-Pooey. It feel SO GOOD to go into a game feeling like “we’ve got this”. It may be a rough season for our guys with huge turnover, including a new coach, but it still feels better than the Bills season! I know there’s a Syracuse thread, but I love all of college basketball! (The NBA? Not so much...as my son said after we plunked down about $400 on tix a few years ago “they’re not even TRYING!”) I get up to Cincinnati almost every year for a home game and make the trip if they play anywhere close. The last several years I’ve gone to at least the first round of the NCAA tournament in March. The Bills are my first love....but they make it so stinking hard! Who’s your team? . The Bills are my first love....but they make it so hard! Who’s your team? Kirby encourages you to follow Canisius. He is very familiar with the program and the players. The league they play in is a guard oriented league. Their coach, Witherspoon, a former coach of UB has done a good job in recruiting and making the team one of the better teams in the league. Although I don't live in the area I root for the home teams including UB, Niagara and Bona. Would love to see them get a local tournament going at Key Bank Center. Following the Bills has been exhausting and depleting. I'm now more enthusiastic about the Sabres than the Bills. I'm sorry to say that but my level of interest still exist but is waning with this football team. In addition, the standard in interaction when discussing the Bills has declined. Like Alabama football, you have to play them at their place, and it’s almost impossible to get even a home and home. I don’t think of Xavier as a mid-major anymore, but they can’t get a blue blood to “stoop” to traveling to Cincinnati on a home and home. At the same time, we ignore Dayton for a variety of reasons, so I get it. Top teams usually square off in “required” conference play. The ACC is tough, and there’s just no way around that. We won the Big East regular season last year, but two games against ‘Nova is always rough! The tournament in Hawaii this year will have a really good field of teams, so I guess that’s one good way to test your team.

LabattBlue
When is the “one and done” rule going to be tossed to the curb? In the first game of the year, I turn on Duke v Kentucky game and within 5 minutes there was a graphic about how numerous freshman players in the game will be top 10 picks. It ruins the game of college basketball for me. Just let these kids go pro right from high school and leave the spots on college teams open for guys who want to be there for 3 or 4 years. I remember when Duke was a program where no one had ever left early for the NBA. What a joke it continues to be.

Has good size 6’6 and good basketball IQ Jimmy B wouldn’t Let him come just because his name As for Sam Rautins, he is a little bit shorter than his older brother Andy, who is one of the best 3 point shooters in Syracuse history but he also has a sturdier frame he will probably be a dead eye shooter with sneaky good defense
Mr Info
Duke Dubs. The Warriors & Blue Devils will both be able to coast to the playoffs and tourney respectively. Mark Vader
It's the same in Basketball for me as it is in Football. Michigan. After last year's unexpected run to the National Title game, the Wolverines are with a lot of younger players this season, only 1 senior & 3 juniors. They have a good amount of sophomores with experience. They are still good enough to be ranked in the Top 25, but no proven big guys to take over from the departed Moritz Wagner. There is talent with players like Jordan Poole, Charles Matthews, Zavier Simpson & Isaiah Livers. Early games against Villanova & North Carolina will be tough, but if there is one thing I've learned is to never count out a John Beilein coached team. Especially when it gets late in the season. 1

You were spot on when you described a Beilein coached team as a team that gets better as the season advances. That's his trademark. His program is not built on one on one stars. His teams are noted for its unselfish style of play where passing and tough defense. The longer a player sticks with the program the better they are going to get. The German kid, Wagner, started off as a scrawny kid who wasn't much of a factor to becoming a versatile big man who was drafted in the NBA. It's not surprising that big time programs sometimes get tainted in pursuit of some of the four star players. Those are not the type of players he usually pursues because they don't fit the team work model that he advocates for. John Beilein is a great coach and a credit to his profession. It's understandable why he is admired by his coaching peers. John Beilein has started at the bottom in his peripatetic profession and worked his way up the coaching ranks. Everywhere he has gone he has been successful without a sniff of controversy. And that is easy in such a cut throat business. Beilein doesn't merely coach a team but he builds a program.

Everything you say is true. Last year's team is a great example. Early in the year they lose to Louisiana State, then blew an 18 point lead over Ohio State and lost, but then they beat UCLA, got swept by Purdue but beat the Boilermakers in the Big 10 Championship game and beat Michigan State 3 TIMES. This past weekend they beat Holy Cross, but not in a very dominant fashion, and they have a Wednesday meeting against Villanova. A game they will more likely lose. As you said, we shall see how Michigan finishes the season. John Beilein has gotten the Wolverines to the National Title game twice, and I think that he will win a National Championship eventually with this school. Maybe not this year, but you never know. Of course it was the best thing for his game. Going back to school for another year will always help your game unless your are a LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony type you can get bigger , stronger, refine your game. It’s a win win if you are a hard working player A guy like Wagner wasn’t ready for the league after his first couple seasons. The natural talent was there but he needed to craft his body to an NBA level and refine some things A great coach will bring that out of you

Trust me, Beilein would love to land those 5* recruits consistently. He can’t. It’s not a choice. Very few coaches/teams can pull that off. I have always admired John as a coach, however, as his teams always seem to be very tough...mentally and physically.
