Flake is nothing like Perot. The outsider is already the president. Those dynamics just aren't there.

Agree he's nothing like Perot but all it would take to derail Trump would be a republican of sorts running as an independent to siphon off a few percentage points of votes.  Don't rule out the Dems getting a shill in there.  Politically it would be very smart of them to help fund a 3rd candidate.

Maybe but Dems likely see Trump as a weak incumbent with very high negatives which might motivate some like Beto to run in 2020 that would otherwise wait.  He got a lot of exposure this last cycle against Cruz.  Will likely be a huge Dem field in 2020 and again in 2024 if Trump manages to win.

Flake (or someone else) on the other hand who hates Trump might run as an independent and Ross Perot-bomb Trump.

He's an abject moron and should never run.

It's gonna be Beto and it's not gonna be a competition.

The unwritten rules regarding experience have gone by the wayside. As far as skeletons in the closet, see the previous statement.

Beto is the one Dem with the political chops to make Trump look small. Booker and Warren don't have the temperament for that fight. Kamala Harris is not particularly likable. Joe Biden and Sanders are just too old.

Beto has that Obama charisma.

I think it's much more likely to be Kasich. That guy loves the sound of his own voice. I think Flake is content to retire. Doesn't seem like the ambitious type.

I didn't know he was even considering running...

Deval Patrick bows out of 2020 presidential run

He was being promoted in New England as a successor to Barack Obama for the first six years of the Obama Presidency.

It was regional, but major as far asDemocratic strongholds go.

Who, Beto "Hit and Run"? "DUI Beto? So far, every candidate on the left can be legitimately mocked. Mocking will drown a candidacy quicker than anything. Remember Dukakis in a tank? Flake is Jeb Bush 11 and will get crushed in a primary. Kasich can't be trusted after his abandonment of the "pledge".

Trump will (should) make his candidacy about strength and promises kept. He will be hard to beat.

The problem with that theory is the Never-Trumpers from 2016 broke for Hiliary because she was the Devil You Know

Fast forward to 2020.  The Democrats primary battle will likely feature a lurch to the Left.  The Democrat nominee will be saying crazy things for attention and Trump will be the Devil You Know

Nov 2020 election will be all about the economy .

It depends upon who you listen to. According to Obama, the economy sucks, but according to Obama he was the cause for this great economy. Which side of his mouth do you want to listen to?

There will be no RNC debates in 2020. That kills any chance of a challenger to Trump as they will not get enough press/airtime for people to know who they are. With the Weekly Standard going belly-up, the #NeverTrump "stronghold" in the Republican Party is gone. It is President Donald J. Trump's to win or lose for  the GOP in 2020.

As far as the Democrats...

This came out a few days ago. Camille Paglia gives a fairly accurate opinion  of the Democratic "field"(except the Obama/Joe Biden thing):

You've been a sharp political prognosticator over the years. So can I start by asking for a prediction. What will happen in 2020 in America? Will Hillary Clinton run again?

If the economy continues strong, Trump will be reelected. The Democrats (my party) have been in chaos since the 2016 election and have no coherent message except Trump hatred. Despite the vast pack of potential candidates, no one yet seems to have the edge. I had high hopes for Kamala Harris, but she missed a huge opportunity to play a moderating, statesmanlike role and has already imprinted an image of herself as a ruthless inquisitor that will make it hard for her to pull voters across party lines.

Screechy Elizabeth Warren has never had a snowball’s chance in hell to appeal beyond upper-middle-class professionals of her glossy stripe. Kirsten Gillibrand is a wobbly mediocrity. Cory Booker has all the gravitas of a cork. Andrew Cuomo is a yapping puppy with a long, muddy bullyboy tail. Both Bernie Sanders (for whom I voted in the 2016 primaries) and Joe Biden (who would have won the election had Obama not cut him off at the knees) are way too old and creaky.

To win in the nation's broad midsection, the Democratic nominee will need to project steadiness, substance, and warmth. I've been looking at Congresswoman Cheri Bustos of Illinois and Governor Steve Bullock of Montana. As for Hillary, she's pretty much damaged goods, but her perpetual, sniping, pity-me tour shows no signs of abating. She still has a rabidly loyal following, but it's hard to imagine her winning the nomination again, with her iron grip on the Democratic National Committee now gone. Still, it's in her best interest to keep the speculation fires burning. Given how thoroughly she has already sabotaged the rising candidates by hogging the media spotlight, I suspect she wants Trump to win again. I don't see our stumbling, hacking, shop-worn Evita yielding the spotlight willingly to any younger gal.

Will it hurt her?

Kamala Harris aide resigns after harassment, retaliation settlement surfaces

A longtime top staff member of U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris resigned Wednesday after The Sacramento Bee inquired about a $400,000 harassment and retaliation settlement resulting from his time working for Harris at the California Department of Justice.

Larry Wallace, who served as the director of the Division of Law Enforcement under then-Attorney General Harris, was accused by his former executive assistant in December 2016 of “gender harassment” and other demeaning behavior, including frequently asking her to crawl under his desk to change the paper in his printer.

The lawsuit was filed on Dec. 30, 2016, when Harris was still attorney general but preparing to be sworn in as California’s newly elected Democratic senator. It was settled less than five months later, in May 2017, by Xavier Becerra, who was appointed to replace her as attorney general.

By that time, Wallace had transitioned to work for Harris as a senior advisor in her Sacramento office.

Not at all. She's from the party of "Do as we say, not as we do."

^^^^Romney.

Romeny would be the perfect guy to do this.  Too bad he just won a Senate seat.

Would be nice for some real Republican to run as 3rd party that would take votes away from Trump.  After Romney I'm not sure who.  Maybe Paul Ryan?
